A Computer Science Professor Invented the Emoticon After a Joke Went Wrong

omg u can believe how the emoticon came 2 b 🤯! so like scott fahlman isn't even credited w/ inventing it but he's still a hero cuz he figgered out the right way to use them 👍 his convo w/ ppl about using :) & :-( actually helped make them more popular 😊 and btw did u no there was a bunch of other ppl tryin 2 solve the "flame wars" prob too 🤔 like neil swartz and anthony stentz were already suggestin' solutions before fahlman came along 🙌 anyway it's def dope 2 think about how somethin so simple can have such a cool backstory 💡

omg u no this story bout how the emoticon was made lol! so like scott fahlman is a computer science prof @ carnegie mellon uni n 1982 & hes tryin to solve the prob of ppl misinterpretin jokes on the bboard 🤔. meanwhile, neil swartz comes up wit the star (*) idear but its not gettin much traction. then other ppl like joseph ginder & anthony stentz chime in w/ thir own suggestions. it gets pretty messy! 🤯 eventually fahlman steers the convo towards facelike symbols 😊🙄 n creates this simple binary system that works like a charm 💻. its actually pretty cool how he just pieced together what others were sayin & created somethin new 💡

lol what a weird history 🤣 so apparently it wasn't just scott fahlman who came up with emoticons 😏 his idea was more like a mashup of other people's suggestions 🤔 like howard gayle's "warning" message that turned out to be a joke and neil swartz's idea of using a star (*) which some people liked but others thought was lame 🤷‍♂️ fahlman just kinda combined all the good stuff from the discussions and voila, emoticons were born 💡

I remember when we first started using those :) and :( things on AOL chat rooms 😂. It was like, a big deal or something! But now I'm reading this article about how the emoticon was created by some dude Scott Fahlman back in '82 🤯. And it's crazy to think that it wasn't just him who came up with it - there were all these other people throwing around different ideas for like, hours and stuff ⏰.

I mean, can you believe that some people actually thought the "WARNING!" message was real? 😱 Like, I get it, miscommunications happen online but wow. Anyway, Fahlman just kind of... merged everyone's ideas into this thing that worked, you know? And then BAM! Suddenly emoticons are everywhere 🎉.

It's pretty cool to see how far back the origins of the emoticon go. I guess you could say it's a bit like our Facebook status updates from the early days - we thought we were being so original and stuff 😜. But hey, at least Fahlman got credit for making it all work in the end 👏.
