Video Minority Leader Schumer speaks on 5-year anniversary of Jan. 6 Capitol attack

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stood on the Capitol steps to mark a somber milestone: the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, insurrection that shook the very foundations of the US Capitol.

In a solemn speech, Schumer reflected on the events of that fateful day when a mob of loyalists violently breached security, left many injured, and claimed five lives. The attack was a dark stain on American democracy, one that Schumer vowed would never be forgotten or erased from the nation's collective memory.

"This anniversary serves as a stark reminder of the enduring threat to our democracy," Schumer said. "The January 6 insurrection marked a turning point in our country's history โ€“ a brazen attempt to subvert the will of the people and undermine the foundations of our democracy."

Schumer expressed his outrage at the actions of those who participated in or enabled the violence, saying, "Those responsible for this heinous act must be held accountable. We cannot allow the violent rhetoric and extremist ideologies that fueled that attack to continue spreading division and hatred throughout our country."

The five-year anniversary has brought new attention to the January 6 insurrection, with many Americans taking to social media to share their thoughts, memories, and reflections on the event. Schumer's speech serves as a call to action, urging Americans to stand vigilant against threats to democracy and continue fighting for the values of freedom, justice, and equality.

As Schumer concluded his remarks, it was clear that the past five years have left an indelible mark on the nation's psyche. The January 6 insurrection will forever be remembered as a pivotal moment in American history โ€“ a stark reminder of the fragility of democracy and the resilience required to protect it.

๐Ÿค” come on guys, 5 years already? didn't we learn anything from this?? like, the whole "don't storm the capitol" thing is kinda a big deal. can we please just move forward instead of dwelling on the past? ๐Ÿ˜’ Schumer's all about accountability and I'm like, yaaas let's get those responsible for this crazy stuff held accountable! but at the same time, can we focus on the bigger picture here? what's being done to actually prevent this kind of thing from happening again?? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

idk how Schumer can really expect people to forget what happened on Jan 6th... like, we've all been reminded of it so many times since then. i'm not saying we shouldn't be vigilant about protecting our democracy, but at some point you gotta let ppl move on a lil bit ๐Ÿค”. it feels like every year we're still reliving this trauma. also, im not sure if Schumer's all right in calling it just "violent rhetoric and extremist ideologies"... that sounds kinda simplistic to me... was it really just those things? or was there more to it?

๐Ÿค” thinking about this anniversary is like hitting the reset button on our collective consciousness - we gotta confront the darkest corners of our country's past & acknowledge the damage done ๐ŸŒ‘ Jan 6th was a wake-up call for all of us, a stark reminder that extremism can take us down from within ๐Ÿ’ฅ Schumer's speech hit home hard, it's time to hold ppl accountable 4 their actions & make sure we're not gonna let hate spread its wings again ๐Ÿšซ what if we take this as an opportunity 2 come together & reaffirm our values of freedom & justice? โš–๏ธ

omg ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i cant even imagine what those ppl went thru on jan 6th ๐Ÿค• 5 yrs later its still so shocking & sad ๐Ÿ’” Schumer said it all so truthfully, we need more ppl like him fighting for our democracy ๐Ÿ’ช and accountability for those who did this is super important let's keep movin forward towards a more united & free america ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Can't believe it's already been 5 years since that day... ๐Ÿ˜” It's wild how some people can just forget or downplay what happened, but Schumer is keeping it real ๐Ÿ’ฏ We need more voices like him who are willing to confront the truth and hold people accountable for their actions ๐Ÿ™ The anniversary may bring back painful memories, but it's also a reminder of the strength and resilience of our democracy ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Let's keep the conversation going and make sure we don't let hate speech and extremist ideologies spread further ๐Ÿšซ

I donโ€™t usually comment but... this January 6 anniversary thing is really got me thinking ๐Ÿค”. Like, how can we even forget what happened? It's been five whole years since that crazy insurrection at the Capitol and you'd think people would've moved on by now, but nope ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Schumer's speech was super somber and it made me realize just how much of a threat extremism poses to our democracy ๐Ÿšจ. I mean, I get why he's calling for accountability and all that, but what about the people who were actually there? Have they even been held accountable yet? It feels like no one's really moving forward on this...

๐Ÿ˜’ Another anniversary, another slap in the face to those who'd rather see the US burn than let its people have their say. ๐Ÿšจ Five years on and the US Capitol is still recovering from that day's assault on democracy. It's time for the culprits to face justice ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ and for Americans to wake up and take action against divisive rhetoric and extremism ๐Ÿ’”

Ugh, can't believe Schumer is still bringing this up every year ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's like, we get it, January 6 was a bad day for the US. We don't need a annual reminder of that ๐Ÿ˜’. And honestly, how many times do we really need to see footage of riot gear-clad people and broken glass? My mental health can only take so much ๐Ÿคฏ.

And can we please just have some real discussion about the root causes of this insurrection? Like, was it just a bunch of MAGA-hat-wearing lunatics or is there something deeper going on in our country? It feels like Schumer's just throwing the same talking points at us every year and expecting us to be all outraged again ๐Ÿ™„.

I'm not saying I condone what happened that day, but come on, can't we move forward now? This anniversary thing feels like a total spectacle for Schumer's benefit ๐ŸŽญ. And honestly, if he really wanted to make an impact, maybe instead of just giving some more speeches, he should be working with lawmakers to actually pass some meaningful reform legislation ๐Ÿค”.
