The Shadow Economy of Personal Data The recent settlement between Grindr and its British users over the sharing of sensitive personal information is a symptom of a far larger problem: our collective surrender to the exploitation of our digital profiles.

Tech companies have amassed vast repositories of intimate data, including dating habits and location history, and sold it off to advertisers without informing us. We're not naive about this; we know what's happening.

But in our rush to simplify our lives with every new app and service, we've become complicit in our own datafication.
