Twitter's Parent Company Gives Users Until November 10 to Re-Enroll Security Keys or Face Account Lockout
Users of Twitter's parent company X who rely on hardware security keys for two-factor authentication (2FA) have until November 10 to re-enroll their keys. According to a notification spotted by The Verge, the Elon Musk-owned company is phasing out its use of the twitter.com domain and hardware keys like YubiKeys, which will stop working unless users re-enroll them.
The X Safety account recently notified users of the impending deadline in a post, stating that "By November 10, we're asking all accounts that use a security key as their two-factor authentication (2FA) method to re-enroll their key to continue accessing X." Users can either re-enroll their existing security key or enroll a new one. However, if users choose to enroll a new security key, they will need to also re-enroll any other security keys currently in use.
X has clarified that this change only affects YubiKeys and passkeys, not 2FA authenticator apps like Microsoft Authenticator or Authy. Users who fail to re-enroll their affected keys by November 10 will have their accounts locked until they complete the re-enrollment process, switch to a different 2FA method, or opt out of 2FA altogether.
To re-enroll your hardware key or add a new one, users can follow these steps: Head to Settings in the X app, then click "Security and account access" and "Manage Passkeys" within the Security section.
