Rep. Shri Thanedar Files Articles of Impeachment Against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth Over Alleged War Crimes.
Congressman from Michigan, Shri Thanedar, has filed articles of impeachment against US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, citing his alleged involvement in ordering the killing of civilians on a Venezuelan drug smuggling boat and discussing attacks on Yemen in a group chat. The move comes after Thanedar also previously filed seven articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump, alleging corruption, freedom of speech violations, obstruction of justice, and other high crimes.
Thanedar described Hegseth as "uniquely unqualified" to serve as Secretary of Defense, stating that his actions put American servicemembers and their families in danger. He also claimed that Hegseth's handling of classified information was improper, as he allegedly leaked sensitive war plans through a Signal chat, which could have compromised national security.
The congressman announced the articles of impeachment at a rally in Washington D.C., withThanedar saying, "In this country, we have presidents, not kings. This is not just misconduct. This is impeachable misconduct. This isn't leadership; it's tyranny." He emphasized that if such actions were allowed to stand, it would mean that the president was above the law.
However, Democratic Party leadership had discouraged Thanedar from pursuing impeachment proceedings in the past, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has stated that Republicans will never allow articles of impeachment to be brought to the floor of the House. Instead, Jeffries believes Hegseth should resign from his position as Secretary of Defense.
The move by Thanedar comes amidst a growing divide between Democrats and Republicans over Trump's impeachment. The previous attempt to impeach Trump was blocked by Senate Republicans, but this latest effort may face similar challenges.
