Republican Darren Bailey to stay in Illinois governor race after family helicopter tragedy

Illinois Governor Race Remains Intact Despite Devastating Helicopter Crash Tragedy

Republican candidate Darren Bailey has announced that he will continue his bid for Illinois governor despite a devastating family tragedy. Just two weeks ago, the state legislator's son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren were killed in a helicopter crash in Montana.

Bailey, who lost to Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker by almost 13 percentage points in the 2022 general election, has cited his campaign as a source of strength and motivation in the face of grief. In a heart-wrenching video posted on social media, Bailey expressed his gratitude for the prayers and messages that have supported him during this difficult time.

"The last two weeks have been some of the hardest days of my life," Bailey said. "But we're hurting, but we're leaning on our faith, our family, and the prayers and support so many of you have shared. It truly means more than we can say."

Bailey's decision to stay in the race was reportedly influenced by a phone call from former President Donald Trump, who urged him to "keep fighting" and not back down.

With this tragedy weighing heavily on his mind, Bailey still sees an opportunity to effect change in the state. "Zach and Kelsey believed in an Illinois where families could build a future without being crushed by bad government and broken promises," he said. "So do we."

Bailey is among seven Republican candidates vying for the party's nomination this time around, including Wirepoints researcher Ted Dabrowski, DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick, and video gambling mogul Rick Heidner.

The Illinois governor primary is set to take place on March 17, 2026. However, several candidates are facing obstacles due to petition objections, which could potentially disqualify them from appearing on the ballot.

πŸ€• that's so tough for Darren Bailey and his family, but I gotta admit, his determination is pretty inspiring πŸ’ͺ. Staying in the race despite losing people he loves is not easy. It's a big risk, but if it means making a difference in Illinois... πŸ€”. Trump's call of "keep fighting" must mean a lot to him right now πŸ—£οΈ. Bailey's words about Zach and Kelsey believing in an Illinois where families can build a future without bad government is really resonating with me 😊. It's like, his heartbreak is fueling a fire for change πŸ”₯. Will it be enough to turn things around? Only time will tell ⏰.

Omg this is wild! 😲 The guy's family just got brutally murdered in a helicopter crash and he still wants to run for governor? Like, I get it that politicians have thick skin, but that's some next level stuff right there 🀯. At the same time, I kinda admire his grit – it takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there like that after going through something so traumatic πŸ’”.

I'm also curious to see how this whole thing affects his campaign. Will voters be more sympathetic to him because of what happened? Or will they think he's using it as an excuse to get sympathy votes? πŸ€” And what about his opponents – do they think he's crazy for running after all this? 🚁

It's also weird that Trump got involved and told him to "keep fighting". Like, isn't that just rubbing salt in the wound or something? πŸ˜‚ Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out. March 17, 2026 can't come soon enough 🀞!

πŸ€• That's a tough one... I feel bad for Darren Bailey and his family 🀞. Losing so many people in such a tragic way must be heart-wrenching πŸ˜”. But at the same time, I'm kinda surprised he's still running πŸš€. Like, isn't this gonna be too much to handle? 🀯 It's like, can you really be all about winning an election when your whole world is turned upside down? 🌎

I guess what bothers me is that politics should never have to take priority over people's lives πŸ’”... especially not in the face of such tragedy 😭. But maybe Bailey sees this as his chance to make a difference, like he said πŸ“’. Fingers crossed for him, though - I just hope he can stay on track and put his family first ❀️.

What do you guys think? Do you think Bailey's gotta be crazy to keep going with the campaign or should we support him because of what he says? πŸ€”

OMG u wont bliev what's goin on in IL! 🀯 so theres this rep candate Darren Bailey who just lost his fam in a helicopter crash 2 weeks ago & yet hes stil runnin for gov lol. he says itz all about gettin stronger thru prayer n support πŸ™ 4 me tho, id be like "bailey ur doin it fer ther kidz" but whatever... I guess itz all good cuz hes not losin tho πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I cant imagine how hard it must be for Darren Bailey to keep going with this campaign after such a tragedy 😩. His son and daughter-in-law were more than just family members, they were his everything πŸ€•. I think what's keeping him going is the memory of them and the vision he shared with them about creating a better Illinois for families like theirs πŸ‘ͺ. It's heartbreaking that some people would be thinking about the election over his personal loss πŸ’”. On one hand, it's admirable that he's finding strength in prayer, family, and community support πŸ™. But on the other hand, can't we just have a moment of silence for the victims instead of moving forward with the campaign? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Omg, I'm literally shaking thinking about Darren Bailey going through this πŸ˜±πŸ’”. Losing your loved ones in such a tragic way is just devastating, you feel? But at the same time, I gotta respect his strength πŸ’ͺ - he's choosing to keep fighting for what he believes in despite all this πŸ™Œ #StayStrongDarren #GovernorRacing #KeepFightingTheGoodFight πŸšπŸ’¨

Ugh I'm still trying to wrap my head around this πŸ˜”... It's truly heartbreaking that Darren Bailey is going through this unimaginable tragedy, losing not one but three members of his family in a helicopter crash 🚁😱. As someone who values compassion and empathy, it's hard to see him continue his gubernatorial campaign amidst such immense grief.

On the other hand, I do admire his resilience and determination πŸ’ͺ. It takes immense courage to keep going in the face of unimaginable loss, and Bailey's decision to stay in the race is a testament to that strength. His words about Zach and Kelsey's vision for Illinois resonated deeply with me 🀝.

It's interesting to see how this tragedy might impact his campaign, particularly with the upcoming governor primary just around the corner ⏰. With several candidates facing petition objections, it could get really messy. One thing is for sure: Bailey's personal story will be a major talking point in the coming months πŸ“°.

πŸ€• This whole thing just got me thinking - life's tough, but it's how we respond that matters πŸ’ͺ. I mean, imagine having your world turned upside down like this, and yet you still find a way to keep going 🌟. Bailey's story is really inspiring, and it's making me think about my own struggles in life. What can I do to make a difference when things get tough? How can I choose to see the opportunities for change instead of getting bogged down by negativity? πŸ’‘

πŸš‘πŸ˜’ Still can't believe this tragedy happened. Guess that's just how life goes sometimes... βœοΈπŸ’” Bailey's decision is kinda inspiring, but also super selfish πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
