2 men die after being trapped in flooded basements during Thursday’s storm

Floodwaters Turn Deadly in Brooklyn, Manhattan as Two Men Succumb to Traps

Two lives were lost yesterday evening when two men became trapped in flooded basements during a torrential downpour that swept through the city. The victims, identified as 39-year-old and 43-year-old, perished after being submerged underwater for an extended period.

The 39-year-old's body was recovered by FDNY divers who responded to a distress call at a basement location in Brooklyn. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Kings County Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

Meanwhile, the 43-year-old man found himself trapped inside a flooded boiler room at a Manhattan address. Unconscious and unresponsive when discovered, emergency responders were unable to revive him, and he passed away on the scene.

The tragic incidents come as authorities warn that basement dwellers are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of flash flooding. Heavy rain pouring down in short intervals overwhelmed the sewer system, causing water to rise rapidly and flood homes across the city.

"We're looking at a storm cell that largely fell within a 10-minute period, which just overwhelmed our sewer system," Mayor Eric Adams stated. The mayor attributed the severity of the flooding to fall foliage clogging street drains and exacerbating the problem.

As officials continue their investigation into these devastating incidents, residents are left grappling with the reality of living in areas prone to sudden and deadly flooding.

🌪️ I'm still trying to process how fast those waters rose and trapped people like that... it's a nightmare come true 🤕. The thing is, we knew this was coming, we've been talking about it for ages - our sewer system just can't keep up with all the rain we're getting these days ⛈️. I feel so bad for those two families who lost loved ones to tragic circumstances like this 😔. It's just another reminder that our city needs better infrastructure and emergency preparedness measures 🚧. We need to do better, you know? 💔

🤕 this is getting worse by the year... poor guys trapped underwater, it's just not fair 😔. gotta be careful out there, especially when basements flood. FDNY divers risking their lives for those victims... 🙏. mayor's pointing fingers at foliage, but we all know it's a complex problem. rain coming down in short bursts, sewer system can't keep up... 🌨️. and what about the ones who live in these areas? they're already vulnerable, now they gotta deal with floodwaters turning deadly 💔. need to improve infrastructure, alert systems... this is just getting out of hand 🚨.

😱 can't believe what's happening to our city, two guys trapped by floodwaters and now they're gone... so sad for their families 🤕. It's like we're always talking about how unpredictable the weather is here but you never think it'll happen to your neighbor or friend. We gotta do more to educate people about basement safety, especially with all this rain coming down 🌨️. And what's up with the foliage clogging our drains? It's like we're playing a game of "guess who will get flooded next" 🤯. I'm just glad no one else was hurt, but the thought of those two guys struggling to breathe underwater is giving me nightmares 😩. We need better systems in place, pronto! 💦

Man... this is just heartbreaking 🤕. I'm living in NYC, you know how crazy our weather can get? But still, two lives lost to something that's basically just water 😩. And it's not just the water itself, but all these guys were doing what they had to do to survive. I mean, basement dwellers, right? They're already stuck underground most of the time... and now they gotta deal with this? 🤯

And you know what really gets me? These weren't even some random people, it's Brooklyn and Manhattan we're talking about! Two of our own communities getting hammered by a storm that's basically just Mother Nature being super unpredictable. I'm all for the mayor saying stuff like "we need to fix our drains" but c'mon, Eric... that's not gonna cut it when you've got people trapped in water 🚧.

I swear, this is what keeps me up at night thinking about how we gotta take care of each other, especially during these kinds of moments. We can't just sit around and wait for the next storm to hit... we need some real change, you know? 💡

Man... can't believe two lives lost like that 🤕 Floods are getting so crazy and unpredictable these days. The fact that basement dwellers are extra vulnerable is just wild - I mean, we all know it's not ideal to live down there but come on! And the city's infrastructure is already kinda outdated, so what did they expect? Heavy rain in 10 minutes? It's like the sewer system was begging for a major meltdown 🌂. I'm glad the fire department and emergency responders are on top of their game, but at the end of the day, it's just another harsh reminder that our city can be really unforgiving during extreme weather conditions 💔.

🚨 Another crazy stormy night in NYC! I mean, I get it, flash floods can be super unpredictable, but come on, can't we have some decent waterproofing systems in place? 🤔 These basement traps are basically deathtraps waiting to happen. And what's with the whole "fall foliage clogging street drains" thing? Isn't that like, basic maintenance stuff? 😒 It's just more people dying because of human error or neglect. I'm all for keeping our city green and beautiful, but not at the cost of lives! 🌿💔

Ugh, this is just so sad 🤕... two lives lost in one day because of something that's basically impossible to control - the weather. I mean, I get it, the city isn't prepared enough, but do we really need a mayor to tell us that fall foliage clogging drains is the culprit? It feels like we're just getting blamed for natural disasters instead of taking proactive steps to prevent them.

And what's with all these basement dwellers out there who are just so vulnerable to flooding? I get it, not everyone can afford to move, but shouldn't we be doing more to help them out? The city could do some better here, you know? But at the same time, I'm just worried about how many more lives will be lost before we get our act together. It's like... what are we even doing? 🤦‍♂️

I feel so bad for those two families who just lost loved ones 🤕. Floods can be so sneaky and deadly, especially when they hit fast and unexpected like this. It's like, one minute everything is fine, the next you're wading through waist-deep water trying to survive.

And I gotta say, it's crazy that basement dwellers are being warned about flash flooding now? Like, we should have known better already 🤦‍♂️. But at least officials are acknowledging that fall foliage clogging street drains is a big part of the problem. It's not just about infrastructure or bad luck – it's about how our environment affects us.

I'm all for flood safety measures and emergency preparedness, but what about those who can't afford to move out? What about people like me who are just trying to make ends meet and can't afford rent anymore because the city is flooded 🤔. That's not fair at all. We need more than just warnings and caution – we need solutions that help us stay safe and stable in our homes. 💡

omg 2 lives lost in brooklyn & manhattan floods 🤯😱 wat's goin on w/ this storm? it's like, one minute u r walkin down the street, next ur wading thru chest-deep water 🌊🚧 basements r already super sketchy 2 begin w/ - ppl forget dey got a basement, not an underwater bunker lol. mayor's right tho, fall foliage is a MAJOR issue in nyc 🍂💦 we gotta get our sewer system together b4 more people lose their lives 💔

😱🌊 omg two guys died in floods in NYC 🤯 how can a storm turn deadly like that? i know its NY but c'mon people need help! 🚨 the mayor says its fall foliage causing clogs but like isn't there better way to deal with that? 🤔 and what about basement dwellers like those two guys are they really so vulnerable? 💔 shouldn't we have better infrastructure in place to prevent this kinda stuff? 🌉 its just not fair 😔

OMG u no how frustrating this is 🤯 - those poor guys in Brooklyn & Manhattan got trapped & drowned due 2 stupid floodwaters!!! its like, we cant even prepare for dis kind of thing anymore 🌪️ - all that fall foliage clogging drains & then BAM! next thing u know u got ppl stuck underground 💦

& whats with all these basement dwellers? didnt they learn from previous floods? 🤷‍♂️ it dont matter how much rain comes, sewer system can only hold so much water... city should really invest in better flood protection measures ASAP ⏰
