80-year-old invited homeless neighbor into his home, then was fatally stabbed, DA says

Local Man's Kindness Turns Deadly After Accused Killer Stabs Him with Family Member's Own Knife.

In a shocking turn of events, 80-year-old Lev Vayner was found fatally stabbed in his Washington Heights apartment. Prosecutors claim the killer, 45-year-old Alon Riabichev, had been living in the same building, kicked out by his own mother after she deemed him unwelcome. Despite having no place to go himself, Riabichev took advantage of Vayner's kindness and hospitality.

Vayner, who was battling health problems, allowed Riabichev to stay with him temporarily, providing him with a bed to sleep in and access to the shower. But this act of generosity would ultimately prove fatal. According to authorities, Riabichev had recently purchased an 8-inch knife from a nearby store just hours before the attack.

The brutality of the crime was underscored by the fact that Riabichev called 911 after the fact, claiming he had suffered a psychotic break and had killed Vayner earlier that morning. When responding officers arrived, they found Riabichev sitting on Vayner's bed in the living room, while Vayner lay dying on the floor with multiple stab wounds to his torso and neck.

The only object of interest left behind at the scene was an 8-inch knife, which had been covered in blood. "Mr. Riabichev allegedly took advantage of Mr. Vayner's hospitality in the most brutal way," said Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg. The district attorney added that the murder was "beyond devastating" and that his thoughts were with Vayner's loved ones as they mourned his loss.

Riabichev has been indicted on a count of second-degree murder, facing serious charges for this heinous crime.

man... can u believe what just happened? 80 yrs old guy living in poverty, offering kindness to someone who literally had nowhere else to go, and gets stabbed to death with his own knife 🤯🔪. its so sickening how people take advantage of others generosity like that. riabichev should be behind bars for life, no way he deserves a second chance. and what's with him calling 911 after the fact? trying to spin it as some kind of mental breakdown? please, we all know the truth 🙄. anyway, my heart goes out to vayner's loved ones, this is just devastating 💔

😱🤯 Can you even believe what happened to Lev Vayner? I mean, the guy was just trying to be kind and generous to someone in need, and look what happens... it's just horrific. 🤕 I'm really sorry to hear that Alon Riabichev took advantage of his hospitality like that. It's so sad that he had nowhere else to go and ended up hurting someone who didn't even know him well enough to be wary. 😔 The 8-inch knife is still haunting me, lol... what a creepy detail 🤪. Anyway, my thoughts are with Lev's loved ones during this tough time 💔. RIP, Mr Vayner 👑

Man, 80 y/o Lev Vayner was just trying to be kind & help out someone in need... 🤕 Can't even begin to imagine how hurtin' it must be for his family & friends 😔 Riabichev's gonna regret the day he took advantage of that good Samaritan's hospitality... 💀 And now Alon's got a lifetime sentence comin' his way, which is just about right 👮‍♂️

man... this is just so heartbreaking 🤕 what kind of world do we live in where someone can take advantage of another person's kindness and turn it into such senseless violence? Lev Vayner was just trying to help someone in need, providing him with a place to stay and a roof over his head... and that's exactly what led to his own untimely death 💔

and the fact that Riabichev bought that knife hours before the attack is just mind-blowing 🤯 it's like he had no intention of ever using it for anything good. and then he has the nerve to call 911 and claim he had a psychotic break? give me a break 😒 this isn't a joke anymore, people... let's start taking responsibility for our actions.

ugh i cant even right now thinking about levs situation it sounds like he was just trying to help out someone in need but i guess you never know what people can do when they're desperate...i mean alon riaabichev seemed super grateful at first but now we know that was all a lie. i feel bad for lev's family too, they must be going through so much pain right now 😔. and honestly, why did alon even buy an 8-inch knife just hours before the attack? that just screams red flag to me 🚨. anyway, im glad justice will be served but ugh, this whole thing is just so tragic...
