Some fans whistle as Lionel Messi’s name is announced as Paris Saint-Germain’s season hits new low | CNN

Fans turn on Messi as PSG's season hits new low in embarrassing 1-0 loss to Lyon.

The struggles of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) continued unabated, with the team suffering its second straight home defeat. A solitary goal from Bradley Barcola 10 minutes into the second half was enough for Lyon to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the French giants.

For many PSG fans in attendance, however, the night took an even more bitter turn than expected. As Lionel Messi's name appeared on the big screen during the announcement of the starting lineup, some fans couldn't resist expressing their discontent with a chorus of whistling. The reaction seemed to be a world away from the adoration and fanfare that Messi typically receives upon his appearances.

The pressure on PSG is mounting as they sit six points behind leaders Lens and Marseille in the Ligue 1 table. With both teams just a single point behind, even the domestic title may now be slipping through their grasp.

PSG's recent form has been a far cry from the expectations surrounding Messi's return to the club. Despite his impressive goal contributions this season, with 34 in all competitions, including 18 goals and 17 assists, many are now questioning whether Messi is truly making a difference.

Coach Christophe Galtier refused to lay blame at Messi's feet, stating that he tries hard but also acknowledging that the other players need to step up their performance. "We can't expect everything from Leo and Kylian," Galtier said in a press conference.

The pressure will only intensify for PSG as they face off against an unbeaten Nice side next, before hosting Lens at home. The team's recent form has been alarming, with two consecutive defeats since their Champions League exit to Bayern Munich last month. Their latest win came via a late Kylian Mbappé winner over relegation-threatened Brest.

Lyon head coach Laurent Blanc echoed Galtier's sentiments on the impact of expectations surrounding PSG's performances. "Paris' problem is when the No. 1 objective of the Champions League is no longer accessible, it seems that the season no longer exists – and at all levels," he said in a post-match interview.

With Messi facing mounting criticism from fans, coaches, and pundits alike, there are growing concerns about whether the Argentine's presence can salvage PSG's flagging title hopes.

man... PSG is having such a rough patch rn 🤕 they're getting smashed by Lyon at home and it's like the whole team is just holding their breaths waiting for Messi to turn it around 💨 but honestly, 34 goals in all comps isn't exactly setting the world on fire this season 🤔 i mean don't get me wrong, he's still a genius on the field, but his stats aren't exactly lighting up the league table 🔥 and with Lens and Marseille breathing down their necks, it's getting to the point where everyone's just wondering if he's really making a difference 💭

Ugh I feel bad for PSG fans 🤕, they're getting destroyed by their own expectations 😩. Like, come on, Messi is doing his thing, scoring goals left and right ⚽️, but it's not enough? He can't single-handedly carry the team to wins 🙅‍♂️. The coaches are trying to set realistic expectations 🤔, but still... fans are whistling at their own idol? 🎶 It's just not cool 😒. Maybe they're just stressed about the title race ⏰ and their own performance is getting to them 💪. Can't blame Messi for everything 🙄. The team needs to step up, period 🔥!

It looks like the "Lion King" is finally showing some signs of wear and tear 💥! Messi's magic is starting to lose its luster, and it's not just about him – it's about the entire team's performance. The pressure on Christophe Galtier to deliver results is getting intense, and if he can't get PSG back on track, it might be a case of "who's next in line" 🔄.

The question remains: what's the value of having a superstar like Messi when the rest of the team isn't performing up to par? Is it too much to ask for the other players to step up their game and make PSG competitive again? 🔥 It seems like Galtier is trying to keep the faith, but if things don't start turning around soon, there might be a reckoning 💪.

omg like what is going on w psg?? they were so hyped for messi to come back but now it's like fans r turnin against him lol. i feel bad 4 him cuz he's still doin his thang & makin goals, but yeah, the team needs 2 step up their game ASAP 🤦‍♂️🏆 if they wanna catch up w lens & marseille

I mean, this is crazy stuff! 😱 They're saying that even with all these goals for Messi, PSG is still struggling? Like, what's going on there? 🤔 I feel bad for Messi, he's trying his best but it seems like the rest of the team needs to step up their game. And fans are being super harsh too... 10 whole minutes whistling at him? That's a lot of pressure! 💪

🤔 I feel bad for the fans who were expecting PSG to be on fire with Messi back, but you know what? It's like they're being given a wake-up call to appreciate their team more than just relying on one superstar 🙌. And let's not forget, 34 goals and 17 assists is still insane! 😲 The pressure on them must be tough, but maybe it'll push them to work together better as a squad? 💪 I mean, who knows, they might surprise us all with a comeback! 🔄

I'm surprised by how quickly things have turned sour for PSG since Messi returned 🤔. You'd think that having someone of his caliber on your team would bring a level of consistency and quality to your performances, but it seems like the pressure is getting to him and his teammates too 💔. Six points behind at this stage in the season is a big gap to make up, especially considering how inconsistent they've been lately 📉. I think Galtier's right that Messi can't do everything on his own, but it feels like he's being expected to carry the team to victories when they're not coming easily 💪. Time will tell if this is just a bad patch or if PSG are truly struggling with something deeper 🤞

im not surprised by this lol 😂 psg is clearly struggling to live up to expectations now that messi is back. like the guy has 34 goals in all competitions but somehow they're still only 6 points behind the leaders 🤯. i think its time for christophe galtier to re-evaluate his tactics or something, coz right now its just not clicking 🔀. and honestly, even with messi's contributions, the team is still lacking that spark 🔥. maybe it was too much to expect them to bounce back after that champions league exit 🤷‍♂️
