The parched farmlands of Ladakh have finally received a lifeline, courtesy of Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena’s initiative to tap into 90 million litres of glacial water. This is a testament to the power of community engagement and adaptive governance in one of India’s most arid regions.
Mirza Hussain, the traditional village head of Chuchot, sought Saxena’s intervention to address the acute water shortage plaguing his village. His appeal was not just a desperate cry for help but also an indictment of the system that had failed to recognize the potential of glacier-melt water. The LG responded swiftly and decisively by spearheading a campaign to identify locations where large volumes of glacial water were being wasted, only to drain into the Indus River while surrounding farmlands remained dry.
The Stok village nallah, fed by the Stok Kangri Glacier, emerged as the first site for this innovative project. By using simple earthwork and channelising the glacier-melt into the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal, over 1,000 acres of land across 12 villages are now receiving a much-needed water supply.
Ladakh has been plagued by severe droughts in recent years, with devastating consequences for the local economy and ecosystem. The region’s unique geography makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change, with rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns threatening the very survival of its fragile agricultural sector.
