Singin' in the Rain review – a high-energy puddle-stomping production of unapologetic joy

A High-Energy Romp Through Tinseltown: Raz Shaw's Effervescent 'Singin' in the Rain'

As the curtain rises on Raz Shaw's exuberant production of Singin' in the Rain, a lone figure emerges - Don Lockwood, played by Louis Gaunt. In an instant, he transforms into his movie star persona, donning a coat and hat that set the tone for this sparkling musical. With its pre-Hollywood roots and penchant for poking fun at the gap between reputation and reality, Shaw's production is an apt start to what promises to be a high-energy romp through Tinseltown.

Gaunt shines as Don, whose self-importance is quickly mocked by aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Carly Mercedes Dyer). Meanwhile, Lina Lamont's on-screen glamour clashes with her screeching voice, delivered here with squeaky relish by Laura Baldwin. The arrival of the talkies leaves the studio scrambling to save face, and Shaw masterfully milks this scenario for comedic effect.

One of the standout features of Shaw's production is its ability to balance crowd-pleasing confidence with clever wit. When Don finally starts tap-dancing in the pre-interval downpour, Gaunt effortlessly teases the audience, threatening front-row spectators with a flick of his umbrella. This moment is characteristic of Shaw's approach, which plays to the strengths of the Royal Exchange's in-the-round space.

Here, the talented ensemble and Alistair David's high-energy choreography carry the action along, often with minimal set. The result is an immersive experience that draws the audience into the world of 1920s Hollywood. Whether as adoring movie fans or confidantes to a riled Lina, everyone is involved in this infectious celebration of joy.

In stark contrast to some of the Exchange's more recent offerings, Shaw's production is unapologetically joyful - a respite from doom-scrolling that feels both necessary and exhilarating. By the puddle-stomping finale, resistance is futile. As the curtain falls, you'll be humming the tunes and grinning from ear to ear, swept up in the sheer exuberance of Shaw's production.

i totally disagree with all this rave about Raz Shaw's Singin' in the Rain 🙄 it's just a bunch of old movie cliches strung together with some fancy choreo 🕺 and over-the-top acting from Louis Gaunt, honestly, he's kinda annoying 😒 i mean, who thought it was a good idea to make tap-dancing cool again? 🤦‍♂️ and the Royal Exchange's in-the-round space just adds to the cringeworthy experience 👀 plus, the whole thing feels like it's trying way too hard to be fun and lighthearted 😒 when really, it's just a bunch of overpriced nonsense 🤑

I'm thoroughly entertained by Raz Shaw's 'Singin' in the Rain', it's a cinematic delight that whisks me away to Tinseltown's golden era 🎬. The cast is phenomenal, Louis Gaunt shines as Don Lockwood and Carly Mercedes Dyer brings a delightful vulnerability to Kathy Selden 💫. Alistair David's choreography is electric, I love how the ensemble weaves in and out of the action with such energy 🌪️. What I think sets Shaw's production apart is its ability to balance humor and heart, it's infectious enthusiasm is just what I needed after a long day 😊. The pre-interval tap dance scene had me grinning from ear to ear, it's moments like those that remind me of the magic of cinema ✨.

omg I just saw this musical and it was LIFE.CHANGING!!! Louis Gaunt as Don Lockwood had me DYING on the spot, his energy is infectious 🤩! And Carly Mercedes Dyer as Kathy Selden? Perfection! The way they balance humor with heart is pure magic ✨. Alistair David's choreography had me tapping my feet and screaming for more 💃🏻👏. I love how it pokes fun at the Hollywood elite, but in a lighthearted way that feels so relatable 🤣. Can we please get this musical on Netflix?! 😭

🤩 I loved Raz Shaw's 'Singin' in the Rain' it's like a big ol' happy dance party on stage 🎉! Louis Gaunt is hilarious as Don Lockwood and Carly Mercedes Dyer is so sweet as Kathy Selden 💕. The whole cast is just fantastic, and Alistair David's choreo is top notch 👏. I was laughing out loud during that tap-dancing scene in the rain ☔️! Shaw really knows how to make you feel like part of the Hollywood glamour 🎬. It's not your typical musical, it's more like a party with friends 😊

oh man i just saw this musical 'singin in the rain' and it was SO much fun!! Raz shaw did an amazing job bringing the classic story to life with his talented cast, esp louis gaunt as don lockwood - he brought so much energy and charm to the role! 🤩 the music is catchy and the choreo is top-notch, i loved how they used the in-the-round space to get everyone involved. it's just what we need right now - a big dose of happiness and joy 💖

I'm so loving this musical adaptation of Singin' in the Rain! 🌂️ Raz Shaw's got a real knack for bringing the old-school Hollywood vibes to life, and Louis Gaunt is absolutely killing it as Don Lockwood. I mean, who doesn't love a good tap dance party in the rain? 😂 But what really impresses me is how Shaw balances humor with heart - it's not just a bunch of silly jokes, there's actual depth to the characters too.

And can we talk about the cast? Carly Mercedes Dyer shines as Kathy Selden, and Laura Baldwin's got some serious vocal skills (although I do feel for her character having to deal with that squeaky voice 😂). The whole ensemble is just so talented and charismatic - it makes you want to join in on all the fun! 💃

I also love how Shaw uses this musical to poke fun at the industry, but in a way that's not mean-spirited or mocking. It's more like a playful wink to the audience, saying "hey, we know this stuff can be ridiculous, but let's have some fun with it!" 🤣 And honestly, it totally works - I was grinning from ear to ear by the end of it.

Overall, Shaw's production is just pure joy - the perfect antidote to a long day of scrolling through socials or news. So if you ever get the chance to see this musical, do yourself a favor and go! 💖

I'm tellin' ya, this Singin' in the Rain production is more than just a musical - it's a cleverly crafted distraction from the real issue at hand 🤑. Think about it, guys. The movie star persona Don Lockwood? Sounds like a character created to showcase the power of Hollywood's influence on our perceptions. And have you seen Louis Gaunt's performance? He's got that "it" factor, but what if he's just a tool for the studios to control our emotions? 🤔 And don't even get me started on Lina Lamont's screeching voice - is it really just an act of comedic genius or a clever manipulation to make us think she's more than meets the eye? 🎭 The energy in this production might be infectious, but I'm convinced there's something fishy going on beneath the surface...

Omg I just watched this movie and I'm still grinning 😁 it's like Raz Shaw has bottled the essence of old Hollywood magic and poured it into his production 🍸 I love how Louis Gaunt as Don Lockwood just brings that certain charm to the role, and Carly Mercedes Dyer as Kathy Selden is a total scene-stealer 💁‍♀️ Lina Lamont's character is so over-the-top hilarious too, especially with Laura Baldwin's squeaky vocals 😂 Alistair David's choreography is insane, it totally sold me on the pre-interval downpour tap-dancing scene 🌂

I just watched Singin' in the Rain 🎥🌂 and I'm literally buzzing! Raz Shaw's production is EVERYTHING - the energy is electric 💃, Louis Gaunt as Don Lockwood has me dying (from laughter 😂), and that tap-dancing scene? Iconic 👯‍♀️. The way the ensemble comes together to create this infectious celebration of joy is just pure magic ✨. And can we talk about how much I need some of that optimism in my life right now? 🌞 It's been a while since I've seen a show like this - unapologetically joyful and carefree, it's like a breath of fresh air 👅. Don't miss out on Shaw's production, trust me! ⭐

🤩 I'm loving this new musical at the Royal Exchange - Raz Shaw's done an amazing job bringing Singin' in the Rain to life 🌂 The cast is absolutely on point, especially Louis Gaunt as Don Lockwood 👍 He's got that movie star swagger down pat and his tap dancing skills are seriously impressive 💃 Plus, Carly Mercedes Dyer shines as Kathy Selden, and Laura Baldwin's sassy take on Lina Lamont had me giggling 😂 The choreo is high-energy and infectious, and the set design is minimal but effective 🎭 I'm not a fan of some of the newer shows at the Exchange, but this one's definitely a breath of fresh air 💨

just watched singin' in the rain at the royal exchange 🌂🎬 and i'm still reelin' from the energy! raz shaw's done an amazing job bringin' this classic tale to life, and louis gaunt as don lockwood is pure perfection 🤩 he totally owns that stage, and the whole cast is on point. i love how shaw balances the laughs with heart, too - it's not just a bunch of jokes, but a real celebration of joy 🌈️ i was tap-tappin' my feet in the aisles, and by the end of it all, i was literally dancing in my seat 💃🕺. what more can you ask for from a night out? 😊

🌊💃 I love how Raz Shaw brought this classic to life with a modern twist! 🎬 The tap-dancing scene was absolute perfection 😂. But what really stood out for me was the cast - Louis Gaunt, Carly Mercedes Dyer and Laura Baldwin all shined in their roles 💫. And can we talk about Alistair David's choreography? It was like a party on stage 🎉. The way they used that in-the-round space to create an immersive experience was pure genius 🤩. I felt like I was right there in 1920s Hollywood, dancing and laughing along with the rest of them 💃🕺. This production is exactly what we need more of - joy, energy, and a healthy dose of silliness 😊

I'm low-key obsessed with this new production of Singin' in the Rain! Raz Shaw's done an amazing job bringing the classic to life 🎬💥 Louis Gaunt as Don Lockwood is literally perfection - I love how he brings that charisma and charm to the role 😍. And Carly Mercedes Dyer as Kathy Selden? 💁‍♀️ She's got some serious pipes on her, I was singing along by the second act! 👏 The choreo by Alistair David is insane too, it's like they're dancing right into your living room 🤩. But what really gets me is how Shaw balances that big-screen energy with this intimate, in-the-round setting - it's pure magic ✨ Can't wait to see more of his work!

I can totally feel how excited you must've been watching this musical 🤩! It sounds like Raz Shaw really knocked it outta the park with his production of Singin' in the Rain 🎉. I love that he was able to balance crowd-pleasing moments with clever wit - it's like he knew just when to poke fun at the situation without being too over-the-top 😂. And can we talk about Louis Gaunt's performance as Don Lockwood? He must've brought so much energy to that role! I'm not surprised you were fully immersed in the world of 1920s Hollywood - Shaw really knows how to create an experience 🎥. It's amazing how this show could bring people together like that, even in a post-pandemic world 🌈.

idk why people are gonna love this sappy musical tho 🤷‍♂️, it's just a bunch of over-the-top performances with some fancy tap dancing 🕺. and don't even get me started on the "romance" between Don and Kathy, it feels so forced 💔. plus, i'm pretty sure Louis Gaunt is just trying way too hard to be charming 😒. and what's up with the music? i mean, i love a good show tune as much as the next person, but some of these songs are straight out of a cheesy 90s musical 🎵. still, i guess it's better than that other production they did at the Royal Exchange last month... 😐
