A Thousand Blows season two review – Erin Doherty is so good it's hard to think about anything else

Erin Doherty's Dominance Hides the Weaknesses in 'A Thousand Blows' Season 2

The second season of Steven Knight's 'A Thousand Blows' is a cautionary tale about how even the most talented actors can be overwhelmed by a weak script. Erin Doherty, who shines as the wily and tough-as-boots pickpocketing queen Mary Carr, is back to her old tricks in this outing, but the show itself struggles to keep up.

While season one had its issues with heavy-handed exposition, season two tackles more mature themes such as colonialism, racism, and class. The introduction of a real-life crime syndicate, the Forty Elephants, adds a layer of novelty that elevates the series. However, the tone is now more depressing than punchy, which may deter some viewers.

Doherty's co-star, Stephen Graham, fares better as the troubled boxer Henry "Sugar" Goodson, whose downward spiral is both heartbreaking and infuriating. Malachi Kirby shines as the charismatic Jamaican fighter who disrupts Sugar's world. The rivalry between Sugar and his brother Treacle adds a compelling layer of family dynamics.

The real star of the show, however, remains Mary Carr, played by Erin Doherty. Her portrayal is magnetic, and her character's complexities are expertly woven throughout the narrative. Doherty's talent is evident in her nuanced performance, but it's also clear that she can carry a weak script on her back.

The season's narrative backbone revolves around Mary's planned heist of a Caravaggio, which brings together her disbanded band of lady thieves. Hezekiah's comeback takes longer to materialize, and even then, his journey is marked by self-doubt and insecurity. The show's action scenes are plentiful, but the stakes seem low, making it difficult to become invested in the characters' fates.

Ultimately, 'A Thousand Blows' Season 2 feels like a missed opportunity. With Doherty's phenomenal performance at its center, the show could have explored deeper themes and emotions. Instead, the narrative is muddled, and the characters are left to carry the weight of their own personal demons. While fans of season one will likely find some enjoyment in this outing, new viewers may struggle to get invested in the series.

I gotta say, I was really hyped for season 2 of 'A Thousand Blows' 🤩 but it kinda fell flat for me. Erin Doherty is still on fire as Mary Carr tho 💥 her character's complexity is so interesting to watch and she carries the show with ease, even when the writing isn't that strong. The addition of the Forty Elephants crime syndicate was a cool twist! 👊 but overall, I think the tone got a bit too depressing and it's hard to get invested in the characters when they're just kinda stuck in their own personal struggles. The action scenes were sick tho 🎯 and Stephen Graham's performance as Sugar was amazing... I wish the script had given him more to work with, though! 🤔

idk why they didn't develop hezekiah's character more 🤔... like u said his comeback was all over the place and it felt like it took forever to happen. and i felt like treacle's presence was kinda wasted, too 😐. doherty's mary carr is def the highlight of this season, but sometimes u just wish she'd have a better supporting cast, ya know? 🤷‍♀️

lol what's up with 'A Thousand Blows' Season 2? i mean erin doherty is still amazing as mary carr but like the whole show feels kinda meh 😐 it's like they're trying to tackle some heavy themes but end up being too depressing instead of punchy 🤔 also stephen graham and malachi kirby are like woah as sugar goodson and treacle but they can't carry the whole show on their backs 🤪 what's up with hezekiah's come back tho? feels like it's just an afterthought 🙄

🤔 u know whats wild? Erin Doherty's Mary Carr is literally the only reason i'm still watching a show thats got some major plot holes 🤦‍♀️. like, i love how complex she is and how her character is woven throughout the season but cmon, can we pls get some better writing on top of that talent? 😩 the rest of the cast is great too btw, Stephen Graham's Henry "Sugar" Goodson is so heartbreaking 🤕. and omg, the rivalry between Sugar and his bro Treacle is literally the best thing since sliced bread 🍞

🤔 the show would've been way better if they fleshed out the script a bit more 📝 here's a quick diagram to illustrate my point:
```
+---------------+
| Mary Carr |
+---------------+
|
| *weak script*
v
+---------------+ +---------------+
| Heist Plot | | Personal Demons|
+---------------+ +---------------+
|
| *more depth needed*
v
+---------------+ +---------------+
| Character Backstory| | Themes and Emotions|
+---------------+ +---------------+
```
anyway, i think erin doherty's talent is for sure the main highlight of this season 🌟 but the rest of the show needs some serious work 💪

idk how erin doherty can make such a weak script look good 🤔 her performance is on point, but it's like she's carrying the entire show on her back... which isn't a bad thing, but still 🙄 what would've happened if the writers actually put some thought into the story? 🤷‍♂️ season 2 feels like just another episode of mary carr's adventures, instead of something more substantial 📺 i mean, i get that it's not supposed to be all sunshine and rainbows, but can't they at least try to tackle some real issues? 🤔

I gotta say, Erin Doherty is on fire 🔥! She's like a breath of fresh air as Mary Carr, but I'm still waiting for the rest of the show to catch up with her level of talent 🤔. The colonialism and racism themes are super important, but they feel kinda heavy-handed at times. And don't even get me started on the script – it's like they're trying to cram too many ideas into one season 📚. Still, Doherty shines so bright that she makes up for some of the show's shortcomings 💫. If they'd just figured out how to balance the tone and the plot, this could've been something special 🤞.

I'm watching this show 'A Thousand Blows' and I gotta say, Erin Doherty's Mary Carr is just so captivating 🤩. But, I mean, the rest of the show feels kinda... flat? Like season one was already a bit of a struggle for me, remember when TV shows used to have more character development back in the day? And now it's like they're trying too hard to be all deep and stuff? The 90s were way better, in my opinion 📺. I mean, have you seen 'Peaky Blinders'? Now that was a show that knew how to bring the drama 💥. But anyway, back to 'A Thousand Blows', I do love Erin Doherty's performance, even if it is like trying to lasso a wild mustang 🐴.

Ugh, another overhyped show that's just riding on Erin Doherty's talent alone 🤔. I mean, don't get me wrong, she's amazing as Mary Carr, but even her charisma can't save this mess from a weak script. It's like they took all the cool ideas from season one and replaced them with more boring, serious stuff. The colonialism and racism themes are just so heavy-handed and predictable...can't they just tackle it in a more nuanced way? 🙄 And what's up with the action scenes? They're just a bunch of flashy set pieces that don't really add anything to the story. I'm still not invested in these characters' fates, despite Doherty's best efforts 🤷‍♀️

I'm loving Erin Doherty's portrayal of Mary Carr in 'A Thousand Blows' Season 2, but I gotta say, her talent is being wasted on a weak script 🤔💔. She brings so much depth and nuance to the character, it's like she's carrying the whole show on her shoulders 💪. The themes of colonialism, racism, and class are timely and important, but they're not being handled with the care and sensitivity that they deserve 🙏. And don't even get me started on how much I wish Hezekiah's storyline was more fleshed out – it feels like a missed opportunity to explore some really interesting character dynamics 🤦‍♀️. Overall, while Doherty is the real star of this show, I'm still hoping for a stronger narrative backbone in future seasons 😒.

I gotta say, I'm not impressed with 'A Thousand Blows' Season 2 🤔. Erin Doherty is still amazing as Mary Carr, but it's not enough to save a show that's got some major plot holes 💸. The writers are trying too hard to tackle heavy themes like colonialism and racism, but it feels forced and heavy-handed 🚫. And don't even get me started on the action scenes – they're just a bunch of chaos with no real stakes or tension ⚔️. I mean, what's the point of all this drama if we're not invested in the characters' fates? 🤷‍♀️ I guess fans of season one will still be happy to see Erin shine, but for new viewers, it's a tough sell 😐. Overall, feels like they missed an opportunity to make something really special 👎

idk how u can make erin doherty shine that much w/ such a weak script lol she's like the only thing holding this show together 🤷‍♂️ season 2 feels like it's just trying 2 tackle too many issues at once & ends up being all over the place 🤯 maybe if they'd focused more on Mary's character & less on the super generic "tough woman" trope, we would've gotten something real 🤑

I gotta say, Erin Doherty is on fire as Mary Carr! She's got that swag and charm down pat 😎. But, you know, I'm still a bit miffed that the script is kinda lacking. They're trying to tackle some heavy themes like colonialism and racism, but it feels like they're not quite hitting the mark. The show's all over the place, tone-wise - sometimes it's dark and gritty, other times it's just... meh 🤔.

And don't even get me started on the action scenes. I mean, I love a good heist movie as much as the next person, but these scenes are just kinda... there 🙄. They're not doing much to elevate the story or really make you feel like anything's at stake.

But hey, Stephen Graham is still a total pro as Sugar Goodson - that performance is top-notch 💯. And Malachi Kirby is great as the Jamaican fighter who shakes things up. So yeah, I'll still watch season 2 just to see Doherty do her thing again 🤗, but I wish they'd taken some more risks and really made this script shine ✨.

Season 2 of 'A Thousand Blows' is like watching a talented musician play a bunch of sad songs on repeat 🎵😐... they're all over the place and don't really add up to anything meaningful. Erin Doherty's still got skills, but she's basically carrying the whole show on her back like it owes her money 💸. The new themes about colonialism and racism are cool, I guess, but they get lost in a sea of bland exposition 📚. And don't even get me started on how slow Hezekiah's comeback is... that guy's got some serious 'I'm-a-terrible-leader' vibes going on 😒. All in all, it feels like the writers were just phoning it in and hoping Doherty would save the day again 💕

I mean... I was really hyped for season 2 of 'A Thousand Blows' but it kinda fell flat for me 🤔. Erin Doherty is still absolutely captivating as Mary Carr, no doubt about that 💁‍♀️. But honestly, the whole show feels like it's just going through the motions. The script is so weak, I mean, I get what they're trying to do with colonialism and racism, but it's all so heavy-handed and lacking in subtlety 🙄. And don't even get me started on how meh the action scenes are 😴. It's like, I want to see more of Mary's world, you know? But instead we're just stuck in this muddled narrative that's hard to care about 🤷‍♀️. I guess if you liked season one, you'll probably still enjoy it, but for me, it was a disappointment 😔.

I'm like, totally disappointed in 'A Thousand Blows' Season 2 🤕. I mean, Erin Doherty is on fire as Mary Carr, but it's like she's carrying the whole show on her back 😅. The script is all over the place and the story is just meh. It's like they took a bunch of cool ideas and mashed them together without really thinking it through 🤯. And don't even get me started on the action scenes, they're just so... basic 💪. I mean, where's the excitement? The thrill? The drama? 🎥 It's all just kinda meh, you know? 😐

idk why ppl keep sayin erin doherty's performances r flawless 🤷‍♀️ she's def got a knack for playin complex characters, but c'mon, a season w/ so many weak plot points & uninspired action scenes? it feels like the writers r just phoning it in now 😴 and i gotta say, stephen graham is way underrated as sugar goodson 🤝 his character's descent into madness is SO compelling! also, malachi kirby's charm is infectious 👊 what's up w/ the show's tone though? it's like they went from pulpy heist flick to somber drama in 2 sec 🔥
