Teenager Convicted of Murdering 16-Year-Old in Central London During New Year's Eve Altercation
A shocking verdict has been delivered in the case of Areece Lloyd-Hall, an 18-year-old who was found guilty of murdering Harry Pitman, 16, during a violent altercation on New Year's Eve two years ago. The conviction came after a jury returned a unanimous verdict in favor of the prosecution, with 11 members voting for murder and one for manslaughter.
The incident occurred at a midnight gathering in Primrose Hill, a popular spot for fireworks displays, where Lloyd-Hall and Pitman had met while watching the festivities. However, things took a deadly turn when the two boys clashed after Pitman bumped into one of Lloyd-Hall's friends, leading to a heated confrontation that ended with Lloyd-Hall pulling out a knife and stabbing Pitman in the neck.
Mobile phone footage showed Lloyd-Hall brandishing the knife and swinging it down on to Pitman's neck, as Pitman swung a punch. Video footage from a police bodycam then captured Pitman stumbling through the crowd, holding his neck and seeking help from nearby officers before collapsing shortly after midnight.
Lloyd-Hall had initially denied any intention to kill Pitman, claiming he thought he was just hitting him with the sheath of his blade in an attempt to get away. However, during a retrial, the jury delivered a guilty verdict, finding Lloyd-Hall responsible for murder.
The court heard that Harry Pitman was described as a "lively" college student who had been enjoying the fireworks before the altercation, and was one of 18 teenagers stabbed to death in London in 2023. The Metropolitan Police released a statement on Tuesday, describing the tragedy and condemning Lloyd-Hall's actions.
"The tragic loss of such a bright and promising young life is a profound tragedy that will forever be felt by all who knew and loved him," said DI Daniel Catmull from the Met's specialist crime command. "While justice has been served, it is a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the importance of working together to prevent such incidents in the future."
