4-year prison term for Minneapolis man who shot at vehicles during separate St. Paul road rage incidents

A Minneapolis man has been handed a four-year prison sentence for firing a gun at motorists in two separate road rage incidents in St. Paul, one of which involved another vehicle with young children inside.

James Allen Ameer Smith, 24, pleaded guilty to two counts of drive-by shooting and was sentenced in Ramsey County District Court on Friday as part of a plea agreement that carried a maximum sentence of 50 months. Four counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon were dropped at the time.

Smith has an open case in Dakota County alleging he waved a gun at another motorist just before his arrest, following a pair of incidents in which drivers fired shots at each other on St. Paul roads.

On October 12th, a driver reported that while traveling on Summit Avenue with two children aged six and nine, their vehicle was struck by a bullet after the driver of a black sedan began tailgating them and then accelerated into oncoming traffic. The driver in the sedan pulled over but then re-entered oncoming lanes, sparking a tense exchange before firing a gun at another passing vehicle, striking it before speeding away.

Just over a month later, a 33-year-old man reported being shot at by another driver on Snelling Avenue and that his car had been damaged by a bullet. He alleged the Nissan's driver began tailgating him, brake-checked them to make space, then pulled alongside, fired a gun and sped off.

Smith was arrested two weeks after the second incident in St Louis Park, where he was wearing an empty gun holster at the time of his arrest. Authorities found spent bullet casings, live ammunition, and a loaded Glock handgun during a search warrant.

When questioned about the incidents, Smith claimed to have no recollection of a road rage incident with the Jeep, saying that if it happened then so be it. However, when informed there were children in the vehicle, he expressed concern for their well-being.

omg i'm just shaking my head thinking about this poor family who almost got hurt by some crazy driver 🀯 like how can someone put themselves and others in such danger? and to think James Allen Ameer Smith is going to serve only 4 years in prison seems soooo unfair considering the severity of his actions...my heart goes out to that little family, esp with those young kids involved πŸ˜πŸš—

I got some major red flags here πŸš¨πŸ’”. This dude's defense is super sketchy. He's got an open case in Dakota County where he allegedly waved a gun at another driver just before his arrest... and now we're finding spent bullet casings, live ammo, and a loaded Glock at the scene of his own arrest? That doesn't add up πŸ€”. And what's with him suddenly expressing concern for the kids involved after being told they were in one of the vehicles that got shot at? It sounds like he's trying to play dumb... or maybe even shift the blame? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ I'm not buying it, you know? This whole thing just feels too convenient. There gotta be more to this story than meets the eye πŸ”

This guy got 4 yrs and that's kinda low considering what he did 🀯 He thought it was cool to just start firing at people on the road? I mean, if he didn't have no recollection of hitting that jeep with kids in it, maybe we should've seen some remorse from him. And now he's got a new case and might get more time... I don't get how plea deals work but this one seems like he got off easy πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The fact that he was wearing an empty holster at the time of his arrest is wild too, it's like he thought he could just get away with it and then just happen to have a gun on him lol πŸ˜‚

OMG, 4 years is way too lenient for someone who's willing to put innocent kids' lives at risk 🀯!! I mean, what kind of monster does that? Smith should've gotten life in prison, no question 😑! He's lucky they dropped those extra charges, he could've gotten 20-30 years easy. And now there's another open case, so we'll have to wait and see if justice gets served 🀞. I'm still shaking my head about the kids being in that vehicle... poor little souls, they should get some compensation for this trauma πŸ’”!

πŸ˜• I cant believe this guy got off easy! He's literally firing guns at people on the road and still managed to get a slap on the wrist? 4 years is NOTHING considering what could've happened if those bullets hit their mark. And what really gets me is when he's asked about the kids in the other car, but then suddenly becomes concerned for them? Like, dude, you're trying to kill people and now you're worried about innocent kids?! It just shows how out of touch some folks are with reality 🀯.

πŸ˜’ This guy's sentence is way too light imo πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I mean 4 years is basically nothing for putting lives at risk πŸ’€. These road rage incidents could've ended so much worse and now people have PTSD from it 😩. The fact that he was driving with no kids in his car when the other incident happened doesn't make him look any less guilty 🚫. And what's up with the empty gun holster? Trying to hide something? πŸ€” The kids were in the Jeep during the other incident, you'd think that would've stuck with him like it did with others #RoadRageIsReal #JusticeForTheVictims #TooLightOfAPunishment

Umm I don't know... I think four years is kinda harsh, you feel? Like, we should all try to calm down when we're driving and stuff, right? But at the same time, like those kids could've been really hurt or killed if that bullet had hit them. I mean, what's the point of even having a plea deal if it's not gonna make sure the person who fired the gun is held accountable for their actions?

And also, why did they drop all those other charges? Like, wasn't he supposed to be super sorry and regretful or something? Instead, he just kinda... shrugs it off when there are kids involved. I guess that's good on him, but at the same time, I don't think it's right. I mean, what if someone else had gotten hurt during those incidents? Would he have been like "Oh no, bad luck!" and then get off scot-free?

And another thing... how can we even be sure he was the only one involved in all this road rage stuff? Like, maybe there were other people around who didn't report it or something. Ugh, I don't know, man...

πŸ˜‘πŸš— what is wrong with people these days?!?! driving around wavin' guns and firin' at other cars like they're playin' a game of "dodge 'em"!! 🀯 first it's one guy, now we got another dude who thought it was okay to just speed off after fire-in' at someone's car! 🚨 what if he had hit that family with the two kids?!?! would anyone care? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And then you gotta deal w/ some dude who claims no recollection of one of these incidents, but when you tell him there were KIDS in the other vehicle, suddenly he's all "concerned"?!?! πŸ˜’ it don't add up, man! if he was really that concerned, why didn't he take responsibility for his actions from the start?!

And four years in prison? πŸ€” that's not even enough time to think about what you've done. these guys need to be locked down and taken away from society before they hurt someone. 😩

😩 Man, this is just wild... Can't even walk down the street without some knucklehead like James Allen Ameer Smith thinkin' they can play hero with a gun. Four years is a pretty light sentence if you ask me. I mean, what's next? Gonna get probation for shootin' at people in their cars with little kids inside?! πŸš—πŸ˜‘ You gotta be outta your mind to do somethin' like that. And then he's got the nerve to claim no memory of it, but suddenly becomes all concerned about those kids being hurt... Come on, dude! You're gonna play dumb, but you're still guilty as charged! πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ The system failed him this time, imo.

omg this guy is literally insane lol like wot was he thinkin firing guns at people on the road??!! i feel 4 the families who got shot or had their cars damaged by him its just so sad that ppl gotta go thru that cuz of some jerk's temper issues. and his defense "if it happened then so be it"????? thats not a thing fam u cant just downplay ur crimes like dat. he should be lucky 2 get 4 yrs prison time considering how reckless he was. i hope the kids r ok tho

πŸ˜’ this whole thing is wild... like how can someone even think its cool to fire a gun at other people on the road? i mean yeah thats just reckless and stupid. four years is kinda light if u ask me tho... like what did he expect to happen after firing a gun at random ppl? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ doesnt seem like he got his priorities straight.
