A Florida official wants to cancel a sold-out Christmas drag show. The queens are performing anyway

Florida Officials Fail to Silence Drag Queens as Christmas Show Proceeds Despite Ongoing Backlash.

The annual A Drag Queen Christmas tour has become a holiday tradition in Florida despite being met with intense backlash from state officials and conservative groups who claim the show is anti-Christian. However, performers from RuPaul's Drag Race are set to continue their tours, including a sold-out performance in Pensacola.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier had nearly two months of lobbying efforts to cancel the Christmas drag show but ultimately failed. The 1,600-capacity tour stop in Pensacola is now sold out, and the performers have announced they will proceed with their performances despite the ongoing backlash.

Local leaders in Pensacola stated that if they canceled the event it could result in costly litigation from the production company behind the tour. "We can't thank Pensacola enough for showing out and showing up," said Nina West, tour host of A Drag Queen Christmas.

Florida drag performers have faced intense attacks on their art form and identity over the past few years. In 2022, Proud Boys held a rally outside one stop of the tour in Clearwater while in another year the DeSantis administration investigated some venues hosting the event under Florida's "lewdness" laws.

A recent surge of anti-drag bills across the US has fueled concerns that drag performers are being targeted. Despite this pushback, local organizers emphasize that the events will proceed as normal with no changes to their schedule or content.

Florida is a major hub for modern drag culture and five out of the 14 queens competing on RuPaul's Drag Race upcoming season hail from Florida itself. The majority of the people interviewed in the state emphasized that it is not fair to represent all Floridians based solely on what certain elected officials have said.

Drag events are also important gatherings for young people, who can learn and grow through art and creativity. According to Jewel Sparkles, a drag performer competing on RuPaul's Drag Race season 17, seeing the show as a teenager helped her navigate her identity. For some performers like Yacht and others attending drag events have served as vital sources of community support.

Critics attempting to silence the performances have failed to deter fans from attending shows that often take place in hostile environments. In response to the pushback, a national coalition for drag artists has urged fans to show their support by attending more drag performances.

As organizers and performers assert their presence in Pensacola and beyond, drag queens are refusing to be silenced despite intense pressures to back down.

πŸ€” I'm not surprised that the A Drag Queen Christmas tour is still going strong despite all the backlash. It's just proof that people will keep showing up to support the arts and performers who bring a little bit of joy and creativity into their lives. πŸŽ‰ The fact that local leaders are saying they can't afford to cancel the event due to potential lawsuits is kinda ridiculous, if you ask me. πŸ’Έ Shouldn't we be focusing on supporting the artists rather than trying to silence them? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's not like these performers are hurting anyone with their performances...they're just having fun and spreading love and acceptance. ❀️

omg u guys can't even handle some fun drag shows 🀣 i mean come on florida is a state with like tons of beaches and theme parks but u're worried about some drag queens performing at christmas lol what's next gonna cancel halloween or easter egg hunts too? πŸ˜‚ seriously though it's just art and self expression, ppl gotta learn to chill out. btw those cons reps from desantis admin r lowkey hilarious πŸ™„

I dont think these Florida officials were ever going to cancel the Christmas drag show πŸ€”. I mean, its a sold-out event with 1,600 people attending, thats some serious support from fans. And honestly, who can silence a whole city of people just because some elected officials have an issue with it? Not fair to represent all Floridians with what certain politicians are saying about drag culture 🚫. I also think its interesting that the performers themselves are saying they wont be silenced, thats more power to them! πŸ’ͺ Maybe this is exactly what these queens need - a big stage and a crowd of people cheering them on.

idk why ppl r making such a big deal out of this christmas drag show πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ its just art and ppl should be able to enjoy it without being judged or attacked. cant the critics just chill for once? & whats with all these anti-drag bills passing across the US? like, what's next? banning music festivals too? πŸŽ΅πŸ‘€

OMG, yaaas 🀩 I'm so proud of the queens for not letting all that negativity bring them down! πŸ’– They're still slaying it on stage and entertaining us with their awesomeness. It's like, can't we just focus on spreading love and acceptance instead of trying to shut down something that brings joy to so many people? 🌈 I mean, Florida is literally the drag capital right now, and those queens are repping their state with pride. πŸ’ͺ And honestly, it's about time we started seeing more diversity on RuPaul's Drag Race - five out of 14 queens this season are from Florida, and that's amazing to see! 🀩 The fact that locals in Pensacola are standing up for the event and not letting the haters bring them down is truly inspiring. πŸ’– Keep on performing, queens! You're not alone, and we've got your backs! πŸ‘―

OMG u guys I'm low-key obsessed with these drag queens 🀩 they're literally killing the game! I mean Florida officials think they can just shut them down but NOPE 🚫 these queens are all about spreading love and acceptance, not hate or negativity πŸ’– and honestly who cares if some ppl don't get it? art is for everyone 🌈 and drag culture is a huge part of that. I'm so proud of Nina West and the rest of the performers for standing strong despite all the pushback they've received πŸ™. And can we talk about how important these shows are for young people learning to love themselves? πŸ’• it's all about self-expression and creativity, and drag events are a major part of that. I'm so here for this! πŸŽ‰

I don't usually comment but I think it's kinda sad that some people can't just chill out about the Christmas drag show πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Like, what's wrong with a little festive fun? It's not hurting anyone. And all this fuss is just gonna make the event even more popular and attract even more people πŸŽ‰. It's like, can't we just focus on spreading some holiday cheer instead of trying to stifle someone else's creativity πŸ’–. I mean, drag culture is a big part of who Florida is now, so it's only fair that everyone gets to enjoy the shows without any drama πŸ’ͺ.

idk why ppl r makin such a big deal outta this lol πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. florida drag culture is all about self expression n stuff & the gov just needs 2 chill. its not like they're promoting or anything harmful, they're just entertainin' people πŸŽ‰. i mean sure u got some ppl who are against it but thats what makes life interesting right? freedom of speech/ expression is a big deal n u cant just silence ppl cuz some ppl dont agree w/ them πŸ€—. its actually kinda cool that 5 queens from florida made it to the upcoming season of ru pauls drag race, more power 2 local artists πŸ’ͺ

🌟 The fact that drag queens aren't letting the haters bring them down is literally a breath of fresh air πŸ’¨ I mean, can you imagine if everyone just stopped doing what they love because some people are mad about it? It's like when you're walking down the street and someone tries to tell you what you can or can't do because of your style 🀣 They need to chill out. Drag is all about self-expression and having fun, and that's something we should all be supporting πŸ’– The fact that these queens are still going strong despite all the pushback just shows how strong their passion and community are πŸ’ͺ

I'm tellin' ya, this whole thing is just soooo ridiculous 🀣! I mean, come on, a Christmas show with drag queens? It's all about inclusivity and acceptance, right? And people are tryin' to shut it down because of some old-fashioned conservative views πŸ™„. Like, what's next? Canceling Halloween costumes or somethin'?

I remember when I was a kid, we'd have these crazy parties at the local roller rink, and everyone would just let loose and have fun. Now, it seems like you gotta be so careful not to offend anyone... I'm all for respect and empathy, but c'mon! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I've been thinkin', maybe we should just take a step back and appreciate the weirdos (in a good way, obvi) who make life interesting. Like, these drag queens are killin' it on that stage, and they're bringin' people together in a way that's pure joy πŸ’–. So, let's keep shinin' our lights and makin' some noise, and not let anyone dull our sparkle ✨!

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation in Florida 🀯. It's crazy that officials were so determined to cancel the Christmas drag show, but ultimately, fans had other plans 😎. I think what's really going on here is a clash between free speech and artistic expression vs. conservative values. As an American, I believe we have the right to express ourselves, even if it doesn't align with everyone else's views 🀝.

It's interesting that local leaders in Pensacola pointed out the potential costs of canceling the event, which made them think twice about taking down the performers πŸ’Έ. And honestly, who can blame them? These events bring a sense of community and joy to young people, many of whom may be struggling with their identities 🌈.

I also want to highlight that these drag queens are not just performing for themselves; they're representing the state of Florida on a national stage πŸ‘‘. It's up to us as a society to show respect for their art form and support them in the face of adversity πŸ’ͺ.

omg u guys this is so wild that florida officials can't even stop a christmas drag show 🀣 i mean we know there's been some backlash but like the people are still showing up in droves and not letting the haters bring them down πŸ’β€β™€οΈπŸ’– what's crazy is how this whole thing is fueling a national movement for drag artists - fans are rallying behind them and refusing to let critics silence them 🀝 it just goes to show that art and creativity can't be controlled by a few people who are trying to push their agendas πŸ’–

πŸ€– I'm really disappointed that the Florida officials were unable to silence the talented drag queens. It's unacceptable how some people try to use fear and intimidation to cancel events they don't agree with. The fact that there was even a rally outside one of the performances in Clearwater is just sad πŸ€•. But it's amazing to see how the community has come together to support these performers and their art form. Drag culture is all about self-expression, acceptance, and love πŸ’–, and we need more of that positivity in our world. The fact that fans are refusing to back down despite the pressure shows that they're strong and confident πŸŽ‰. And I'm glad that local organizers are standing up for what's right and not letting the fear of costly litigation dictate their decisions πŸ‘. Let's keep showing love and support for these incredible performers and the community they represent πŸ’–
