Suspect in SF Polo Field child sex assault case struggled with mental health issues: family

San Francisco Suspect's Desperate Plea: Family Cites Mental Health Issues in a Bid to Spare His Life

The 19-year-old suspect arrested for the alleged molestation of a 13-year-old girl at Golden Gate Park's Polo Field is facing multiple felony charges. The family, particularly his grandmother Elsa Buitrago, has been vocal about the young man's struggles with mental health issues.

According to sources close to the family, the suspect was abandoned by his parents due to their addiction and has since been living on the streets. His grandmother took him in at the age of three but notes that he had "schizophrenia, mental developmental delay, mild autism, ADHD, depression, anxiety." Buitrago pleaded with the judge to show leniency towards her grandson.

"My son is not a criminal," she said. "He's a very sick child, and it should be taken into consideration."

In an unprecedented move, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins requested that the court hold the suspect without bail, citing him as a threat to public safety. The young man was unable to secure a public defender due to scheduling conflicts.

As the case unfolds, concerns over his mental state remain at the forefront. His family and supporters argue that he wasn't in a state of mind to commit such an act.

"I know because I have raised him," Buitrago stated during her emotional plea.

The district attorney described the suspect's history as "a tragic case" where his childhood was marred by neglect, but emphasizes the severity of his alleged actions.

I feel bad for this kid, he's literally been through so much in his life already. Mental health issues are no joke and it's crazy how some people can just forget that when there's a crime involved 🤯. His grandma is right though, he's not thinking clearly because of his conditions. It's hard to say what would've happened if he didn't have all these other stuff going on in his life 🤔

🤔 This case highlights the complexities of mental health and the need for compassionate understanding in the justice system. The fact that the 19-year-old suspect has a long history of mental health issues, including schizophrenia, autism, and ADHD, raises questions about whether he was capable of making informed decisions at the time of the alleged incident. His grandmother's emotional plea, despite the district attorney's concerns, underscores the importance of considering alternative perspectives in cases like these. 💡 It's also striking to note how his family's circumstances, marked by abandonment and neglect, have had a profound impact on his life and well-being. 🤗

Ugh I feel so bad for this kid, it's like he's already got one foot out the door what with being abandoned by his parents and all... 🤕 His grandma is really speaking truth here though, mental health issues can be so unpredictable, you never know when things are gonna take a turn for the worse. It's not just about "he committed a crime", it's about understanding that he might've been in a moment of desperation or whatever. I wish we could focus more on getting these kids the help they need rather than locking them up ASAP... 🤝

you know how our society treats people who are struggling with mental health issues? like they're completely broken or something. this 19-yr-old guy is living on the streets since he was a kid, and now he's facing felony charges for something that might not even be in his control. it's like we're more concerned about public safety than actually helping these people. his grandma is right, he's not a criminal, he's just really sick 🤕. and what's with the bail system? it's like we're throwing people away before they've even had a chance to get help. i think we need to rethink our approach to mental health and start showing more compassion ❤️.

OMG u wont believe whats going on w/ this guy from SF... so like he got caught doing something super bad 2 a 13 yr old girl @ Polo Field 🤯👀 and now his fam is trying 2 save him by revealing how messed up his mental health is 😭💔. I mean, I feel bad 4 the kid but like what if he really DID do it? 🤷‍♀️ I guess u can never be too sure w/ someone who's got schizophrenia & all that jazz 🤯. His fam says he was abandoned by his parents & lived on the streets b4 they took him in @ age 3, which is wild 🤯. And now they're trying 2 get him leniency from the judge, but the DA is like no way 🙅‍♂️. This whole thing is just soooo drama 🎭...

aww poor guy 🤗 his grandma is literally fighting for him and I just wanna give this 19-yr-old a big hug ❤️ I feel so bad for him having to go through all this at such a young age, mental health issues are super tough to deal with, especially when you're struggling to get the help you need 🤯 his grandma's words really made me feel sorry for her grandson too - she just wants what's best for him 💖

I don't get why they're not considering treatment for him first? 🤔 Like, what's the worst that could happen if he gets some help? We're talking mental health issues here, not just a cold-blooded crime... My heart goes out to Elsa Buitrago, I can only imagine how hard it must be to deal with all this 😕. And honestly, I think we should be looking at ways to support families who are going through similar struggles rather than punishing the kid for something that might not even be in his control 🤷‍♀️. What do you guys think? Shouldn't we be focusing on rehabilitation over punishment? 🤔
