Floodwaters Turn Deadly in Brooklyn, Manhattan as Two Men Succumb to Traps
Two lives were lost yesterday evening when two men became trapped in flooded basements during a torrential downpour that swept through the city. The victims, identified as 39-year-old and 43-year-old, perished after being submerged underwater for an extended period.
The 39-year-old's body was recovered by FDNY divers who responded to a distress call at a basement location in Brooklyn. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Kings County Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
Meanwhile, the 43-year-old man found himself trapped inside a flooded boiler room at a Manhattan address. Unconscious and unresponsive when discovered, emergency responders were unable to revive him, and he passed away on the scene.
The tragic incidents come as authorities warn that basement dwellers are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of flash flooding. Heavy rain pouring down in short intervals overwhelmed the sewer system, causing water to rise rapidly and flood homes across the city.
"We're looking at a storm cell that largely fell within a 10-minute period, which just overwhelmed our sewer system," Mayor Eric Adams stated. The mayor attributed the severity of the flooding to fall foliage clogging street drains and exacerbating the problem.
As officials continue their investigation into these devastating incidents, residents are left grappling with the reality of living in areas prone to sudden and deadly flooding.
