People with obesity 70% more likely to be hospitalised by or die from infection, study finds

Study Reveals Alarming Link Between Obesity and Infection Risks

A staggering 70% increase in hospitalization rates and mortality from infections has been discovered among individuals with obesity. Researchers analyzed data from over half a million people to determine the connection between excess weight and severe illness outcomes, including flu, pneumonia, and COVID-19.

The study found that nearly one in ten infection-related deaths worldwide can be attributed to obesity, contributing to an estimated 600,000 additional fatalities annually. Experts warn that as global obesity rates continue to rise, so will the number of deaths and hospitalizations linked to infections caused by obesity.

"We need policies that help people stay healthy and support weight loss," said Dr. Solja Nyberg, lead author of the study. "This includes access to affordable healthy food and opportunities for physical activity." Furthermore, it is crucial for individuals with obesity to stay up-to-date on vaccinations, especially during pandemic periods when they are more vulnerable.

The research used data from two studies in Finland and a large UK cohort to examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and severe infectious diseases. Over an average of 13-14 years, participants were followed, revealing a significant link between obesity and increased hospitalization or death rates from any infectious disease.

Obesity was found to increase the risk of infection-related hospitalization by 70%, with mortality rates varying across countries. The UK recorded the highest proportion, at one in six deaths linked to obesity, while Vietnam had the lowest, at just 1.2%.

While the study's findings are concerning, experts caution against overestimating the impact. As noted, limitations include the use of observational data and inability to confirm causality.

The alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions to combat obesity-related risks from infections. By addressing these issues, policymakers can help reduce mortality rates and promote healthier populations worldwide.

omg, this is soooo worrying 🀯! 600k extra deaths a year due to weight & infections? that's insane! we need to talk about healthy food options & regular exercise in schools, pls πŸ₯—πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ! and vaccinations are super important for those with obesity during pandemic times 🀧! the UK is like, one in six deaths from obesity-related issues... what's happening over there?! πŸ€”

🀯 this is crazy 70% increase in hospitalization rate is insane what's going on with our food system that we're seeing such rapid growth in obesity rates πŸ”πŸ₯€ gotta be something fishy about the way we're eating and living these days

and yeah doc solja nyberg makes total sense access to healthy food and exercise opportunities should be a priority for everyone especially those struggling with weight loss πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈπŸ’ͺ but it's not just that we also need to educate ourselves on vaccinations esp during pandemic times when we're more vulnerable πŸ’‰πŸ€’

anyway, can't stress this enough policymakers gotta step up and create policies that support public health we can't keep ignoring the rise in obesity-related risks from infections πŸš¨πŸ’‘

omg 70% increase in hospitalization rates & mortality from infections due to obesity is like super concerning πŸ€•! I had no idea that excess weight could make you so much more vulnerable to getting sick... like, what's the deal with that? πŸ€” is it because people with obesity have a harder time fighting off infections or something?

and 600k additional fatalities annually from infection-related deaths due to obesity is just mind-blowing πŸ’₯ i wish we had better policies in place to help people stay healthy and lose weight... access to affordable healthy food & physical activity opportunities would be like, so helpful πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ

I also want to know more about the vaccinations thing - how can people with obesity protect themselves from getting sick? πŸ€” should they get vaccinated more often or get special treatment or something? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ˜” you know what really got me thinking about this study... its not just about the numbers or the science behind it... its about how we've become so disconnected from our own bodies 🀯 like we're literally ignoring our internal warning signs - that something's off, and we're just going through life in autopilot mode πŸš—. we need to acknowledge that obesity isnt just a personal failing, but rather a symptom of deeper societal issues... like lack of access to healthy food options πŸ”πŸ‘€ or the absence of meaningful physical activity opportunities πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ. if we want to tackle this issue head-on, we gotta start by taking care of ourselves, and not just our external health metrics πŸ’Š

OBESITY IS SUCH A BIG DEAL RIGHT NOW!!! 🀯 I MEAN, WE KNOW IT'S NOT EXACTLY THE MOST GLAMOROUS TOPIC, BUT SERIOUSLY, 600,000 ADDITIONAL FATALITIES ANNUALLY FROM INFECTIONS CAUSED BY OBESITY? THAT'S JUST, LIKE, CRAZY TALK! 🚨

AND YOU KNOW WHAT'S EVEN CRAZIER? HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO TAKE ACTION TO CHANGE THEIR LIFESTYLE AND GET HEALTHY!!! πŸ€” I MEAN, WE NEED MORE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HEALTHY FOOD AND SPORTS FACILITIES, FOR REAL!

AND CAN WE PLEASE JUST REMEMBER THAT VACCINATIONS ARE KEY ESPECIALLY DURING PANDEMIC PERIODS?! 🧊😷 WE CAN'T KEEP WAITING AROUND FOR PEOPLE WITH OBESITY TO GET SERIOUSLY SICK!

OMG, this is crazy!! 🀯 I was worried about my family members who always say they're too busy to exercise but now I'm like "Uh, no, you gotta prioritize your health" πŸ˜‚. So sad that obesity is linked to so many infections - what's the deal with all these extra pounds? πŸ€” Does anyone know how to get started on this whole healthy living thing? πŸ’ͺ🌱 Need some tips, anyone? πŸ‘‡ 3rdworldprobs.com/2025-obesity-statistics

omg this is crazy! 70% increase in hospitalization rates for people with obesity 🀯 I mean we've been warned about this before, like back in the Obama era when they said we gotta get healthy and start exercising πŸ˜… but it's not until now that the stats are actually out there. I'm so glad Dr. Solja Nyberg is saying we need policies to support weight loss, like access to healthy food and more gyms πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ. And vaccinations, man, don't forget about those! We gotta stay on top of our shots, especially during pandemics πŸ€•. I'm not surprised the UK had the highest proportion tho, they're always talkin' about gettin' healthy and fit πŸ˜‰. Anyway, this study is like, super important, we need to do somethin' about this obesity thing ASAP πŸ’ͺ

I'm totally shocked by these stats 🀯! I mean, who knew that being overweight could increase your risk of dying from something as common as the flu? It's crazy to think about how much of a difference having healthy habits like regular exercise and eating right can make πŸ˜…. And what's even crazier is that in some places, like Vietnam, obesity-related deaths are super low πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. But we gotta take action, I guess πŸ’ͺ. We need better access to healthy food options and more opportunities for people to get moving πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ. It's all about balance, right?
