Sundance Title ‘How to Divorce During the War’ Boarded by New Europe (EXCLUSIVE)

Exclusive Deal: 'How to Divorce During the War' Sells to New Europe Ahead of Sundance Premiere

In a striking move, Lithuanian director Andrius Blaževičius's feature film "How to Divorce During the War" has been acquired by New Europe Film Sales. The deal marks the third high-profile outing for Blaževičius, following critically acclaimed films like "The Saint" and "Runner".

Set against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the story revolves around Marija, a high-flying executive, who seeks to have an honest conversation with her husband Vytas about their impending divorce - just as war breaks out. The couple must navigate their separation amidst chaos and mid-life crisis, highlighting an eerie duality between domestic struggles and the plight of Ukrainian refugees in Vilnius.

"New Europe Film Sales has been struck by Andrius' vision and universe," says Marcin Luczaj, head of acquisitions at New Europe. "The film blends a relationship drama with societal tension, striking a rare tonal balance that's both emotionally raw and sharply observant."

Featuring an ensemble cast, the film boasts an impressive creative team behind it, including DP Narvydas Naujalis, editor Anna Johnson Ryndová, production designer Greta Vileikytė, and composer Jakub Rataj. The project is produced by Marija Razgute of M-Films (Lithuania), with co-producers from Red Lion (Luxembourg), Feline Films (Ireland), and Bionaut (Czech Rep.).

With its unique blend of relationship drama and war film, "How to Divorce During the War" is poised to be a standout at this year's Sundance Film Festival. As part of New Europe's expanding slate, the deal cements the company's reputation for championing emerging voices in international cinema.

The acquisition marks an exciting development in Blaževičius's career, following his previous successes at film festivals like Warsaw and Busan. With "How to Divorce During the War", he has cemented himself as a talent to watch, crafting a powerful narrative that will undoubtedly resonate with audiences worldwide.

I'm so hyped about this new film! I mean, who doesn't love a good drama about marriage and war? 🤯 The fact that it's set during the Russia-Ukraine invasion is really timely and shows how personal struggles can happen even in the midst of chaos. Andrius Blaževičius is like a genius or something, blending relationship drama with societal tension so well - it sounds super emotional and thought-provoking! 🎥 The Sundance premiere is going to be lit, I'm defo watching this one 😅

omg u guys i just saw this news and i am literally SHAKEN 😱... 'How to Divorce During the War' is like the most important film of our generation 🤯 it's about the human condition, love, loss, war... everything! how can a director capture the essence of that in one movie?! and the fact that it sold to New Europe Film Sales ahead of Sundance premiere is like a dream come true for fans worldwide 🙏 i need to see this film ASAP and talk about it with everyone who loves cinema 💬

Can you believe this deal? 🤯 New Europe Film Sales swooping in like a rescue mission for Lithuanian director Andrius Blaževičius's latest film "How to Divorce During the War". It's not just about acquiring another flick, it's about recognizing talent and giving emerging voices a platform. Reminds me of how our politicians are always talking about supporting local artists and innovators... where was the support when they needed it most? 🤔 Still, you gotta give credit to New Europe for taking a chance on this film, especially with the Sundance premiere coming up. It's like the whole film industry is saying 'we see you' to the struggles of Ukrainian refugees in Vilnius... that's what we call global citizenship 😊

Drama alert! 💥 Relationship goals... NOT 🙅‍♀️

I just watched an old episode of Friends the other day 🤷‍♀️ and it got me thinking... this new film 'How to Divorce During the War' is kinda like that scene in the show where Rachel's trying to have a conversation with Ross about their impending divorce, but on steroids 💁‍♀️. I mean, can you imagine having to navigate your relationship drama while war is breaking out? It sounds super intense 🤯. I'm curious to see how Blaževičius handles that kind of tension in the film. And it's nice to see a Lithuanian director getting some recognition for their work - I always loved learning about Eastern European cultures, reminds me of my grandma's cooking 😊.

🎥 I think it's crazy how a movie can tackle such heavy topics like war and divorce in the same story 🤯. The way the director blended these two seemingly unrelated themes is genius 💡. It's like, we're so used to seeing stories about war as this super serious, dramatic thing, but to also explore relationships and midlife crises alongside it? That's bold and necessary 🙌. I'm hyped for this film, can't wait to see how it plays out at Sundance 🎬!

omg can u believe this movie is actually gonna be released in 2025?! 🤯 it sounds like such an intense emotional rollercoaster - i mean who hasn't had a fight with their significant other when war breaks out, right? 😂 but seriously, the fact that it's set against the backdrop of russia's invasion of ukraine is so thought-provoking. i love how the director is blending these two seemingly unrelated themes together to create this unique narrative. and can we talk about the ensemble cast for like 10 seconds 🤩 i need to see who's in it ASAP!

omg, just what we all needed - another war drama about marriage lololol think they're tackling 'hard topics' but it's literally just "i'm going to be in war and my husband is divorced" 🤷‍♀️ but hey, at least the cinematography looks on point 💁‍♀️

omg u guys! i cant even handle how much i love Andrius Blaževičius!!! 🤩 his new film "How to Divorce During the War" sounds like its gonna be SO emotional! i mean, navigating divorce in the middle of war is literally the ultimate test of love and relationships. and the fact that it's set against the backdrop of russia's invasion of ukraine in 2022 just adds to the drama 🤯 cant wait to see how he weaves all those threads together on the big screen! 💥

oh man, this movie sounds so emotional 🤕 I'm really feeling for Marija, her situation is literally a nightmare amidst all the chaos of war... it's like, how do you even have conversations when the world outside is falling apart? 💔 and I love that the film tries to balance those domestic struggles with the bigger picture of Ukrainian refugees in Vilnius - it's not always easy to find that tone, but I'm excited to see it done right. Andrius Blaževičius is a name I need to be keeping an eye on, his films sound like they're going to really challenge and move audiences 🎥

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about... another war drama trying to pass itself off as something more interesting by tackling relationships in a chaotic backdrop 🤔. I mean, it's like every other war film out there - people struggling, bullets flying, yadda yadda. And now they're trying to make me feel bad for my marriage problems while Ukraine is getting bombed 💔? Give me a break. Don't get me wrong, the cast and crew seem talented enough, but it's just another Sundance darling in my book 🎥.
