Yankees unlikely to pursue third base market after latest report

Yankees unlikely to splash big money on third base, opting for cost-effective solution instead.

The New York Yankees' offseason priorities are clear, but unfortunately for fans, it means that investing heavily in the hot corner is not at the top of their shopping list this winter. With multiple positions needing attention, the Bombers are faced with a tough decision - where to spend their big bucks.

While there's no shortage of issues to address, including a depleted rotation and bullpen, third base has emerged as the unlikely spot to see significant investment. According to insiders, Chris Kirschner and Kiley McDaniel, it appears that the Yankees will not be pursuing a top-tier upgrade at the position, instead opting for a more cost-effective solution.

This news won't come as a surprise to fans who have been aware of Ryan McMahon's limitations on defense, despite his impressive all-around game. Given his contract situation - two more years at $16 million per year, making him a difficult asset to move - it's likely the Yankees will look for complementary pieces to bolster their offense rather than trading him outright.

One possible option is re-signing Amed Rosario as a left-handed hitting specialist, or signing Kazuma Okamoto from Japan, who could provide an upgrade at a significantly lower cost. According to ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel, Okamoto's posting fee would be $43 million over three years, averaging out to approximately $14.33 million per year.

While this news may not sit well with Yankees fans heading into the winter meetings, it's clear that the team has had to set realistic expectations for their offseason spending. With a depleted rotation and bullpen already taking up significant resources, the decision not to invest big at third base is a pragmatic one - one that will require patience from fans who are hoping to see some meaningful upgrades on the field in 2026.

๐Ÿค” so yeah i think this is a good move by the yankees... its not like they have unlimited money or anything lol. they gotta prioritize and save for the future, plus they already got some guys in the pipeline who could step up at third base. re-signing amed rosario would be sick tho ๐Ÿคฉ he's always been underrated, and having him as a lefty hitting specialist would be huge. and kazuma okamoto sounds like a legit option too... $14m per year is still a bit steep for me, but i guess it's worth it if he's gonna bring some serious juice to the lineup ๐ŸŒฎ. gotta trust the yanks on this one ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿค” they're like "oh we don't wanna splurge on 3B" but they got their whole rotation and bullpen to mess with... i get it, cost effective sounds good but come on, third base is a key spot ๐Ÿšซ what's next? no upgrades at SS or LF either? that's just gonna be one big disappointment season for Yankees fans ๐Ÿ˜”

I don't get why Yankees fans are gonna be all bummed out about this ๐Ÿค”... they gotta make smart decisions with their money, especially with those big contracts they got coming up. Ryan McMahon's defense is just a thing, you know? But hey, at least they're open to signing some cost-effective players like Okamoto or Rosario... that's what it's all about, finding value in the market ๐Ÿ’ธ. And I mean, three years and $43 million for Okamoto is still pretty steep ๐Ÿค‘, but I guess it's better than breaking the bank on someone else.

๐Ÿค” I mean, can't they just splurge a bit for once?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's the Yankees, after all! They've got the money to blow it if they want to, but nope, they're gonna go with the cheap option instead? ๐Ÿค‘ Like what, are we on some kind of budget here or something? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ And don't even get me started on Ryan McMahon... I mean, I know he's not that bad on defense, but come on! Two more years at $16 million per year is a huge waste if they're just gonna stick with him because it's cheaper. ๐Ÿ˜’

I'm low-key disappointed about the Yankees not splurging on 3B this offseason ๐Ÿค”. I mean, they've got the $$$ to make it happen, and with a depleted rotation & bullpen, you'd think they'd want to prioritize defense ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ. Ryan McMahon's defense isn't great, so maybe they're thinking of addressing that in free agency or trades? ๐Ÿ”„ Amed Rosario could be a good fit, but I'm not sure about Kazuma Okamoto - $14.33M/yr is a bit steep for me ๐Ÿ˜’. Still, gotta respect the team's pragmatism here ๐Ÿ™. No need to get your hopes up too high in 2026, but maybe they'll surprise us next year ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

I get it, no surprise that Yankees ain't breakin' the bank for third base just yet ๐Ÿค‘. With all the other holes they need to fill, like their rotation and bullpen, I think it's a smart move to focus on cost-effective solutions instead of shelling out big bucks for one position. Ryan McMahon's defense is solid, but not perfect, so adding some depth around him could be a good way to go ๐Ÿค”. Signing Amed Rosario or Kazuma Okamoto might not be the most glamorous options, but hey, if it means they can stay competitive without sacrificing too much financial flexibility, I'm all for it ๐Ÿ’ธ.

๐Ÿค” umm so i think its weird that the yankees dont wanna splurge on 3rd base lol they need someone to cover up mckee sons errors ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ but then again their rotation and bullpen is a mess ๐Ÿšฝ๐Ÿ’จ maybe re-signing roasio as a lefty specialist or signing kazumoto from japan is a good idea ๐Ÿ‘ thats more like it - not breaking the bank but getting something done ๐Ÿค‘

omg u guys i just can't even think about the yanks offseason priorities rn they gotta fix their rotation & bullpen first lol can't believe they're not prioritizing a big splurge at 3rd base ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ but i guess re-signing amed rosario or signing kazuma okamoto is like a decent plan b? ๐Ÿ’ธ idk man i'm still holding out hope for a major trade or signing lol but realistically it's probably just gonna be a slow rebuild. ๐Ÿ˜”

I feel u ๐Ÿ˜ about the Yankees not splashing big money on third base ๐Ÿค”. I know they've got other issues to fix, but it's always sad when we don't get the upgrade we want ๐Ÿ’”. Ryan McMahon's defense is a concern, and I'm not sure re-signing Amed Rosario or signing Kazuma Okamoto would be enough ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. But hey, being cost-effective doesn't mean they're not gonna improve their team ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Fans just gotta keep it real ๐Ÿ’ฏ and remember that patience is key ๐Ÿ”’. Maybe next year we'll see some big moves ๐Ÿš€!

the yanks gotta think about their $$, but it's still sad when you don't expect big moves ๐Ÿ˜” they're gonna have to get creative with their free agency signings if they wanna make a push for the playoffs... re-signing amed rosario or signing that japan dude kazuma okamoto could be decent options ๐Ÿ‘€

Aww come on ๐Ÿ˜” I was really rooting for them to go all out and get a superstar third baseman! ๐Ÿค  But I guess you can't put a price tag on it ๐Ÿ’ธ. Re-signing Amed Rosario or signing Kazuma Okamoto sounds like a solid plan though ๐Ÿ“ˆ. It's not ideal, but we'll just have to be patient and wait for 2026 โฐ. Maybe they'll surprise us with some awesome trades or signings ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ช. Let's go Yanks! ๐ŸŽ‰

man i feel u on this lol i was hoping for a bigger splash at 3B but idc about ryan mcMahon he's just not that good defensively ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ anyway re-signing amed rosario or signing kazuma okamoto sounds like a solid plan to me, let's see if they can pull it off ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿค” gotta say, I'm shocked they're not splurging on a top-tier third baseman ๐Ÿค‘. like, we all know Ryan McMahon's got his flaws, but at $16 million/year for two more years? it's not like he's gonna break the bank ๐Ÿ˜‚. and honestly, re-signing Amed Rosario as a lefty specialist or signing some dude from Japan for 14 mil/year is a solid move ๐Ÿค‘. i mean, who needs a fancy-schmancy third baseman when you can get by with some scrappy middle-of-the-order pop? ๐Ÿ”ฅ

omg did u think they were gonna break the bank 4 a top-tier 3rd baseman? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ i was thinking they'd sign kazuma okamoto ASAP, but $43 million is def still a lot lol, maybe re-signin amed rosario as a lefty specialist tho that's not bad considering his contract situation ๐Ÿ˜’ yanks fans gotta learn to be patient tho, 2026 might b the year we see some real changes ๐Ÿคž

I'm kinda surprised they're not throwing money at 3rd base tbh... ๐Ÿค‘ I mean, you'd think it's a crucial spot, especially with Ryan McMahon's contract situation ๐Ÿค”. Amed Rosario could be a good option tho, but $43 mil over 3 yrs is still pretty steep ๐Ÿ’ธ. Guess you gotta set realistic expectations for the offseason spending, especially with the rotation and bullpen needing some love too ๐Ÿ’ช. Hope they can find some solid pieces to complement their offense, 'cause that's all fans can ask for at this point ๐Ÿ˜Š.

man, i feel u... $$$ can't be stretched too far esp with rotation & bullpen in shambles ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ‘Ž think they're making smart move re-signing amed rosario or signing okamoto would be sick tho ๐Ÿ‘

I don't know man... I thought for sure they'd make a move for someone like Golatto or something. The Yanks have been pretty quiet so far and now we're supposed to be okay with Amed Rosario hitting lefty? I mean, I get it, the rotation is hurting and the bullpen needs work, but third base can't just be an afterthought, you know? ๐Ÿค”
