The best recent crime and thrillers – review roundup

As the new year begins, fans of crime and thrillers are spoiled for choice with an array of gripping novels that promise to keep them on the edge of their seats. At the forefront of this crop is 'The Murder at World's End' by Ross Montgomery, a masterfully crafted locked-room mystery set in 1910 on a remote tidal island off the Cornish coast.

Montgomery's debut for adults sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting series, as Decima, a feisty and independent maiden aunt, becomes embroiled in the investigation into the murder of Lord Conrad Stockingham-Welt. With its intricate plot twists and red herrings, 'The Murder at World's End' is reminiscent of Agatha Christie classics.

Another standout novel is 'The Confessions' by Paul Bradley Carr, a timely thriller that explores the darker side of AI and technology. When the LLIAM algorithm suddenly goes offline, chaos erupts as secrets and lies are revealed to those who have been trusting it with their deepest desires and darkest fears. As CEO Kaitlan Goss frantically searches for the human 'mother' of the AI system, she must confront her own demons in order to restore the technology to its former glory.

Meanwhile, 'The Good Nazi' by Samir Machado de Machado is a gripping historical thriller that delves into the world of 1930s Berlin. On board an airship bound for Rio de Janeiro, Bruno Brückner, a police detective with a keen eye for detail, must unravel a complex web of clues and deceit to uncover the truth behind a murder that threatens to upend the fragile social order of the passengers.

In 'Bluff' by Francine Toon, the author skillfully explores themes of guilt and regret as two narratives converge in the small Scottish coastal town of St Rule. As Cameron returns home on Christmas Eve, he becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth about his lost love, Joanie, whose disappearance has left him with a lifetime of unanswered questions.

Last but not least, 'The Token' by Sharon Bolton is an expertly crafted thriller that raises the stakes in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. As seven strangers receive mysterious notes promising them a share of billionaire Logan Quick's fortune, they are drawn into a deadly game of deception and betrayal, with the prize becoming increasingly elusive as the body count rises.

Each of these novels promises to deliver an unforgettable reading experience, replete with twists, turns, and suspenseful plotlines that will keep even the most seasoned thriller fans on the edge of their seats.

📚 The new year is all about trying out some gripping thrillers, right? I'm so down for it! 🤩 One thing that's really got me excited is how these authors are pushing the boundaries of storytelling. 'The Murder at World's End' sounds like a masterclass in locked-room mysteries, and 'The Confessions' is like a sci-fi thriller that explores the darker side of AI - I'm intrigued by the whole LLIAM algorithm thing 🤖.

And then there's 'The Good Nazi', which I think could be really thought-provoking. The historical setting is super interesting, and Bruno Brückner sounds like an awesome detective character 👮‍♂️. But what I love about these books is how they all have that extra layer of depth - whether it's the emotional stakes in 'Bluff' or the cat-and-mouse game in 'The Token', there's something for everyone here 📊.

What I'm really looking forward to is seeing which one will be my new guilty pleasure 😏. Anybody else got a favorite thriller series they're currently obsessed with? Let's get the conversation started! 💬

🤯 I'm still trying to wrap my head around how we've gone from Agatha Christie to AI-powered thrillers in just a few years 🤖💻 I mean, don't get me wrong, 'The Confessions' is super creepy and all, but can we talk about how we're already at the point where our tech is so advanced it's got its own "mother" 😱? And what's up with Logan Quick's fortune? Is this some kind of wild bet or something? 🤑 Either way, I'm sold on these new thrillers - 'The Murder at World's End' is definitely giving me those classic Agatha vibes 📚👮‍♀️

OMG 🤩 I'm like soooo hyped for these new thrillers!!! 'The Murder at World's End' sounds AMAZING 😍 I love a good locked-room mystery, and Decima sounds like such an awesome protagonist! And then there's 'The Confessions', I've been hearing so much about AI and tech gone wrong, it gives me the chills 😱. But honestly, all of these novels are giving me LIFE 💖 I need to get my hands on them ASAP!

I'm super excited for 2025 and all the thrillers coming out! 🤯 I think what's really cool is how these authors are exploring themes like technology gone wrong (AI in 'The Confessions') and historical settings (in 'The Good Nazi'). It's like, we're living in a time where AI is becoming more integrated into our lives, so it's only natural that writers would start tackling those kinds of topics.

But what I really love about these novels is how each one has its own unique style and tone. From the locked-room mystery of 'The Murder at World's End' to the historical thriller vibes of 'The Good Nazi', there's something for everyone. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good whodunit or a thriller that keeps you guessing till the very end? 📚👀

I'm so over this new generation of writers trying to be like Agatha Christie, it's just not the same 🙄. I mean, don't get me wrong, these books sound great and all, but where's the originality? Back in my day, we had real authors who could spin a yarn that'd keep you guessing till the very end.

I'm still waiting for one of these newbies to come along and write something like Gillian Flynn or Tana French. That's when you know you've got a real thriller on your hands 🔥. Until then, I'll just stick to my old favorites and leave the new stuff for the younger folks 😊.

omg u gotta read "The Murder at World's End" by Ross Montgomery its literally got everythn a good agatha christie novel has 🤯😲 i mean decima is already so cool i love how she's all feisty and independent lol but seriously the plot twists are insane i dont even wanna say anythin to spoil it for u just trust me on this one 🤫📚

📚 "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke 😐 I'm not sure if anyone's doing anything about these AI-related issues... technology just seems so all-consuming lately and it's making me a bit uneasy 🤔

📚 just finished 'The Murder at World's End' by Ross Montgomery 😱 this locked-room mystery has got me hooked 🕵️‍♀️ decima is a fierce one, love her feisty attitude 👯‍♀️ can't wait to see what the rest of the series brings 💥

omg yaaas i am SO stoked about these new thrillers coming out in 2025!!! 🤩 'The Murder at World's End' is already giving me Agatha Christie vibes, and I am HERE FOR IT! 😂 and can we talk about 'The Confessions'... AI gone rogue? no thank you, but i love the concept! also 'The Good Nazi' sounds sooo intense, like a historical thriller dream come true! 🤯 meanwhile, 'Bluff' is giving me those feels of a small town mystery, and i am low-key invested in Cameron's story... 👀 lastly, 'The Token' has got me hooked on that high-stakes game of cat and mouse, it's like they took all my favorite thriller tropes and mashed them into one! 🎯 can't wait to dive into these books ASAP!! 😍

🤯 I'm so over this obsession with locked-room mysteries! Don't get me wrong, they're fun and all, but can we mix it up a bit? Like, what about some novels that explore the human side of things? We're always talking about the AI and tech stuff, but how about some stories that really dive into our emotions and relationships?

I mean, 'The Confessions' sounds interesting, but I'm not sold on the whole "AI gone rogue" thing. Can't we have a more nuanced exploration of what it means to be human? 🤖

And while I love the setting of 'The Good Nazi', can we please talk about how some of these novels are just so... convenient? Like, come on! A murder on an airship with a cast of suspicious passengers? It's like they're just setting up for a classic whodunit. Where's the originality?

Give me something that really takes risks and challenges my expectations. Maybe a novel that subverts genre expectations or pushes the boundaries of storytelling altogether. That's what I want to read, not just another predictable thriller. 📚

idk why everyone's hating on Ross Montgomery for his debut novel "The Murder at World's End". I think its kinda cool how he's paying homage to Agatha Christie classics while still bringing a fresh perspective to the genre 🤔. Decima's character is so intriguing, and the plot is expertly woven with some seriously clever red herrings 🔍. And can we talk about Paul Bradley Carr's "The Confessions"? AI and technology are just begging for a thriller like this, imo 💻. its not perfect, but I think its a bold take on the genre 📚
