Last year, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced a sweeping overhaul of the country’s training aircraft fleet following a series of high-profile accidents involving such planes. These crashes have claimed dozens of lives in recent years, and the latest incident in Kanpur, where two pilots were killed after their Tecnam P2006T aircraft crashed near the Ganges River, raises fresh questions about India’s approach to aviation safety.
Aviation experts point out that training aircraft are often older models retrofitted with modern avionics and engines. This can be a recipe for disaster, as seen in the crash involving the Garg Aviation plane, which was reportedly brought to the facility in 2023 but had unclear maintenance records since then.
India’s reliance on foreign-made planes is another striking aspect of its training aircraft safety record. The majority of these aircraft are sourced from Italy and other European countries, making them difficult to maintain and repair locally. This lack of indigenous manufacturing capacity has significant implications for aviation safety in a country with limited resources.
The DGCA is responsible for ensuring that all commercial and private airlines adhere to strict safety standards, but its authority over training centers appears to be more tenuous. As one expert noted, “the DGCA needs to do a better job of policing these facilities and holding them accountable for any lapses in safety procedures.”
India’s aviation sector is not immune to the same safety concerns plaguing other countries. The country has some of the fastest-growing air travel markets globally, with major airlines like IndiGo and SpiceJet expanding their fleets at breakneck speed. However, this growth comes at a cost: lax safety standards and inadequate maintenance procedures can compromise passenger safety.
A 2020 investigation into an IndiGo crash in Bengaluru found that one of the engines had been improperly maintained by the airline’s own technicians. This incident highlights the need for India to address its training aircraft safety record head-on.
To do so, the government must take concrete steps to overhaul its training aircraft fleet with modern, domestically manufactured planes and provide more resources to regulatory bodies like the DGCA. Until then, incidents like the Kanpur crash will continue to serve as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking beneath India’s gleaming aviation ambitions: complacency, corruption, and an acute shortage of indigenous expertise in this field.
