Mamdani Slammed for Snowy Streets as Critics Turn Cold on Left-Wing Mayor.
New York City has been snowed under since two weeks ago when fierce Winter Storm Fern dumped over a foot of snow on the city. The streets remain congested with slush and ice, prompting criticism from right-wing tabloids like the New York Post.
The Post is blaming socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani for the messy streets, calling them "ruining travel for everyone" and accusing him of mismanaging his first snowstorm. Kelly Jane Torrance, editor-at-large at the Post, went on Sky News Australia to double down on the criticism, claiming that Mamdani has mishandled the situation.
But records show that January, Mamdani's first month in office, saw record low crime figures for New York, with the fewest murders, shootings, and shooting victims in the city's history. The snow-related criticism is an unusual move, especially since science dictates that temperatures above freezing are necessary to melt snow and ice.
Social media users have also jumped on the bandwagon, including actor Michael Rapaport who has frequently criticized Mamdani for his stance on issues like Islamophobia during his mayoral campaign. Rapaport recently posted a video of himself walking around New York City, calling the streets "filthy" and "a dirty snow-covered dump." His post didn't elicit much sympathy from users, with some even telling him to "get over it."
The criticism is also unusual given that other mayors have faced similar challenges when dealing with heavy snowfall. In 2014, Bill de Blasio was accused of neglecting the wealthy Upper East Side in favor of Brooklyn and Queens during a storm.
Mamdani has responded by attributing the issue to the cold front and promising that sanitation workers are working 12-hour shifts to clear streets. He emphasized that it will take time to get every single street clean, citing what New Yorkers deserve.
