The Scalding Truth: What’s Brewing Behind the Oesophageal Cancer Link
Research from Oxford University suggests that regularly drinking very hot tea or coffee may increase the risk of oesophageal cancer. This finding shouldn’t be surprising, given what we know about the effects of scorching hot liquids on the body.
The study defines “very hot” as drinks at 65 degrees Celsius or above, which poses a potential risk to consumers. The researchers found that people who had six or more hot drinks per day were three times more likely to develop oesophageal cancer than those who drank their tea or coffee at a warmer temperature.
Hot liquids can damage the cell lining of the food pipe through basic physical processes: hot water can denature proteins, disrupt cellular structures, and even cause burns. The ideal temperature for coffee is between 49 and 60 degrees Celsius, yet many of us are still being served – or serving ourselves – drinks that are far hotter.
The coffee culture we’ve created often prioritizes convenience over caution and speed over sensibility. We know that adding milk can cool down drinks slightly, but do we wait long enough for them to reach a safe temperature? Or do we take a sip and hope for the best?
According to the study, around one or two in every 10 oesophageal cancers could be avoided if people stopped drinking very hot beverages. Oesophageal cancer is rare, but its symptoms are often subtle and can be mistaken for other conditions.
We have a problem on our hands: we’ve been conditioned to accept hot drinks as normal, even when they’re scalding. It’s time to rethink our relationship with temperature and consumption. We need to educate ourselves about the risks associated with very hot beverages and make simple changes in our daily habits – like waiting a few minutes before drinking our coffee or tea.
More research is needed to identify the exact drink temperatures linked to this increased risk, but what’s obvious is that scalding hot liquids can harm us. What we do need, however, is a cultural shift that prioritizes caution over convenience and health over habit.
