Rep. Velázquez says it's time for generational change in NY, but demurs on Schumer

As New York's longest-serving Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez prepares to pass the torch to a new generation, she's signaling that it's time for change in the city's congressional delegation. With her own 30-year tenure coming to an end in 2024, Velázquez is nudging other longtime officials to make room for newcomers.

The Democrat has watched as gentrification transformed the neighborhoods she represents, pushing out long-time immigrant enclaves and ushering in a new wave of residents. Yet, she remains optimistic that her protégés – like Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and State Senator Julia Salazar – are ready to take the reins.

"We've done our job," Velázquez said. "Now it's time for the next generation of leaders." She declined to comment on the future of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who would be 78 at the start of another term. The New York native has been a steadfast advocate for Puerto Rican causes and has mentored many young politicians.

However, not everyone shares Velázquez's enthusiasm for change. Governor Kathy Hochul, a fellow Democrat, remains unconvinced that a generational refresh is necessary. Born in 1951, Hochul said she sees no reason to replace Schumer, citing the party's tradition of embracing diverse viewpoints and ages.

Velázquez, on the other hand, wants her successor to be attuned to the pulse of the district, with a sense of urgency and a willingness to tackle tough issues. "We need someone who will step up, fight for what's right, and come up with new ideas that can meet this moment," she emphasized.

As Velázquez prepares to pass the torch, her legacy as a champion of progressive values is secure. With the retirement of fellow New York Representative Jerry Nadler, Velázquez has set the stage for a changing of the guard in the city's congressional delegation – and the hope that a new generation will carry on her work.

can't wait to see who gets the torch 🤔, hopefully it won't be just a fancy way of saying "too old and out of touch" lol 💁‍♀️ anyway, 30 years is a looong time in politics, gotta wonder what's gonna change now that these veterans are stepping down 🙃

I gotta correct you, not everyone shares Velázquez's enthusiasm for change... and actually, Governor Hochul's point about tradition being important is valid 🤔. I mean, Schumer has been around for ages (78 next term!) and knows the system inside out. It's not just about bringing in new faces, but also making sure they're equipped to handle the big issues. Velázquez is right that change is necessary, but it's gotta be done thoughtfully. We don't wanna just swap one old guard for another... unless Schumer's successor can bring some fresh energy to the table 🔄

😊 you know i feel bad for nydia velazquez, she's been doin this job for like forever! 30 years is a looong time 💯 it's amazing what she's accomplished, but i can see why she thinks it's time for some new blood 🔄 especially with all the changes in her district - gentrification is such a tough issue to deal with 😕 my heart goes out to all the people who've been affected by it. anyway, i think it's awesome that there are some fresh faces on the horizon 🌟 antonio reynoso and julia salazar seem like great choices... they're already makin moves and takin names 💪 let's see how it all plays out! 😐

man I'm kinda sad to see nydia velazquez go but i get it she's been doing this job for 30 yrs that's some serious dedication 🙌 meanwhile i'm curious to see who'll be her protégé - has anyone seen antonio reynoso in action yet? and yeah gentrification is a real pain in the city ...

omg, it's time 4 change 🔄💥! i think nydia velazquez is doin a great job, but even she knows its time 2 pass the torch 🕰️. i love how antonio reynoso & julia salazar are ready 2 take over, dey seem like a fresh face w/ new ideas 💡. governor hochul tho... idk man 🤔. dey say we need diverse viewpoints & ages but sometimes u just gotta make room 4 new blood 💀. i mean, its not about age, its about being in tune w/ the ppl 🗣️. let's hope whoever takes over nydia's seat can keep her legacy alive 🔥💕

I gotta say, it's kinda bittersweet when an iconic leader like Nydia Velázquez is stepping down 🤔. On one hand, you wanna see a fresh face take over and bring some new energy to the table 💥. But at the same time, you can't help but feel a little nostalgic for the impact Velázquez has had on her district over the years ❤️. I mean, she's been a true champion of progressive values and Puerto Rican causes for decades 🌟. And it's awesome that she's setting the stage for a new generation to carry on her work 💪. But, gotta wonder, what if some folks in the party are hesitant to let go of Schumer? 🤔 Guess only time will tell how this all plays out 😊

I'm low-key excited to see some fresh faces in the NYC congressional delegation 🤔🌆! Nydia Velázquez is doing an amazing job, but I think it's time for a change 💪. We need leaders who are passionate about fighting for social justice and pushing boundaries 🚀. Antonio Reynoso and Julia Salazar seem like they're up to the task 👏. And let's be real, Chuck Schumer is getting up there in years 😂. Still, I love Kathy Hochul's take on not replacing Schumer just because he's old - age shouldn't matter when it comes to leadership 💕! We need people who are willing to listen, learn, and lead by example 📚💪. Bring on the new generation! 👋

I'm kinda worried about this change in leadership 😬. I mean, we've seen how gentrification is affecting our neighborhoods 🤕, and I think Nydia Velázquez has been a huge voice for us immigrants 💪. I know she's saying it's time for the next gen to take over 👥, but what if they don't understand the struggles of our community? We need someone who'll actually listen to us, you know? 🗣️ I'm not sure about Kathy Hochul saying we should just keep things as they are – that doesn't seem like a forward-thinking move to me 🤔. I hope whoever takes over Velázquez's seat will be able to bring in some fresh ideas and really tackle the tough issues 💡.

Its time to let go of old guards 😊. NY's been through so much gentrification wise, its time to bring some fresh blood into the Congressional mix. Nydia Velázquez is doing us all a favor by nudging other long-serving reps out the way 🙌. We need people who are attuned to the pulse of the district and not afraid to get their hands dirty 💪. The next gen leaders like Antonio Reynoso and Julia Salazar seem like they're ready for the challenge 💼. Let's hope Gov Hochul comes around too 🤞

I think its time for change in NYCs congress 😊. Longtime reps like Velazquez r udderly exhausted 🤯, and gentrification has changed the neighborhoods she rep so much 💥. I'm all 4 change, but not sure if a new gen leader is ready 2 take on Schumer yet 👴🏻👨‍💼

🤔 I think it's really interesting how Nydia Velázquez is trying to shake things up in Congress after 30 years, but at the same time, Governor Hochul is being pretty vocal about not wanting to make any changes. It makes me wonder what's going through their minds, you know? 🤷‍♀️ I mean, on one hand, you've got Velázquez saying that it's time for a new generation of leaders, but on the other hand, Hochul is all about tradition and embracing diversity, which is totally fair. But then again, Velázquez has this fire in her belly to push for progressive change, and I think we can all get behind that 💪. It's like, is it time for some new blood, or should they stick with what they know? 🤔

😏 I mean come on, Kathy Hochul thinks Schumer is still got it? 78 years old and still trying to be relevant? 😂 It's time for change, even if Velázquez doesn't want to admit it. The thing is, Schumer has been around for so long he's lost touch with the people he's supposed to represent. He's more concerned with being the Minority Leader than actually making a difference in his own district. And Hochul is just drinking the Kool-Aid, thinking that tradition means sticking with the same old faces, no matter how out of touch they are. 😒 The next gen leaders like Reynoso and Salazar are the ones who need to shake things up, not maintain the status quo. Time for a fresh face, new ideas, and some much-needed urgency! 💥
