Partygoers are pushing for clubs to offer free water: 'It costs as much as a beer'

New York City nightlife venues often charge exorbitant prices for bottled water, leaving patrons parched and vulnerable to heatstroke and dehydration. Some venues may charge up to $12 per bottle of water, while others sell it for as much as a beer. This lack of access to affordable hydration is not only inhumane but also poses serious health risks.

The issue has sparked a growing movement among partygoers, with many calling for regulations requiring venues to provide free water stations. The push for reform gained momentum after an EMT, Brian Hackel, shared his experiences treating heatstroke cases at local festivals and events. He emphasized that free water can make all the difference between a minor issue and a life-threatening emergency.

In other parts of the country, similar regulations have been implemented to ensure patrons' safety. For instance, venues in Minnesota are required to provide free water for ticketed events with more than 100 attendees. In San Francisco, any venue with a dancefloor must offer "free, cool drinking water." The city's liquor licensing rules now require establishments selling alcohol to provide free tap water.

The UK has also taken steps to ensure patrons' safety, with the law requiring licensed premises to offer free, cold tap water to customers. This regulation was fought for by harm reduction advocates, who argue that taking care of patrons is a good investment and can boost business. "In my experience, doing the right thing is profitable," said Richard Hartnell, an organizer for DanceSafe.

The push for change has gained momentum after high-profile incidents, such as the 2018 concert where Billie Eilish handed out water to a Swedish crowd. The incident highlighted the importance of prioritizing patrons' safety and well-being. Advocates argue that venues should have multiple water stations clearly illuminated, with clear signage indicating their locations.

As New York City considers regulations requiring free water at nightlife venues, advocates hope for specific rules that will prevent venues from exploiting loopholes. "Not only should there be stations, but those should be clearly illuminated," said Peter Kerre, a community activist and DJ. "If there's an emergency, you want to know where the water is." The push for reform continues, with harm reduction advocates and partygoers alike demanding that nightlife venues prioritize patrons' safety above profits.

man, can u believe some ppl in nyc are makin us pay like $12 for a bottle of water at raves? it's straight up irresponsible 🀯. i mean, we all know the heat is gonna be crazy and dehydration is no joke. and what's even more messed up is that they're exploitin' this by sellin water for like a beer price lol... it's just so sad. but on the other hand, i gotta give props to ppl like Brian Hackel who's actually out there helpin others - his story's a big part of why we need change πŸ™Œ. i'm hyped that some cities are already doin this right and makin sure patrons have access to water... it's a step in the right direction πŸ’§, now let's get nyc on board!

I don’t usually comment but I feel like NYC is being pretty sketchy about this whole bottled water thing πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Charging people $12+ per bottle just to stay hydrated is insane, especially when you think about how hot it gets in the city during the summer months. I mean, who can afford that kinda price? It's not like they're buying a drink or something... water should be basic, right? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

I mean come on, $12 a bottle of water? That's just ridiculous. It's like they're trying to take advantage of people who are already drunk or just wanna party hard. I remember going to some festivals last year and you could literally buy a whole meal for what they were charging for a bottle of water. It's not cool, it's not right. And yeah, heatstroke is no joke, especially in the summer. If you're out there dancing all night, the last thing you need is to be stuck without water. I'm all for free water stations, like what they got in San Francisco. It's a simple thing that can make a huge difference. And it's not just about safety, it's about treating people with respect too. Venues should be more than just places where you go to get wasted.

I'm so fed up with those super expensive bottled waters at clubs in NYC 🀯. I mean, it's just basic human decency to have free water stations available, you know? It's not like it's gonna break the bank for venues to provide a few bottles of H2O. And can you believe some places are charging more for water than a beer?! 😲 That's just ridiculous. In the UK and other countries, they already got this down pat – licensed premises have to offer free tap water. Let's get NYC on board too πŸŒ†!

I'm freaking out about this NYC thing 🀯... how can places charge $12+ for a bottle of water? It's insane! I was at this festival last summer and had to wait in line for ages just to get a drink, and when I finally got one, it was like 10 bucks. And now you're telling me some places are charging that much more? It's outrageous! πŸ€‘

And what really gets me is the heatstroke cases, dude... people can die from dehydration if they don't have access to water. That's just not right. I've been to some of these NYC clubs and it's like they're trying to sell you a drink, not a life or death situation πŸ˜‚.

The UK has got this whole thing down pat, though. They make licensed premises provide free tap water... how simple is that?! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ And in San Francisco, they have dancefloors that serve cold water for free? That's just basic human decency πŸ’§.

I'm all for change here. We need to prioritize people's safety over profits. It's not like it's gonna break the bank for these places... but it's about doing the right thing, you know? 🀝

I'm like totally fed up with these clubs and bars in NYC charging insane prices for bottled water 🀯 It's not just about being greedy, it's a matter of basic human rights, you know? I've been to some of these festivals and events where people were literally dying from heatstroke because they couldn't afford a bottle of water πŸ’¦. It's just not right.

I'm glad some people are speaking out against this nonsense, like that EMT Brian Hackel who shared his experiences treating heatstroke cases 🀝. And it's cool to see other places like Minnesota and San Francisco taking steps to make sure patrons have access to free water. The UK's got a similar rule in place too, which is awesome πŸ‘.

The thing is, this isn't just about providing water for people who are struggling, it's also about making sure venues prioritize their customers' safety above profits πŸ’Έ. Like, if there's an emergency and someone needs water, they should know where to find it right away 🚨. The push for change is definitely gaining momentum, and I'm all for it πŸ”₯. We need more places like this in NYC, stat!

Venues can't just be like "You want water? That'll be $12 please"

$12 for a bottle of water? That's hotter than a thousand selfies

Water should be free, not just for your health but for the sake of the party

OMG, this is wild 🀯! Like, I've been to these clubs in NYC where they charge like $10 for a bottle of water and you're literally dying from thirst πŸ’€... it's so not cool, fam πŸ˜’. But seriously, it's crazy that people have to deal with heatstroke and dehydration because they can't get a drink πŸ€•. I mean, I've been to festivals where the EMTs are like "what are we gonna do?" πŸš‘... this is a no-brainer, right? Free water stations at every club would literally save lives πŸ’¦. And I love that some places in the US already have this law, like San Francisco and Minnesota... it's time for NYC to step up its game πŸ’ͺ! We need to make sure these clubs can't exploit loopholes and keep patrons safe 🚫. This is all about prioritizing people over profits, you feel? πŸ‘

🀯 I'm literally shocked by these prices - $12 a bottle?! That's insane! It's like they're trying to rip off people who are already having a good time 🍻. And what's up with the lack of regulation? It's not just about the money, it's about basic human rights and safety πŸ’§. I mean, can you imagine if someone was injured or worse at one of these events because they couldn't get water fast enough? No thanks πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. The fact that some places in the US have already implemented free water stations is a good start, but NYC needs to step up their game ASAP! πŸ’ͺ We need clear rules and visible signs so people know where to find help when they need it most πŸ˜…. This is all about prioritizing people's well-being over profits - let's get with the times, NYC! πŸŽ‰

omg u guys can u even believe ppl in nyc are gettin water 4 like $12 a bottle lol its so outta control!! i went to this festival last yr and it was super hot, but they didnt have free water stations anywhere 🀯🌑️ i ended up buyin water from a vendor outside and had to pay even more πŸ’Έ for it. it's literally a matter of life or death ppl if u get heatstroke its not good. i'm all for the ppl fighting 4 change tho, we should def have free water stations everywhere πŸš¨πŸ’§ especially in places with super long lines or crowded areas like festivals and concerts. and can u imagine if ppl got heatstroke at a show and died cuz they didnt have access to water? 🀯 no way that's not gonna happen on my watch lol

OMG I'm so surprised it took them this long to crack down on these ridiculous prices 🀯! I mean like who charges $12 a bottle of water?! It's just basic human decency, you know? I've been to these festivals and events where you're paying for a ticket and then they're like "oh sorry, that'll be an extra 5 bucks for a bottle of water" like what even is that πŸ€‘. And the worst part is some people actually can't afford it and get heatstroke or something from dehydration... it's just awful 😷. Anyway I hope NYC gets some sense soon and makes these venues provide free water, it's not like it's gonna break the bank or anything πŸ’Έ.

Ugh, can't believe some ppl in NYC r makin a profit off people's dehydration 🀯. It's crazy how they can charge up to $12 per bottle of water when it's literally life-saving πŸ’§. I mean, who needs that kind of stress while just tryna have a good time? The fact that other cities like San Francisco and Minnesota are already doing this makes me wonder why NYC hasn't taken the leap yet πŸ€”. And what's up with these venues thinking they can exploit loopholes? It's all about prioritizing profits over people's safety πŸ’Έ. I'm glad ppl r speaking out about it and demanding change. Venues should be making free water stations a standard thing, especially during hot events 🌑️. It's not that hard to provide a basic human right like access to hydration πŸ™. Let's hope NYC takes the hint and passes some real regulations soon πŸ‘

I'm so frustrated when I go clubbing in NYC and they're charging me like $12 for a bottle of water! 🀯 It's just not right, you know? People are risking heatstroke and dehydration because they can't afford to buy water, it's crazy! I've been to some festivals where the heat was so bad that people were literally passing out from the heat, it was terrifying. We need some regulation here, like they do in other cities, where venues have to provide free water stations with clear signage so everyone knows where to find them. It's not too much to ask for, especially when you're already paying good money to get into the club. 🚨

Wow 🀯! Charging 12 bucks for bottled water at parties is insane!!! I mean, come on, who thought that was a good idea? Free water stations would literally be lifesavers, especially during festivals and events. We need to make sure our safety is prioritized over the bottom line. It's about time some regulations came in place 🚨!

OMG u guys can't believe these NYC nightclubs charging up to $12 for a bottle of water?! 🀯 Like seriously who does that?! They're basically asking ppl to dry out & risk heatstroke. I was at this one festival last yr & saw ppl dehydrated, passing out...it was crazy! We need change ASAP!!! πŸ’§πŸ”₯ And it's not just about the $$$, it's about ppl's lives. We should be prioritizing hydration stations over profits 4 sure! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh, this is just great 🀯. They're raking it in on bottled water and people are literally dying of heatstroke because they can't afford to buy a bottle. It's insane. I mean, what's next? Charging them by the breath? πŸ˜‚ Seriously though, how can we trust these venues not to exploit loopholes if there's no regulation? And don't even get me started on the fact that some of these places are selling water for more than a beer. Like, what kind of sick joke is that? πŸ’Έ It's time someone steps in and makes sure patrons aren't just partying for their lives. I'm all for free water stations with clear signage - it's about time we put people over profits. 🀝

omg u guys i just cant even rn like how can ppl charge $12 for bottled water lol its insane especially when ur already paying $$$ to get into a club or festival nyc needs to step up their game ASAP πŸ€―πŸ‘ we gotta make sure all nightlife venues have free water stations that are clear and visible so ppl dont end up dehydrated and heatstroked it's literally life threatening stuff πŸ’¦πŸ˜΄ i'm loving the movement tho with people speaking out and advocating for change esp after those high-profile incidents like billie eilish handing out water to her crowd 🀝🌊

I'm not sure if I agree that venues should have to provide free water... I mean, I do think it's crazy that some places charge like 12 bucks for a bottle of water 🀯... but at the same time, I've heard those heatstroke cases are super bad and you can die from dehydration or whatever... so maybe having free water wouldn't be such a bad idea? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Like, I'm all for making sure people are safe and stuff, but also, I don't want to be forced to drink tap water every time I go out... that sounds gross 😝. Can't we just find a middle ground or something? πŸ’‘
