The synchronized bombing runs over Kyiv, resuming after a brief pause to accommodate US peace envoys, demonstrate that Vladimir Putin has little interest in negotiating an end to Russia’s 4.5-year-old war in Ukraine. The attacks not only kill civilians and cripple infrastructure but also shred the fragile fabric of international diplomacy.

The Kremlin insists on maintaining a façade of diplomatic engagement while its actions suggest otherwise. As soon as Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff departed Kyiv, Putin unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles that left at least two people dead and 10 injured. This sequence of events highlights the disconnect between Russia’s stated commitment to peace talks and its actual military strategy.

The recent uptick in air attacks on Ukraine’s capital and surrounding regions has been characterized by increased use of faster, jet-propelled drones. These precision-guided missiles have proven particularly effective at targeting residents and disrupting daily activities. Putin’s willingness to sacrifice innocent lives for the sake of projecting power and intimidating his opponents is underscored by this escalation.

The involvement of US peace envoys serves as a poignant example of how diplomatic efforts are undermined by Russia’s aggression. The visit was meant to facilitate negotiations, but it ultimately emboldened Putin to resume his aerial campaigns.
