A Thousand Blows season two review – Erin Doherty is so good it's hard to think about anything else

"A Thousand Blows" Season Two Lacks Direction, But Erin Doherty's Star Power Can't Save It

The sophomore season of Steven Knight's late-Victorian thriller "A Thousand Blows" makes a valiant effort to rectify the narrative missteps of its inaugural outing. However, despite a talented ensemble cast, including Erin Doherty as the magnetic Mary Carr, the series suffers from a lack of focus and direction.

The first season's success can be largely attributed to Doherty's impressive turn as the wily pickpocketing queen, who somehow managed to sell her character with such conviction that it became difficult to discern what was genuinely part of the show's premise. The second season seeks to distance itself from this phenomenon by toning down Doherty's presence and letting the story unfold at a more measured pace.

Unfortunately, the action takes on a decidedly depressing tone, which, while not necessarily bad in and of itself, detracts from the overall impact of the series. The narrative is weighed down by its own self-importance, as if it's trying to say something profound about colonialism, racism, and tradition without ever quite managing to.

The plot twists and turns in an attempt to keep pace with the increasingly complex web of characters, but ultimately, much of it feels like a jumbled mess. Hezekiah Moscow's (Stephen Graham) journey from an outcast to a boxing sensation is hindered by his own demons, while Sugar Goodson's (James Nelson-Joyce) descent into despair is both heartbreaking and frustratingly unclear.

Erin Doherty's performance remains a highlight of the series, bringing a depth and nuance to Mary Carr that elevates even the most lackluster moments. Her character's troubled past and psychological turmoil are skillfully woven throughout the narrative, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.

Ultimately, "A Thousand Blows" Season Two feels like a misfire, a show that knows it's better than what we're seeing but can't quite find its footing. Despite Doherty's star power, the series struggles to cohere into something greater than the sum of its parts.

I gotta say, I was really looking forward to Season 2 of "A Thousand Blows", given the hype around Erin Doherty's performance in the first season 🤔. Unfortunately, it feels like they're trying too hard to flesh out the narrative and character arcs, which ends up making it all feel pretty meh 😐. I mean, don't get me wrong, Doherty is still amazing as Mary Carr - she really brings this complex, troubled character to life 💥. But the rest of the show just can't seem to follow suit. The pacing feels slow and plodding at times, and the themes of colonialism and racism are interesting but not necessarily handled in a way that's super impactful or thought-provoking 🤷‍♂️. All in all, I think it's a shame, because with some tighter writing and editing, this show could've really taken off ⚡️!

I'm so here for Erin Doherty's Mary Carr, she's like a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dark show 🌟. But, man, season 2 is just meh... I know they were trying to fix the narrative issues from the first season, but it feels like they took all the best parts and threw 'em into a blender 😩. The tone's all over the place - one minute you're invested in Hezekiah's boxing journey, next minute you're stuck in this depressing spiral with Sugar 🤯. I love Erin's character development, she brings so much depth to Mary Carr, but it's like the rest of the show is just kinda...meh 🤷‍♂️. Can't they just find their direction and make this thing sing?

omg i was SO invested in season 1 and erin doherty as mary carr tho 🤩 she's literally the reason i kept watching lol but season 2 just feels like it's trying too hard, you know? like they're trying to make a statement about colonialism etc but it comes across as super heavy-handed and pretentious. and can we talk about how much i ship hez and mary tho 🥰 stephen graham and erin doherty together are just meant to be 💕 but anyway, yeah season 2 is meh in my opinion

i gotta say, erin doherty is straight fire as mary carr 🤯 but even she can't save this show from its own issues 😔 i mean, i get what steven knight was trying to do with the colonialism and racism stuff, but it just feels like a bunch of heavy-handed themes slapped together without any real impact 🤷‍♀️ and don't even get me started on the plot twists - they're all over the place like someone threw a handful of spaghetti at the wall and hoped some of it stuck 🍝

Idk why ppl still watch this show 🤷‍♂️ its like they got sucked in by erin doherty's awesomeness and then just stuck with it 😒 season 2 is def not better, i think they r tryna be deep w/ the colonialism thing but its just forced and annoying 🙄 and dont even get me started on the plot twists, like what even happened to hezekiah?? 🤯 still love erin's mary carr tho 👀

🤔 I mean, come on... Erin Doherty is literally carrying this whole show and it's still not good enough? 🙄 Like, what even happened to that first season? Was it just a fluke or did they seriously regroup and try new things for the second? 📺 The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that "A Thousand Blows" is one of those shows where everyone knows the writer just isn't feeling it anymore. 😐 It's like they're trying to make a point, but it's getting lost in all the convoluted plotlines and depressing vibes. 🌧️ Don't get me wrong, Erin Doherty is still my girl and Mary Carr is an amazing character, but even she can only take so much of this mess before I'm like "girl, bye". 😂

I think the problem is that they tried to fix everything that was wrong with the first season by toning down Erin Doherty's presence, but then they didn't give her anything to do, you know? 🤔 The character Mary Carr was a highlight of the show because she was just so...present. And now, I feel like we're missing out on something.

I also think the show is trying too hard to be deep and meaningful, which makes it feel kinda forced. Like, I get that they want to tackle some heavy stuff about colonialism and racism, but do we really need every single plot twist to have a giant dramatic reveal about social justice? 🤷‍♂️

And what's up with Hezekiah Moscow's storyline? It feels like it just kinda...stalled. I was rooting for him to overcome his demons, but then nothing happened and I'm left feeling meh. 😐

I gotta say, this season two is just meh 🤔. I loved Erin Doherty as Mary Carr in the first season, but even she can't save this mess from itself. The show's got a lot going on, but it feels like they're trying to tackle too many big themes at once - colonialism, racism, tradition... it's all just kind of muddled together. And don't even get me started on the plot twists 🤯. It's like they threw a bunch of random cards into a deck and hoped something would stick. I'm still rooting for Erin Doherty, though - she's really carrying this show with her performances 💪. But overall, it feels like the writers just lost their way after season one... 😐

I was super hyped for season two of "A Thousand Blows" 🤩 but honestly, it felt like they were trying to cram too much into one season. Erin Doherty is still on fire as Mary Carr 👏 her character's struggles and backstory are so intense and emotional, it's a shame the rest of the show can't match that level of depth.

I loved how they tried to distance themselves from the first season's issues, but instead of finding a new direction, it felt like they got stuck in a rut 🚶‍♀️. The depressing tone kinda dragged on and made me lose interest. And I'm still not sure what the point of all those plot twists is 🤯 some of it works, but other parts feel like they're just tacked on.

I do love Hezekiah Moscow's storyline tho 💪 Stephen Graham brings so much depth to his character, and Sugar Goodson's arc was heartbreaking 😔. But overall, I think the show needs to go back to the drawing board and figure out what it wants to say 📝

I'm kinda with this one... 🤔 The second season trying to distance Erin Doherty from Mary Carr makes sense since her character was a major draw last time around. But at the same time, it feels like they're just scaling back rather than addressing the underlying issues 📊. The show's still got some great moments - that fight scene between Hezekiah and Sugar was intense! 💥

Let's take a look at the ratings: Season One averaged 12 million viewers, while Season Two is currently sitting at around 8 million 📈. Not bad, but not what they were hoping for either. And on IMDB... ⭐️ Season One got 7.5/10, while Season Two is struggling to break 6/10. 🤕

Here's a quick chart comparing the two seasons' viewer demographics: 👉

**Season One**

* 55% female
* 40% aged 18-34
* 30% from the UK
* Average watch time: 45 minutes ⏰

**Season Two**

* 50% female
* 35% aged 18-34
* 25% from the US 🌎
* Average watch time: 42 minutes ⏰

As you can see, Season One had a slightly higher engagement rate, but overall I think the lack of direction is really affecting it 📊.

I'm so done with these "thick" period dramas 🙄. Can't they just stick to a normal storyline without all the unnecessary colonialism and racism vibes? I mean, I get it's supposed to be some deep commentary, but honestly, it feels like they're just trying too hard. And Erin Doherty's character is literally the only one who knows what she's doing 🤩. The rest of the cast is just mugging around like a bunch of extras on Game of Thrones.

I gotta say, Erin Doherty is def making some amazing waves in this show 🌊 Even with all the plot holes and whatnot, she still manages to bring that Mary Carr character to life in a way that's just captivating 💥 But at the same time, I'm like, yeah, the rest of the show needs to step up its game 🤔 Can't let Erin carry it all on her own, you know? It feels like they're trying too hard to tackle some big themes and it's just not landing 🤷‍♀️ Maybe with another season or two, they'll get the hang of it?

🤔 I'm kinda with this article, but not entirely. I think the show tries too hard to tackle heavy themes and it shows in its execution. I mean, who needs another colonialism/ racism critique on Netflix? 🙄 But at the same time, Erin Doherty's performance is literally the highlight of the season for me. She brings so much depth and emotion to Mary Carr that it feels like she's carrying the whole show on her shoulders. Maybe they should've just focused more on her character development instead of trying to tie every other plotline together? 🤷‍♀️ The show has potential, but it needs to find its tone and stick to it. Fingers crossed for Season 3! 😅

I'm so over this season 2 🙄... I mean, I love Erin Doherty as Mary Carr, she's got this whole "tough girl" vibe going on 💁‍♀️, but even her awesomeness can't save the show from being all over the place 🤯. It's like they're trying to cram too many stories and themes into one season, and it just gets confusing 📚. And don't even get me started on the depressing tone... I mean, I'm no expert but even I know that a show should be able to balance light and dark without making the whole thing feel like a slog ⛈️. Still, Doherty's performance is top-notch, she brings so much depth to Mary Carr 🌟, maybe they should've just stuck with what worked in season 1 instead of trying to reinvent the wheel 🔄. Oh well, I guess it's back to waiting for season 3... 🤞
