Yumi Zouma: No Love Lost to Kindness review – New Zealand dream-poppers' reinvention doesn't go far enough

Yumi Zouma's latest effort, No Love Lost to Kindness, marks a significant shift for the New Zealand dream-pop quartet, but one that may elude their long-time fans. The band has always been known for their airy, lush soundscapes and lightly melancholic tone, honed over a decade of creative work together. Now, however, they're looking to inject more "extreme everything" into their music, with guitarist Charlie Ryder describing the record as their most "friction-filled" creative period yet.

In pursuit of this bold new direction, Yumi Zouma's latest singles have taken on a faster, louder quality, with distorted guitars and bright, catchy hooks. However, these tracks may not be to everyone's taste. While some fans will undoubtedly appreciate the band's foray into more aggressive sounds, others may find themselves stuck in the same dreamy, laid-back terrain that has characterized much of their previous work.

The album's singles – including "Bashville on the Sugar Locks Eyes" and "Blister" – showcase a band still finding its footing in this new sonic landscape. While "Bashville" injects a welcome dose of energy into the mix, its reliance on familiar melodic tropes may make it feel predictable to those who have followed Yumi Zouma's evolution over the years.

It's not until songs like 95 and Waiting for the Cards to Fall that we see more of the band's true potential. The former, a haunting exploration of ambition and homesickness, boasts delicate atmospherics and a surprising folk influence. Meanwhile, "Waiting for the Cards to Fall" – with its stripped-back arrangement and Christie Simpson's emotionally charged vocals – is a poignant study in lost love.

Ultimately, No Love Lost to Kindness feels like a band redefining itself on the fly, rather than undertaking a bold reinvention. While this approach may result in some surprising moments of beauty, it also means that change will take time to sink in. As with any process, growth is rarely instantaneous – and for Yumi Zouma's fans, it may be worth waiting to see how their sound continues to evolve over the coming months.

I'm not sure about this new direction from Yumi Zouma 🤔. I mean, they've been so chill and dreamy for so long, it's like, what's next? They're adding all this extra "extreme everything" to their sound and I'm just not convinced it's gonna stick 🔊. Don't get me wrong, there are some sick tracks here, but I think some fans might be like, totally lost 🗺️. Like, I get that they want to try something new, but do they have to toss the whole vibe of their sound? It feels like they're just trying to fit in with all the other bands who are doing this "extreme everything" thing right now 😒. And don't even get me started on how some of these songs make me wanna cringe 🤢. I'm all for growth and change, but come on Yumi Zouma, take your time! 😅

😊 I'm not sure what's more surprising, the fact that Yumi Zouma is trying something new or if some fans are already getting frustrated with the change. 🤔 I've been listening to these singles and while they're definitely a departure from their usual dreamy sound, I kinda like it? The energy on "Bashville" is infectious and Christie Simpson's vocals on "Waiting for the Cards to Fall" give me chills 🌪️. But at the same time, I get why some fans might feel left behind - it's a big shift from what they're used to. Maybe this is just an opportunity for them to grow and experiment? 💡 Either way, I'm excited to see where their sound takes them next 👂

Omg I'm DYING!!! 🤩 I've been listening to Yumi Zouma nonstop since they dropped "No Love Lost to Kindness" and I have to say, I'm OBSESSED 💖 with the new direction they're taking! The sound is so bold and edgy, it's like a breath of fresh air 😴. Don't get me wrong, some of their older songs are still my JAM 🎸, but this new stuff is NEXT LEVEL 🔥. I mean, have you listened to "95"? 😍 It gives me all the feels! The way they're experimenting with folk vibes and atmospheric soundscapes is pure GENIUS 🤓. And Christie's vocals on "Waiting for the Cards to Fall" are giving me CHILLS 💀. I'm so hyped to see where this new direction takes them and I'll be waiting patiently (not) for more music from Yumi Zouma 🎶. Go, Yumi, go! 👏

🤔 I feel like Yumi Zouma's new direction is a bit of a mixed bag, you know? On one hand, I love the energy and catchiness of some of these singles - it's like they're shaking off that laid-back vibe and trying something new! 🎸 But at the same time, I can see how some fans might be feeling a little left behind. The band is still figuring out this new sound, so some songs are gonna feel a bit meh compared to their older stuff. 😐 Still excited to hear where they go from here tho!

I gotta say, I'm both hyped and kinda worried about Yumi Zouma's new direction 🤔💡. They've always been so dreamy and laid-back, but now they're trying to inject some serious edge into their music 🔥🎸. It's like they're intentionally trying to shake things up, which can be kinda refreshing but also a bit jarring at times 😳. I love that they're taking risks and experimenting with new sounds, especially on tracks like "95" and "Waiting for the Cards to Fall". Those songs are hauntingly beautiful 💔🌙. But yeah, it's gonna take some time for their fans (and me!) to fully get used to this new vibe 🕰️💫. Bring on the evolution! 👏

I gotta say, I'm kinda intrigued by this new direction Yumi Zouma's taking 🤔. They've always been a dreamy band, and it's cool they're shaking things up. But at the same time, I can see why some fans might feel like they're losing that signature sound they love ❤️. The singles are definitely catching my attention - "Bashville" is so upbeat and fun! 💃 but songs like 95 and Waiting for the Cards to Fall show a depth to their music that's really beautiful 🌹. I'm excited to see where this new chapter takes them 🎶

🤔 i think yumi zouma's new direction might be a bit too much of a change for some fans, but i'm hyped to see where they go from here 💥 they're already sounding like a more experimental band than ever, and songs like "95" and "waiting for the cards to fall" are giving me all the feels 😍 it's not about reinventing themselves completely, but refining their sound and pushing boundaries 🎧 i'm excited to see how long this new energy takes hold, might be worth sticking around to see what other goodies they come up with 🤓

🤔 yumi zouma's new album is like a road trip 🚗 - you're not sure where you're going, but the scenery is still pretty and lush 😌. they're trying to mix things up with some heavier sounds, but it's like they're just hitting the brakes on their dreamy vibes for a sec ⛔️. don't get me wrong, i love the energy of tracks like "bashville" and "95" 🎸👏 - but you can still hear the familiar threads of their old sound weaving in 👍. it's gonna take some time to see if this new direction will stick or just be a speed bump 🚧💨

I gotta say, I'm kinda torn about this new direction from Yumi Zouma... on one hand, I love how they're experimenting with some heavier sounds 🤯. It's like they're wakin' up from a dream or somethin', ya know? But at the same time, it feels like they're losin' that same vibe that made 'em so chill and lovable in the first place 😔. I mean, I loved "95" - that song is straight fire 🔥! And Christie's vocals on "Waiting for the Cards to Fall"... wow. That's some next level stuff 🤩. But sometimes it feels like they're just tryin' too hard to be edgy and it comes across as forced 😒. I dunno, maybe I'm just stuck in my ways and need to give 'em more time... or maybe I'll just have to wait for the cards to fall and see how their sound evolves 🤞

🤔 "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." 😊 This new direction might take some getting used to, but I think it's exciting to see Yumi Zouma pushing boundaries and exploring new sounds! The songs that truly stand out are a testament to their creativity and willingness to take risks. It's not always easy for artists to reinvent themselves, but when they do, it can lead to something truly special. 💫

I'm intrigued by Yumi Zouma's new direction 🤔. It feels like they're pushing themselves to grow, which can be both exciting and unsettling. I think it's great that they're experimenting with new sounds, even if not everyone will appreciate them. Some of those singles can be a bit hit-or-miss, but when they land, wow 😍. The album has some real gems, like "95" - it's hauntingly beautiful 💔. For me, the best part is seeing how the band evolves over time 🔄. Will take some time to get used to, but I'm down for the ride 🎢.

I'm intrigued by Yumi Zouma's new direction 🤔💥. I mean, who doesn't love a good sonic evolution? But, at the same time, I can totally understand why some fans might be a bit miffed about the band straying from their tried-and-true soundscapes 😐. I'm not gonna lie, when I first heard those new singles, I was like "is this really Yumi Zouma?" 🤷‍♂️ But then I listened to 95 and Waiting for the Cards to Fall again... and man, that's some next-level stuff 🎶💕. The band is def trying something bold, but maybe that's what makes it so interesting?

so i've been listenin to yumi zouma's new stuff and its kinda got me feelin like they're tryin to shake things up? i mean, its not bad or anythin' but its just a bit...different from what i'm used to from them? their usual dreamy vibes are still there but now theres this whole new level of energy & stuff 🤔

i think some fans might be like "what happened to the laid-back yumi zouma" but others might see it as a good thing? idk, its all good imho. they're tryin somethin new & thats always cool 💖

I'm loving this new direction from Yumi Zouma 🎵👏 They're still figuring out these heavier sounds but it's like they're trying something fresh and exciting. I mean, "Bashville" is catchy as hell but at the same time, it's a bit safe, you know? But then there are tracks like 95 and Waiting for the Cards to Fall that just blow my mind 🤯 Christie Simpson's vocals on those songs are insane. It feels like they're still finding their footing in this new sonic landscape but I'm hyped to see where they go from here. Maybe it'll take a few listens to get used to, but I think Yumi Zouma is capable of something amazing 💥

I'm loving the new direction Yumi Zouma is taking 🤩 but at the same time I'm like, what's happening to my favourite dreamy vibes? 😂 they're still got those catchy hooks but now it's like, boom! loud and fast all over the place 💥. Don't get me wrong, "95" is giving me all the feels though 🎶 it's like a haunting lullaby or something. And Christie Simpson's vocals on "Waiting for the Cards to Fall"... *chef's kiss* 🤗. I'm excited to see how this new sound evolves but I'm also kinda nervous that it'll take some time to get used to 😬.

I'm not entirely sure about this new direction from Yumi Zouma 🤔. I mean, I love a good change of pace in music, but they're still pretty laid-back for my taste 😊. Their new stuff is definitely more upbeat and energetic, which I can appreciate, but some of the singles feel like they're trying too hard to be edgy 🤖. Don't get me wrong, there are some standout tracks like "95" and "Waiting for the Cards to Fall"... those ones are really special ✨. Maybe it's just me being a bit nostalgic for their old dreamy soundscapes 😊. Time will tell if they can make this new direction work, but I'm curious to see where they go from here... 🎶

idk about this shift... they're still trying to inject some edge into their dreamy sound, but its kinda like they're forcing it 🤔. i mean, who wants more "extreme everything" when you've got a formula that works? for me, its always been about the airiness and lightness of their sound, not this loud, in-your-face stuff 💭. don't get me wrong, there are some great tracks on this album, but its like they're playing to different crowds now 🎸. fans who've been with them since the beginning might be lost in all these new sounds 🔥. can we just enjoy it for what it is?

omg u gotta love when bands try 2 reinvent themselves lol i mean i get it, change can b scary, but sometimes u just gotta shake things up 🤣 so yeah, Yumi Zouma's new direction is def interesting, but idk if their fans are gonna be stoked about it...i mean, who doesn't love a good dream-pop vibe? 🌙 still, i'm hyped to see how they roll out the rest of the album, and if those 2 songs u mentioned r any indication of things 2 come... Waiting for the Cards 2 Fall is already giving me all the feels 😭 anyway, growth is key, right? gotta take the good with the bad...or in this case, the loud w/ the soft 🎸

Wow 🤯 this new direction from Yumi Zouma is like a major vibe shift, I'm curious to see if they can pull off this "extreme everything" thing and still keep it dreamy 💫
