Witchboard review – New Orleans couple channel dead French witch in fun occult thriller

"Witchboard" Review: A Cheesy Thriller with a Star Turn from Jamie Campbell Bower

The supernatural thriller "Witchboard" brings the dark world of the occult to modern-day New Orleans, and for the most part, it's a messy but entertaining ride. The standout performance belongs to Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Alexander Babtiste, an antiquities expert with a sinister past.

When Bower isn't the central figure in the story, however, "Witchboard" falters, relying on bland, doleful acting from its supporting cast and a cheaply conjured supernatural threat. The real magic happens when Bower takes center stage, delivering his lines with an effortless charm that's equal parts captivating and unsettling.

The movie follows Emily (Madison Iseman), a young woman who stumbles upon a mysterious Ouija board in the woods while foraging for mushrooms. As she begins to use the board, Emily becomes embroiled in a world of spirit possessions and flashbacks to a life she never lived – all courtesy of the 17th-century French witch that the board has summoned.

The trailer showcases some impressive production design, particularly when it comes to recreating an authentic New Orleans setting. Christian's (Aaron Dominguez) hipster-chef lifestyle is also noteworthy, if only for its attempt at injecting a modicum of realism into the proceedings.

However, "Witchboard" ultimately relies on low-budget thrills and the special effects capabilities of modern CGI. The visual effects are often laughable, such as the ill-conceived scene where a Maine coon attacks a drug dealer, transforming into a cartoonish blur of fake fur and visual trickery.

Despite its numerous flaws, "Witchboard" occasionally delivers on moments of genuine terror or surprise – largely due to Bower's magnetic presence. When he steals scenes with his signature blend of charisma and menace, the film transcends its campy nature and enters genuinely thrilling territory.

Ultimately, fans of supernatural thrillers may find something to appreciate in "Witchboard," particularly those drawn to Bower's performances. However, viewers seeking a more sophisticated or convincing take on the occult will likely leave feeling disappointed but entertained nonetheless.

idk why they didn't cast bower for the lead role from the start lol 🤷‍♂️, he was born to play that role... and btw, what's with all these ouija boards in movies lately? 😅 makes me wanna get a bunch and try it out myself (no way lol) 💀

idk wut's up w/ dis movie tho? its like 1 min of jamie campbell bower being all charming n stuff n then u got ur generic oculus vibes goin on n it feels like u r watchin a different movie lol 🤣

i mean, i know ppl gonna love it cuz of his performance, but i dont no if its wuth all the hype 4 me. n also wut's up w/ the production design in the trailer? its like dey took some pics from youtube & put dem together as a movie lol 📸

anywayz, i heard its based on some true story or somethin... but idk bout dat cuz i didnt read the blurb n all 🤔

idk why they even bothered making this movie 🤷‍♂️ witchboards r so played out already. and that main guy jamie campbell bower is the only one who saves this flick, lol. he's like the only sane person in a world of pretentious new orleans hipsters. i mean, what's next? a movie about a girl who finds an old ouija board in the woods and becomes possessed by a 17th century french witch? come on 🙄

I just saw this movie Witchboard with my friends and I'm still trying to figure out what it was all about 🤔. It had some parts that were super creepy and Jamie Campbell Bower's character was so cool, but then there were other parts where the acting was really bad 😂. And those special effects were kinda laughable... like a cat fighting a dude, what even is that? 🐈😂. But for sure, Jamie's presence in it made it way more interesting and I loved his character! He just has this charm and charisma on screen that makes you wanna watch him more 😎.

I just watched "Witchboard" and I gotta say, Jamie Campbell Bower is giving me major Matthew McConaughey vibes 😎 - he brings that perfect blend of charm and danger to his character. The movie's got some great production design, especially with the New Orleans setting, it feels super immersive. But, oh man, the special effects are kinda laughable 🤣 like something straight out of a cheesy B-movie. Still, Jamie saves the day (or should I say, the night?) with his standout performance, and that's what makes this flick worth checking out 👻💫

OMG u guys I just saw Witchboard and like I'm still reeling from it 🤯 I mean Jamie Campbell Bower is literally the ONLY redeeming factor in this whole movie - his performance is so captivating I was HOOKED! 😍 The way he brings that character to life is seriously unsettling and I loved every minute of it 💀 But ugh the rest of the cast is SO bland idk how they all managed to sleepwalk through their roles 🤦‍♀️ And don't even get me started on the production design - New Orleans looks soooo real but the whole Ouija board thing is just a mess 🎃 I mean I was totally here for it but like at the same time wasn't? 🤔 Overall I'd say if u love Jamie Campbell Bower then Witchboard is def worth a watch, but otherwise idk maybe stick with something else 😐

idk why ppl would watch this tho 🤷‍♂️ i mean its got that one actor jamie campbell bower who's def got some charm but thats about it...the whole movie feels like a lazy attempt at something spooky & supernatural with not much depth to it 🎃 the effects are super cheesy & the acting is subpar 🙄 but hey if u r into that sorta thing & wanna see bower shine, i guess its a decent watch 😐

🤪 this movie is like that one old VHS tape you found in your attic - you know it's gonna be cheesy and corny, but there's just something about it that makes it nostalgic? 📺 for me, Jamie Campbell Bower as the lead is what makes "Witchboard" worth watching, his charm and charisma bring this dark occult thriller to life in a way that's both captivating and unsettling 😱

but let's get real, the rest of the movie can be kinda...meh? 🤔 I mean, the acting from the supporting cast is pretty cringeworthy, and those cheap supernatural effects are laughable (I mean, who thought it was a good idea to make a Maine coon attack someone with CGI fur? 😂).

anyway, if you're into that sorta thing - supernatural thrillers, occult stuff, etc. then I guess "Witchboard" might be worth checking out, especially if you like Jamie Campbell Bower's work 🎬

🤷‍♂️ so I just watched this movie "Witchboard" and I gotta say, it's like they took all the leftover bits from a bad horror movie and mashed 'em together with Jamie Campbell Bower's charm 😏. The guy can make even the cheesiest lines sound believable, but the rest of the cast is just... meh 🙄. And don't even get me started on the special effects - I've seen better CGI in an early 2000s video game 😂. But hey, if you're a fan of supernatural thrillers with a dash of charm, it might be worth a watch 👀

ugh what's up with the production design 🤷‍♂️ it looks like they raided a prop store and just slapped some random stuff together... i mean don't get me wrong jamie campbell bower is actually really good in this, he's got that whole "dark charming" vibe going on 👻 but the rest of the cast just feels like they phoned it in 😐 and can we please talk about how cheesy the CGI is? 🤣 a maine coon attacking a drug dealer looks like something out of a bad 90s horror movie 🙄

tbh i was pretty meh about this movie from the start lol it had that whole supernatural vibe going on which can be kinda cheesy and overused, but hey jamie campbell bower is def one to watch 😎 he brought so much energy to his role as alexander babtiste. but like, the rest of the cast was just meh idk if they were even trying or something. the effects were super low key lol didnt expect them to be laughable tbh, but at least it was entertaining in a campy kinda way? still wouldn't watch again tho

idk what's up with these movies that claim to be scary but end up being just cheesy thrillers 😒 the ouija board plot is so tired, like we haven't seen this before 🙄 and don't even get me started on the production design, it looks like they took a few google searches and called it a day 🤣 jamae campbell bower tho, he's def the real star of the show 👀 his charisma is just infectious, even when the rest of the movie is trying to be boring 💁‍♀️

I gotta say, I was pretty meh about this one 😐. The special effects are straight out of a low-budget horror flick 🎃, and it feels like they're phoning it in. But Jamie Campbell Bower is where it's at 👏. He's got this effortless charm that makes you wanna watch him even when the rest of the movie is tanking. I mean, who else can make a scene-stealing performance out of an antiquities expert with a sinister past? 🤔 The production design in NOLA is actually pretty cool too 💼, but overall it's like they're trying to cram as much horror and mystery into this thing without putting in the effort 📦. Still worth a watch if you're a fan of supernatural thrillers or just wanna see Bower do his thang 🎥

I just saw this movie and I gotta say it was kinda like watching a train wreck - you know you shouldn't be looking, but you can't help yourself . Jamie Campbell Bower though, he's def a scene-stealer! The Ouija board stuff is pretty wild, and the atmosphere in New Orleans is super creepy . But yeah, the rest of it feels a bit cheap and low-budget. Still, if you're into supernatural thrillers, I guess it's worth a watch . 3 out of 5 stars from me 😐

I gotta say, this movie is a bit of a mixed bag 🤔. I mean, Jamie Campbell Bower is totally on point as the lead, he's got that charm and menace thing down pat 💁‍♂️. But the rest of the cast is kinda meh, you know? And don't even get me started on those CGI effects 😂. Like, I love a good Ouija board horror movie, but this one's just not scary enough for me.

On the other hand, the setting in New Orleans is super cool 🎃 and the production design is pretty impressive. But overall, it feels like they're relying too much on cheap thrills and special effects rather than building a compelling story or atmosphere 🔮.

Still, if you're a fan of supernatural thrillers and Jamie Campbell Bower's performances, I'd say give it a shot 👍. Just don't expect too much in terms of originality or scares 😅.

I watched this movie last night 🤔 and I gotta say, Jamie Campbell Bower is the real MVP here 👏. He's like the only one who knows what he's doing in that whole cast. The plot's pretty cheesy and the acting's not great, but whenever he's on screen, it's a different story altogether. The Ouija board stuff is also pretty cool, I liked how they brought the occult to modern-day NOLA 🌃. But, yeah, the special effects are kinda laughable, like something straight out of an early 2000s horror movie 😂. Overall, if you're a fan of Jamie Bower or supernatural thrillers, this might be worth checking out. Otherwise, it's just another mediocre movie 🎥.

I don't know what it is about this movie that makes me think we're all just searching for some kind of meaning in this crazy world, you know? Like Emily, the main character, she's just trying to find her place and connect with something bigger than herself, but ends up getting pulled into this dark world of spirits and possession. It's like we're all just living our own versions of that Ouija board experience - we tap into some dark energy, and who knows what happens next? 🤔

And Jamie Campbell Bower's performance is like a reflection of that darkness, you know? He brings this sense of charm and charisma to the role, but also this underlying menace that makes you wonder what's really going on beneath the surface. It's like we're all just trying to find our own balance between light and dark, and he's just... well, he's just a master at navigating those lines.

The rest of the movie is like a messy, thrilling ride - it's got its ups and downs, but when Bower's on screen, you're hooked. It's like we're all just along for the ride, trying to make sense of it all, one Ouija board session at a time 😂.
