Sonder closes its Philly rental properties as it abruptly goes out of business

Sonder, the San Francisco-based short-term rental company, has abruptly shut down its Philadelphia properties and ceased operations after Marriott International terminated its licensing deal with the company. The move is a result of prolonged challenges in integrating their systems and booking arrangements, which have led to significant financial constraints.

The exact number of Sonder properties affected by this closure is unclear, but four apartments in Center City were still listed on TripAdvisor as of Monday, including The Arco, The Witherspoon Apartments Center City, The Queen Hotel Queen Village, and The Edison. Guests at one of these properties, The Witherspoon, were given just 24 hours' notice to vacate the premises.

The closure is a dramatic turn of events for Sonder, which had previously been seen as a competitor to Airbnb. In a statement, interim CEO Janice Spears acknowledged that the company's integration with Marriott International was "substantially delayed" due to unexpected technical challenges and integration costs, leading to a sharp decline in revenue.

Sonder plans to file for Chapter 7 liquidation of its US businesses, citing "profound financial constraints" as the reason for its collapse. Despite attempting to find alternative solutions, including a potential sale of the business, the company has been left with no choice but to shut down.

The impact of Sonder's closure is being felt across multiple cities worldwide, where the company had over 40 properties offering short-term rentals. Guests who had booked stays at these properties are now facing uncertainty and disruption, as they try to secure refunds or find alternative accommodation.

In a devastating admission, Spears stated that Sonder "made comprehensive efforts" to avoid liquidation, but ultimately was left with no viable options due to the company's integration challenges and declining revenue. The closure of Sonder's Philadelphia properties marks a significant blow to the city's short-term rental market, leaving many wondering what this means for the future of accommodation in the city.

I'm so bummed about Sonder shutting down their Philly spots πŸ€•. I had friends who were going to stay at one of those apartments and now they're freaking out trying to get refunds or find new places to stay. It's crazy how quickly things can go from being a cool option to not existing anymore πŸ™„. The tech stuff sounds like it was too complicated, but I don't get why it couldn't just be worked out with Marriott International? Now there are just a bunch of empty apartments and no one knows what's going on πŸ˜•.

lol @ Sonder thinking they can compete with Airbnb like that πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ! Marriott just pulled the plug on them and now their entire US business is getting shut down πŸ’ΈπŸ˜±. It's crazy how tech issues and financial struggles can bring down a whole company in one fell swoop πŸ’₯. I mean, I've had some bad experiences with short-term rentals before, but at least I knew what I was getting into πŸ˜‚. Sonder's closure is gonna mess with a lot of people's travel plans this year, gotta feel for the guests who are left scrambling for refunds or new places to stay πŸ€•.

πŸ€• just when you think you've got a good deal on a short-term rental, sonder goes and shuts it down on ya! four apartments still active on trip advisor tho πŸ€” idk how they're keeping them running like that... seems like a nightmare trying to integrate with marriott international πŸš€ anyway, hope the guests get their refunds sorted ASAP πŸ’Έ

Man 😱 just heard that Sonder shut down its Philly properties after Marriott International axed them 🚫. Those 4 apartments were still listed on TripAdvisor as if nothing happened 🀯. I mean, who gives 24 hours' notice to vacate? That's crazy! πŸšͺ It's like they just gave up on the whole thing πŸ’”. The CEO said it was due to financial constraints, but that's just a nice way of saying they messed up the integration with Marriott πŸ’». Now guests are stuck trying to get refunds or find new places to stay 😬. Not great for the city's short-term rental market πŸŒ†. I hope Sonder tries to make it work elsewhere, but Philly is gonna feel this one hard πŸ’”.

awww man, this is so sad!!! πŸ˜” sonder had such great apartments and it's always fun to stay there 🏨 they should have gotten it together with marriott international before now... like, hindsight is 20/20 right? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ i feel bad for all the guests who got screwed with the short notice 😩 anyone else gonna get affected by this or is philly safe now? 🀞

I'm shocked 😱 that Sonder went down without a fight πŸ₯Š! I mean, I knew they were struggling, but 24 hours' notice to vacate? That's just not cool πŸ˜’. And Marriott terminating their deal? That's some next-level corporate move πŸ’Ό. I feel bad for the guests who got screwed out of their bookings πŸ€•. It's like they say, "you can't have it both ways" - Sonder thought they could be all-in on short-term rentals and then get all cozy with Marriott too? Didn't work out πŸ‘Ž. This is gonna make waves in Philly's accommodation scene, for sure...

omg 😱 just heard about sonder shutting down their philly properties 🀯 it's like, they went from being all hip and trendy with airbnb 🌟 to suddenly being done πŸ’€ i mean, who expects this kinda thing to happen? especially when they were trying to integrate with marriott international πŸ€” those technical challenges and integration costs must've been a total game changer πŸ”₯ not to mention the financial constraints 😬 it's crazy how fast things can change in the business world πŸ’Έ what does this say about the future of short-term rentals? will other companies follow suit or will someone else come in to save the day 🀞

omg i just found out about sonder shutting down all their properties in philly 🀯 i was thinking of staying in one of those apartments last year and now they're all closed lol what happened to them? did they have like a huge financial crisis or something? πŸ˜‚ i feel bad for the guests who were already booked and got 24 hours notice to leave... that's so stressful! πŸ€•

πŸ€” I'm telling you, something fishy went down here... Marriott International terminating their licensing deal with Sonder seems like more than just a coincidence πŸ€‘. They must've seen an opportunity to swoop in and take control of the short-term rental market. What's really going on is that Sonder was getting too close to exposing some shady practices by Marriott. I mean, have you noticed how easy it is for them to shut down a company like Sonder? It's just too convenient πŸ™„. Mark my words, this is just the tip of the iceberg...

Ugh, I'm so bummed to hear about Sonder shutting down its Philly properties πŸ€•. I mean, who doesn't love exploring new neighborhoods and staying in unique apartments? The fact that Marriott International ended their licensing deal is pretty harsh, though - I guess you can't blame them for not wanting to stick around with a company having major integration issues πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Now it's gonna be super hard for guests who were already booked to get refunds or find new places to stay...it's just so inconvenient 😩. Guess we'll have to look elsewhere for alternative accommodations in Philly now.

omg i cant even believe sonder is shutting down all their philly properties 🀯 like how were supposed to get those rad arco and witherspoon apartments listed on tripadvisor now theyre just empty lol what does this mean for ppl who had booked stays there? πŸ€” i was always thinking sonder was gonna be a game changer in the short term rental scene but looks like marriott had other plans πŸ€‘ anyway, thats all i can think about for now...sonder shutdowns and stuff πŸ‘€

🀯 I feel bad for all those guests who are now stuck with no place to stay πŸ€•. It's crazy that Sonder couldn't make it work despite trying so hard πŸ™„. I mean, integrating systems and booking arrangements can be a real challenge, but 24 hours' notice is just too short πŸ•°οΈ. What's going on in the future of short-term rentals in Philly? Is this gonna affect Airbnb too? Shouldn't Marriott International have thought things through before cutting ties with Sonder πŸ˜’. This whole thing is so frustrating 🀯

πŸ€• sonder shutting down their philly places is super sad πŸ˜” i mean they had some really cool and unique rentals like The Arco πŸ™οΈ it was so instagrammable πŸ’˜ but it just goes to show how hard it can be for short-term rental companies to navigate the booking systems and all that jazz πŸ“Š

i feel bad for the guests who got just 24 hours notice to vacate their places 😱 that's super stressful and unpredictable. i hope they get some kind of refund or assistance from sonder πŸ’Έ and maybe marriott can help facilitate a smooth transition or something?

anyway, it's definitely going to have an impact on philly's short-term rental market πŸ“‰ and we'll just have to wait and see how the city reacts to this new development πŸ€”

Ugh, man... πŸ€• I just heard about Sonder shutting down its Philly spots and it's like, what happened? They were all about disrupting the short-term rental game like Airbnb, but apparently, integrating with Marriott was too much to handle 😩. I mean, I get it, tech challenges can be a real pain in the butt, but 40+ properties across multiple cities just goes to show how big this deal was 🀯.

And now these guests are stuck with what? No refunds, no alternative accommodations... 😱 It's like they got played by the company. And I'm not even gonna get into the financials here, because let's be real, that's all anyone cares about πŸ’Έ. I guess this is just another example of how hard it is to scale a business and still keep it afloat πŸ€”.

But you know what really gets me? The city of Philly... they're gonna have to deal with the fallout from this. I mean, we've seen cities struggle when big players like Sonder leave or change hands πŸ’₯. This is definitely not good news for the city's short-term rental market, and it's gonna take some time to recover πŸ•°οΈ.

Just heard about Sonder shutting down their Philly properties πŸ€•... think this is a huge bummer for travelers and locals alike. Who else was gonna rent out apartments instead of those big chain hotels? I know they said it was integration issues with Marriott, but still can't help feeling like they were just too slow to adapt πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Guess we'll have to see what alternative options pop up in the future... fingers crossed for some new players to shake things up 🀞
