'They're all bad – but some are worse than others': every Harlan Coben show rated

A review of Harlan Coben's TV adaptations!

The reviewer seems to have mixed opinions on the adaptations, but overall, they're not impressed.

**Missing You (2025, Netflix)**: A rare standout in the series. The reviewer praises the female protagonist, Detective Kat Donovan, and the show's ability to pass the Bechdel test.

**Lazarus (2025, Prime Video)**: A mess of a show that seems to have removed all the campiness that makes Harlan Coben's books enjoyable. The script, acting, pacing, and plot are all considered dreadful.

**Shelter (2023, Prime Video)**: Has potential but is marred by too many plot threads and inconsistencies. The reviewer enjoyed the performances of the two lead actors but found the overall show to be dull and forgettable.

**The Stranger (2020, Netflix)**: Coben's own book, which he claims took only three weeks to write, suffers from gaping plot holes. The show is often funny but also frequently confusing.

**Worse than expected**: Other adaptations like **Lazarus**, **Shelter**, and the entire series overall seem to have failed to capture the essence of Harlan Coben's books.

You know what's weird, I was just reading about how bees communicate with each other through dance 🐝👯‍♀️, it's like they're having their own little parties in the hive! Anyway, back to Harlan Coben... have you read any of his books? I mean, I've heard good things about them, but I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about. My friend's sister-in-law loves those mystery novels, and she's always raving about them 📚💡

idk what's more annoying, harlan coben's books that are way too predictable or his tv shows that are just plain confusing 🙄📺. i mean, can't they just make a show that's not so... meh? 😴 at least the female lead in "missing you" was somewhat redeeming 👩‍💼 but overall, these adaptations are just a mess. and what's up with harlan coben claiming he wrote his book in 3 weeks? sounds like a solid excuse for a lousy plot 💁‍♂️

I'm a bit disappointed in how they're reviewing these shows, it's always hard to see a favorite book get messed up on screen 🤕. I mean, **Lazarus** is literally my least fave adaptation, but at least the reviewer said it was a mess 😂. I think that's fair, because it just didn't capture Harlan Coben's unique style. And omg, who agrees with them that **The Stranger** is funny? I loved it when I watched it last year... wait, what was I saying? 🤔... anyway, maybe they're right about the show suffering from plot holes, but I don't know if that's necessarily a bad thing for an adaptation.

I'm totally with the reviewer on this one 😒 I mean, some shows like **Missing You** are actually really solid, especially with that strong female lead, but then you've got **Lazarus** and it's just a total mess 🤯 Like what happened to Harlan Coben's campy charm? It's like they took all the fun out of his books and left us with something super bland. And don't even get me started on **The Stranger**, I mean, three weeks to write the whole thing and it still had plot holes? No thanks 🙅‍♂️ At least some shows like **Shelter** tried to adapt his style but just couldn't quite nail it. Overall, I think these adaptations have failed to capture the essence of Harlan Coben's books, sadly 😔

just saw that harlan coben's new show "missing you" is actually kinda decent 🤷‍♂️, but let's be real, it's not like any of his other adaptations are worth watching 📺😴 i mean, who needs a 5-star rating when the original books are still on netflix with no issues? 🙄 and don't even get me started on the "funny" part in "the stranger"... more like laughable 😂. but hey, if you're into that sorta thing, go for it... 👎

I don't get why people are so hyped about these TV adaptations 🤔. I mean, they're just a watered down version of the real thing, if you ask me. And honestly, most of them are pretty bad 😐. Like, **Lazarus** is literally a mess - what's the point of having a great campy vibe from the books if you just take it all away? 🤷‍♂️ And don't even get me started on **Shelter**, it has some good performances but everything else falls flat... I guess if you're into that sorta thing, you might enjoy 'em, but I'll stick to reading the actual books, thanks! 👍

omg u guys i'm so confused about harlan coben's tv adaptations rn 🤯 i loved missing you tho the actress playing detective kat was literally perfection 😍 but lazarus is like what the heck did they do to this show 🚮 it looks so boring and messy compared to his books idk what happened but prime video needs to step up their game 🙅‍♂️ also shelter had potential but ugh too many plot threads i get what you're saying about the stranger tho the bechdel test is important lol maybe they should've watched more harlan coben's books 📚

Ugh I'm so over these TV adaptations. I mean, what happened to just sticking to the books, you know? 🤷‍♂️ Like, Lazarus is literally a mess – it's like they took all the fun out of Harlan Coben's writing and replaced it with just bland, boring storytelling. And don't even get me started on Shelter... I was so invested in the leads, but the show itself just dragged on forever with too many plot twists that didn't make sense. The Stranger is also super confusing – I mean, I loved the book, but the TV version was like trying to drink from a firehose, you know? 🌪️ At least Missing You managed to get something right, even if it was just the female lead... but still, can't we just leave the books alone? 🙄

🤕 I feel you, it's always disappointing when a show doesn't live up to our expectations, especially when it's based on a favorite book 📚. I think what bothers me most about these adaptations is that they seem to have lost the charm and campiness that makes Harlan Coben's books so enjoyable 😊. The Stranger was like that for me too - funny one minute and confusing the next... ugh! 🙄 At least Missing You was a bright spot, I loved Detective Kat Donovan and how she kicked some serious butt 💪.

i think this is a great example of how even when we love something, it can still be disappointing if it's adapted or executed poorly 🤔. i mean, coben's books are known for being fun and easy to read, but when you take that away, it's hard to make the same magic work on screen. sometimes adaptation is like trying to put a square peg in a round hole - it just doesn't fit 💡. maybe what we need is to focus on why coben's books are so enjoyable in the first place? is it because they're clever and twisty, or is it because they're relatable and character-driven 📚? whatever it is, let's try to preserve that essence in our adaptations instead of trying to force something new that doesn't work 😊.

I gotta disagree with this reviewer, they're being super harsh on Cobra Kai 😒 I mean, I loved the first season but it just got better from there. And what's up with all these shows failing to capture the essence of his books? Maybe that's because they're trying too hard to be faithful to the source material? Let the creators put their own spin on things and make it work! And can we talk about how much I'm still rewatching The Five People You Meet in Heaven 🤯 that one's a banger.

omg i totally get what the reviewer means about Shelter it had so much potential but i think the pacing was really off for me too! 🤔📺 but yay for Missing You tho! Detective Kat Donovan is SO cool 💁‍♀️💡 and i love that the show passed the Bechdel test 🎉👫

I'm not surprised at all that they're trashing most of the adaptations 🤔. I mean, can you imagine someone adapting their own work into a TV show? It's bound to be a disaster. And don't even get me started on how campy Harlan Coben's books are - trying to tone it down for TV is just gonna make them look lame 😴. The fact that they're praising the female lead in one of the shows is probably just a PR stunt, you know? They want people to think the show is more inclusive and stuff 🤷‍♀️. And poor Detective Kat Donovan... I'm sure she's got some serious character development issues to work through...
