President Trump hints at meeting with newly elected Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a reversal from their heated campaign rhetoric.
In a surprise move, the US President suggested that he may soon meet with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani of New York City, despite previously trading sharp words for each other. "He would like to come to Washington and meet, and we'll work something out," Trump stated, referring to Mamdani. The comment marks a significant shift in their relationship, following a contentious campaign where Trump frequently attacked Mamdani as a "communist lunatic."
Mamdani, 34, won the New York City mayoral election earlier this month, defeating Trump's endorsed candidate Andrew Cuomo. In his victory speech, Mamdani vowed to work with the president if it meant addressing pressing issues like affordability and immigration.
The White House confirmed that Mamdani's team had reached out to the administration "to fulfill a commitment I made to New Yorkers over the course of this campaign," highlighting Mamdani's willingness to engage in dialogue. "We are seeing his actions and that of his administration leading to the exact opposite effect for New Yorkers, and we will go to make the case to the president and anyone else to change these kinds of things if we want to make it easier for New Yorkers to afford their day-to-day necessities," Mamdani added.
Mamdani's team has been proactive in establishing a relationship with the White House, as he prepares to take office on January 1st. In an interview last week with NBC, Mamdani said that this is "a critical relationship" that will be crucial to his success as mayor.
When asked what he would tell Trump, Mamdani replied that he would say: "I'm here to work for the benefit of everyone who calls this city home... and wherever there's a possibility for working together towards that end, I'm ready." The potential meeting between the two leaders could be a significant test of their ability to put aside past differences and find common ground.
