Man's swallowed Fabergé pendant finally recovered after six-day ordeal, police confirm.
Police have announced that they've managed to recover a prized James Bond-inspired Fabergé pendant that was swallowed by a man accused of stealing it from an Auckland store six days ago. The limited-edition pendant, valued at $19,000, exited the suspect's gastrointestinal tract naturally without any medical intervention, allowing authorities to retrieve it.
The 32-year-old suspect, whose name has not been made public, had swallowed the pendant on November 28 during the alleged theft at Partridge Jewelers in Auckland. He was subsequently arrested and appeared in court on November 29, where he failed to enter a plea to a charge of theft. Since then, police have been monitoring him closely around the clock.
"We had a duty of care to continue monitoring this man given the circumstances of what has occurred," said Inspector Grae Anderson in a statement.
The recovered pendant is one of only 50 Fabergé eggs made, crafted from gold and encrusted with 183 diamonds and two sapphires. It features an 18ct yellow gold octopus inside, adorned with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes.
The man is set to appear in Auckland District Court on Monday, where he will remain in police custody until then.
