Opinion: Why is ‘60 Minutes’ amplifying the views of Marjorie Taylor Greene? | CNN

CBS' decision to feature Marjorie Taylor Greene on its long-running show 60 Minutes has been widely criticized as a misstep in the network's effort to provide balanced coverage of politics.

Critics argue that Greene's extremist views and history of promoting conspiracy theories make her an unsuitable guest for the program. Last year, she spoke at a white nationalist event organized by Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes, which was widely condemned by Republican leaders. Her Twitter account has also been suspended over hate speech and conspiracy claims.

The segment featuring Greene on 60 Minutes aired without any criticism of her views or actions. Instead, host Lesley Stahl seemed to gloss over Greene's more extreme comments, including her support for the idea that Democrats are a "party of pedophiles" and her defense of the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

The decision to feature Greene is particularly problematic given CBS' own history of controversy, including its past coverage of Donald Trump. In 2016, then-CBS CEO Les Moonves admitted that Trump's candidacy was "damn good for CBS," suggesting a prioritization of profits over journalistic integrity.

Critics argue that the segment was an opportunity for CBS to showcase Greene's extremist views and provide context on her history of promoting conspiracy theories. However, instead of doing so, the network appears to have given Greene a platform without any critical examination of her actions or views.

The decision to feature Greene on 60 Minutes has been likened to a " Witch Hunt" by some critics, who argue that it is an attempt to normalize and legitimize extremist views. The segment's lack of criticism for Greene's views has also raised concerns about the network's commitment to journalistic integrity and its ability to hold politicians accountable.

In contrast, many other outlets have criticized Greene's views and actions, including former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger and journalist Molly Jong-Fast. David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland school shooting, has called for Greene's appearance on 60 Minutes, saying that she needs to be questioned about her support for conspiracy theories.

Ultimately, the decision to feature Greene on 60 Minutes is a misstep by the network, one that prioritizes profits over journalistic integrity and normalization of extremist views.

I mean, come on... featuring Marjorie Taylor Greene on 60 Minutes was like inviting a ticking time bomb onto the show 🤯. I get that CBS wants to provide balanced coverage, but when you've got someone with such extreme views, it's hard to spin that as balanced, right? 🤔 It's not about being conservative or liberal, it's about basic human decency and respecting facts. Greene's Twitter account was suspended for a reason, folks! 😬 And the fact that Lesley Stahl glossed over her more incendiary comments is just plain concerning. It feels like CBS wanted to give Greene a platform without actually holding her accountable for her actions 🤷‍♂️. News outlets should be calling out extremism and promoting critical thinking, not normalizing it with a comfy couch interview 😒.

I'm so disappointed in CBS' recent decision to have Marjorie Taylor Greene on 60 Minutes 😕. I mean, come on, Greene's got some seriously extreme views 🤯, and it just doesn't seem like they even bothered to fact-check her claims or call her out on them 🚫. I'm all for balanced coverage of politics, but that doesn't mean giving a platform to someone who's spreading hate and conspiracy theories 💔.

It's also weird that they glossed over some of the more serious stuff she's said in the past 👀, like those crazy comments about Democrats being pedophiles 🤪. I get it, we're all about free speech, but that doesn't mean we have to enable hate speech or conspiracy theories 💣.

For a network that's been accused of having its own issues with controversy and profits over journalism 💸, this just seems like a step backwards 🚫. I think they missed an opportunity to actually examine Greene's views and actions, instead of just giving her a platform without any criticism 🔍.

I'm so glad some other outlets are calling out Greene's views for what they are 😤, and I'm with David Hogg on this one – she needs to be held accountable for spreading conspiracy theories 💪. This whole thing just feels like a witch hunt, but in a bad way 🧙‍♀️.

🤕 u no how cbs just featured marjorie taylor greene on 60 minutes? like, what's next? giving a platform to qanon or something 🤦‍♂️. they glossed over all her crazy comments about democrats and the jan 6th attack...like, where's the fact-checking? 📊👀. i'm low-key impressed by how quickly ppl are freaking out about this tho 😬. cbs shoulda known better than to give Greene a free pass...i mean, have they looked at their own history with trump? 🤔 that's like comparing apples and oranges...one's a total disaster, the other's just a bad look 👎.

OMG, what a total fail 🤦‍♀️! I mean, come on CBS! You gotta be kidding me! Marjorie Taylor Greene? Really? 🙄 She's like, totally toxic and has been spreading some serious hate speech 🔥. And you're just gonna feature her on 60 Minutes without even questioning her views or actions? 😒 That's not journalism, that's just plain weird 👀.

And don't even get me started on the whole "balanced coverage" thing 🤷‍♀️. If I want to see balanced coverage, I need to see some serious criticism of Greene's extremist views and actions. But nope, you guys just glossed over it all like it was no big deal 😴.

I mean, what's next? Are you gonna feature Alex Jones or InfoWars on your show too? 🤯 That would be a total disaster 💥! And honestly, I don't even know why they'd do that. They must be trying to make some kind of profit off Greene's hate speech or something 🤑.

I'm so done with CBS right now 😒. They're more worried about ratings than journalistic integrity. It's like, you can't put a price on truth and fairness 🤷‍♂️!

🤔 I'm so frustrated with CBS' decision to have Marjorie Taylor Greene on 60 Minutes... like, what were they thinking? 🙄 They know she's got some major red flags, right? Her views are just super far out there and conspiracy theories are not cool. The fact that they didn't even call her out for it is crazy. It feels like they just wanted to get a scoop and didn't care about the impact on their reputation. 🤦‍♀️ I'm all for balanced coverage, but come on! This was just a bad idea from start to finish. And honestly, I don't think it's going to help CBS' image at all... 😒

Ugh, I'm so confused 🤯... can't believe CBS decided to feature Marjorie Taylor Greene on 60 Minutes without even questioning her crazy views 💁‍♀️. I mean, have you seen her tweets? 😱 They're like something out of a conspiracy theory novel! And don't even get me started on that white nationalist event she attended 🤢.

I'm all for balanced coverage and providing different perspectives, but this is just plain irresponsible 🙅‍♂️. Greene's views are not mainstream, and it's not fair to give her a platform without even trying to criticize them 💯. I mean, wouldn't it be better if they had someone on the show who could really challenge her conspiracy claims and extremist views? 😤

And let's not forget CBS' own history of controversy 📰... it just doesn't make sense to me why they'd want to capitalize on Greene's infamy 💸. It's like they're trying to give her a free pass to spew her toxic ideology without being held accountable 🚫.

I'm all for free speech and debate, but this is just not okay 😕... we need more critical thinking and nuanced analysis in journalism, not just a platform for extremists to spread their hate 💔.

I don't get it why CBS would risk their reputation like this 🤔. They should've just said no way to featuring her, especially with all the hate speech and conspiracy stuff on record 🙄. I mean, what's next? Giving a platform to Alex Jones or one of those other loony tune conspiracy theorists? It's just not worth it, you know?

And don't even get me started on Lesley Stahl's handling of the segment 😒. She should've called her out on some of that crazy stuff she said about Democrats 🙄. I'm all for a good debate, but when it comes to extremist views, you gotta take 'em head-on.

I think CBS is just trying to be too nice and end up being too accommodating instead 😳. They need to remember what's at stake here - their reputation and credibility as a news org 📰. I hope they figure that out soon before it's too late 💔.

"Absence of criticism makes the loudest critics." 🙃 This segment on 60 Minutes has sparked controversy for featuring Marjorie Taylor Greene, with many criticizing it as an opportunity to normalize her extremist views. The network's lack of critical examination raises concerns about journalistic integrity and its commitment to accountability. It's puzzling why CBS would give Greene a platform without scrutinizing her comments and actions.

I dont think its right for CBS to feature Marjorie Taylor Greene on 60 minutes especially since she has been involved in some pretty extreme stuff 🤬. Like, come on, she's said some super hate-filled things about Democrats and the Holocaust is no joke at all! 🙅‍♂️ I mean, isnt there a responsibility for the network to fact-check her views or at least have someone on the show calling out her BS? The whole thing just seems like they're trying to give her a platform without questioning her extremist ideas... its kinda weird to me.

man this is so messed up 🤯 cbs is trying to make money off marjorie taylor greene's toxic ideology and it's not right they glossed over her crazy stuff on 60 minutes like that 🙅‍♂️ and i'm still confused why they didn't fact check her claims or even mention the white nationalist event she attended with nick fuentes lol cbs has a history of doing shady stuff too, remember les moonves saying trump's candidacy was "damn good for CBS" ? like, come on guys get some journalistic integrity 💔

I just saw this video of a cat playing the piano 🐈😹 it's so hilarious I was watching a documentary about climate change earlier and I was thinking about how cats are actually pretty good at finding ways to make humans feel better, you know? like they're always happy to curl up in your lap or something. anyway, back to this 60 Minutes segment... I don't think CBS did anything wrong by having Greene on the show, it's just that their host Lesley Stahl could've been more critical of her views. kinda like how my neighbor's dog is super good at sniffing out squirrels but can be a bit of a handful sometimes 🐶😂
