Right-wing operatives sentenced in racist robocall scheme targeting Detroit voters - Detroit Metro Times

Two right-wing operatives dodged jail time on Monday after pleading no contest to charges related to a racist robocall campaign targeting Detroit voters. Jack Burkman, 59, and Jacob Wohl, 27, were sentenced to one year of probation for their role in creating and funding the series of robocalls that spread false information about voting by mail in 2020.

The calls, which were sent to nearly 12,000 numbers linked to Detroit addresses, falsely warned recipients that sharing personal information on mail-in ballots could lead to arrest or collection of unpaid credit card debts. The messages also claimed that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would use the information to track people for mandatory vaccines.

Burkman and Wohl pleaded no contest to charges including bribery, intimidation, conspiracy, and election law violations. They had been accused of using every "racist dog whistle" to suppress turnout among Black voters in Detroit.

Attorney General Dana Nessel condemned the scheme, saying it was an egregious example of targeted voter suppression. She warned that if Burkman and Wohl engage in criminal behavior while on probation, they would be held accountable.

The case had moved through years of appeals before being resolved under a Cobbs agreement between the defendants and the court. The agreement allowed the judge to estimate the sentence in advance, but the Michigan Attorney General's Office was not part of that agreement.

Burkman and Wohl still face consequences elsewhere. They previously agreed to pay up to $1.25 million for similar voter suppression robocalls in multiple states.

The incident highlights the ongoing struggles with voter suppression and misinformation in US elections. As one lawyer noted, "voter intimidation is a serious crime" that undermines the fundamental right to vote.

man... these guys are just the tip of the iceberg 🤯 they're trying to erode our democracy by spreading lies and fear... but you know what? it's not them, it's us who need to wake up 🚨 we gotta be more vigilant about sharing information and verifying sources... can't let people like these two guys control the narrative 📺 and manipulate others into feeling scared or excluded. we gotta look out for each other and make sure everyone has access to the truth 💡 and remember, the power is in our hands, not theirs 😊

I mean, what's up with these guys? They're like the ultimate losers 🤦‍♂️. Like, who tries to rob a call? 😂 Robocalls are literally the worst, and then you find out it was just two dudes trying to scam people... I'm surprised they didn't try to pass off their own poop as mail-in ballots 🤢.

But for real though, this is some messed up stuff. Using racist dog whistles to suppress votes? That's not cool, dude 😒. And now these guys are just gonna skate on a misdemeanor charge because of some loophole in the system? It's like, hello, justice?! 🤷‍♂️

I'm glad the AG is keeping it real and saying this was an egregious example of voter suppression. We need more people like her who aren't afraid to call out the bad guys 🙌. And can we talk about how these two clowns are gonna try to spin this? Like, "Oh, I was just trying to make a living" or whatever... nope, dude, you were playing dirty 💸.

Anyway, at least they're paying up for their sins... sort of. And it's not like they actually did anything wrong, but still, let's keep the momentum going to make sure our votes are safe and respected 🗳️!

🤦‍♂️ I'm literally so fed up with this 📞 robocall nonsense! These two guys, Burkman and Wohl, thought it was okay to spread false info about voting by mail in Detroit? 🤯 Like, what's next? They could've caused some serious harm, especially for the Black voters who were targeted. I mean, the messages they sent out were basically saying that sharing your personal info would lead to arrest or credit card debt collection... talk about voter intimidation tactics! 😬 And can you believe they thought they could get away with it and only face a year of probation? It's just not right. 🤷‍♂️

It's crazy how these guys are still facing consequences, even if it's just in other states, but at least the court is taking steps to hold them accountable. The Attorney General's office was right to condemn this scheme as an egregious example of targeted voter suppression. 💯 We need more people like her who are willing to speak out against voter intimidation and misinformation. 🗣️

🤔 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing... these two guys must've been outta their minds to think they could get away with spreading such hate-filled lies about voting in Detroit 📞. And yeah, it's just disgusting that they dodged jail time and are just getting a slap on the wrist instead of some serious consequences 🙄. The fact that they were using racist dog whistles to scare off Black voters is just despicable... how can people be so heartless? 😔

Ugh 🤕 this is so not surprising. These guys dodged jail time? 🙄 come on, they're basically just lucky. One year of probation for masterminding a racist robocall campaign that scared people half to death? That's laughable 😂. And what's with the whole "no contest" plea deal? Just giving them a slap on the wrist so they can get back to their next scheme. 💸 Meanwhile, innocent people who got targeted by these calls are still living with the trauma and uncertainty. It's infuriating 🤬 and it just goes to show that our justice system is totally broken ⚠️.

I mean, come on... 1 year of probation? It's just not enough. I'm all for rehabilitation and second chances, but this feels like a slap on the wrist. What about accountability? They're dodging real jail time and still face fines and restitution. And it's not like they were just some small-time crooks - they were part of a coordinated effort to suppress votes in Detroit. The whole thing reeks of racism, plain and simple. And what's with this "every dog whistle" nonsense? Are we seriously saying that's the extent of their wrongdoing? I need to see more sources on that one...

can't believe these two clowns got away with this 🤯. i mean i know plea deals happen all the time but 12k people targeted like that?? some ppl think money talks and it sounds like it did in this case 💸. wonder how many more voter suppression schemes are gonna fly under the radar because of rich white dudes getting off scot-free 🙄. need to keep pushing for more accountability from our AGs so we can make sure these kinds of tactics dont get repeated 🚫

omg I cant even believe this happened 🤯 I mean, like, what's wrong with these guys? creating fake robocalls just to mess with people's minds and stop them from voting? that's just, like, so not cool 😒 I feel bad for the people in Detroit who got targeted by this.

I'm also wondering, how does one even become a right-wing operative? like, is it something you can study or learn online? 🤔 I mean, I've heard of some crazy stuff going on in politics, but this takes the cake.

anyway, back to the news... what's with the fine of $1.25 million? can that even pay for all the damage they caused? 🤑 and what about the people who got targeted by these robocalls? did they get any help or support from the authorities?

I'm also a bit confused about this Cobbs agreement thingy... how does it work? is it like a special deal between the defendants and the court? 🤔
