The Switch 2 is getting a new Virtual Console (kind of)

Nintendo's Virtual Console was a staple of the Wii and Wii U consoles, allowing gamers to download and play classic games from various consoles. However, in 2018, Nintendo discontinued the service, opting for a paid subscription-based model instead.

Hamster Corporation, on the other hand, has announced that it will be reviving this concept with its new "Console Archives" series, which will offer downloadable versions of retro console games for individual purchase on the Switch 2. This move is seen as a direct response to Nintendo's decision, allowing gamers to once again access their favorite classic titles.

The first two releases in the Console Archives lineup are the original PlayStation snowboarding game Cool Boarders and the NES action platformer Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos. Both games will be available for $12 and $8 respectively, with more obscure titles, including Doraemon and Sonic Wings Special, promised to follow.

Hamster Corporation is behind the Arcade Archive series, which has been offering individual arcade games for purchase and emulation on modern consoles since 2014. The company's efforts have included some of Nintendo's classic arcade titles, which were never officially released on the Virtual Console.

The new console archives will offer a more bare-bones experience than Digital Eclipse's full-fledged interactive museums but still include features such as customizable button layouts, screen settings, and the ability to save and load at any time. Hamster Corporation is also calling out to game developers who own the rights to classic titles, inviting them to license or sell these rights in order for more games to be released.

This move may come as a welcome relief for gamers looking to revisit their childhood favorites or experience new classics on modern hardware. With the rise of subscription services and the shift towards digital distribution, it's reassuring to see companies like Hamster Corporation keeping the spirit of retro gaming alive.

omg yaaas ๐Ÿคฉ this is awesome news!!! finally someone is stepping up to fill the void left by Nintendo's discontinued Virtual Console service! ๐Ÿ’ป I mean, who doesn't love reliving childhood nostalgia and playing those classic games on a new console? ๐Ÿ˜† it's great to see Hamster Corporation jumping into the fray with their Console Archives series. The prices are super reasonable too - $8 for Ninja Gaiden II is a steal! ๐Ÿ˜… can't wait to see more obscure titles like Doraemon and Sonic Wings Special get added to the lineup ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ’ฅ let's hope the devs who own those classic games licenses them ASAP so we don't have to wait forever ๐Ÿ‘

OMG ๐Ÿคฉ, I'm so stoked to hear that someone is bringing back the Virtual Console vibe! It's been ages since we could just buy and play our fave classic games on Switch 2 ๐ŸŽฎ. I mean, who didn't love reliving childhood memories with Cool Boarders and Ninja Gaiden II? ๐Ÿค” The fact that Hamster Corp is doing this without being all extra about it, like Digital Eclipse's interactive museums are cool and all, but also kinda pricey ๐Ÿ’ธ, makes me happy ๐Ÿ˜Š. It's just a more chill way to play the games we love, you know? And the prices are super reasonable too! I'm already hyped for the other titles they're gonna release ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿ‘€

You know what's wild? I was just thinking about this the other day... have you ever noticed how some foods taste better when they're older? Like, my grandma's famous chocolate chip cookies are still amazing even after a few years from baking, but new ones can be kinda meh ๐Ÿช๐Ÿ˜. Maybe it's because the flavors have melded together in the fridge or something ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Anyway, back to retro gaming... I'm all for this new "Console Archives" series! Who doesn't love playing classic games again? It's like a trip down memory lane ๐Ÿ“š. I still have my original NES console collecting dust on my shelf, and it'd be awesome to play some of those oldies on the Switch 2. Let's hope they get more obscure titles in there too, I'm all about discovering new retro faves!

man, i'm so down for this ๐Ÿคฉ hamster corp is stepping up and filling the void left by nintendo's virtual console ๐Ÿ˜” it's crazy how many people were feeling left out when they ditched that service. now we get to relive our childhood faves on switch 2 ๐ŸŽฎ i'm hyped about cool boarders and ninja gaiden II, but also a bit bummed that nintendo didn't do this themselves... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ either way, it's awesome that hamster corp is embracing the retro gaming scene ๐Ÿ’ป they're making it easy for devs to license their rights, so we can expect more classics to come out. let's hope they keep pushing out new stuff like this ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿค” I'm loving this move by Hamster Corporation! It's about time someone stepped in to fill the void left by Nintendo discontinuing the Virtual Console ๐Ÿ™„. The fact that they're offering individual downloads for classic games is a great way to give gamers more control over what they buy and when ๐Ÿ’ธ.

I've got to say, I'm stoked to see some of my childhood favorites getting a new lease on life ๐Ÿ˜†. Cool Boarders and Ninja Gaiden II are two of the first releases in this lineup, and at $12 and $8 respectively, it's a steal ๐Ÿค‘. The fact that they're also including more obscure titles like Doraemon and Sonic Wings Special is just icing on the cake ๐ŸŽ‚.

It's also awesome to see Hamster Corporation calling out to game developers who own the rights to classic titles ๐Ÿค. This could lead to some amazing new releases, and I'm all for it ๐Ÿ˜„. With the rise of subscription services and digital distribution, it's refreshing to see a company keeping the retro gaming spirit alive ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

Overall, I think this is a huge win for gamers who want to revisit their childhood favorites or experience new classics on modern hardware ๐Ÿ’ฏ. Bring on more Console Archives releases! ๐ŸŽฎ

man i'm so hyped about this console archives thing ๐Ÿคฉ hamster corp is like totally stepping up to fill the void left by nintendo discontinuing virtual console. cool that they're offering individual purchases instead of a subscription model, it's more in line with what gamers want tbh. plus its awesome that they're trying to get game devs on board to release their classic titles. ninja gaiden 2 is one of my all time faves btw ๐Ÿ™Œ $8 for doraemon? yes please! can't wait to see what other retro gems they'll release ๐Ÿ’ฅ

omg ๐Ÿคฏ i'm so hyped about hamster corp reviving console archives!!! ๐ŸŽฎ they're bringing back classic games from all sorts of consoles - what if they do a console archives series for nintendo 64 and snes too?! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ that would be amazing! ๐Ÿ‘€ i wish the original virtual console was still around, but i guess it's better to have this option now. did hamster corp already talk to nintendo about licensing their games? ๐Ÿค” and what's with the pricing - $12 for cool boarders is a bit steep, imo ๐Ÿ’ธ
