AFCON: Unbeaten Nigeria collide with tournament favourites Morocco in semi

In a pivotal semi-final showdown at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, Africa's top-ranked nation and 2022 World Cup semifinalists, will collide with the unbeaten Nigeria, who are looking increasingly like the team to beat at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

For Nigeria, this AFCON campaign holds a weighty significance as they seek redemption after missing out on the World Cup. The pressure is palpable for Morocco, the hosts, 50 years after their last continental triumph, and they're determined to rewrite history.

Nigeria's path to the semifinals was relatively straightforward. They topped Group C with an impressive 4-0 win over Mozambique and followed it up with a convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarterfinals. The Super Eagles have reached the semifinals 17 times in the last 20 tournaments they've qualified for, and they're also this edition's top scorers overall, netting 14 goals in five matches.

Morocco, on the other hand, navigated Group A with an unbeaten record, bagging two wins and a draw. They began their knockout campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Tanzania before dispatching Cameroon 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

The Atlas Lions have advanced to the AFCON semifinals for the first time since 2004, and coach Walid Regragui is ecstatic about his team's progress. "It's historic," he said. "Moroccans haven't seen their team in the semifinals of an AFCON for 22 years. They deserve it, but we need to keep our feet on the ground and make it even more historic."

Diaz has been Morocco's standout performer at AFCON 2025, scoring in each of his five appearances, and he leads the tournament's scoring charts with five goals.

For Nigeria, Ademola Lookman has emerged as their most effective player, providing strong competition to Brahim Diaz for the tournament's best player award. Alongside Lookman, Victor Osimhen remains a lethal threat, scoring four goals, including back-to-back strikes in the round of 16 and quarterfinals.

In terms of form guides, Nigeria have won all five matches (W-W-W-W-W), while Morocco have bagged two wins, a draw, and suffered one defeat (W-W-W-D-W).

The head-to-head record between Nigeria and Morocco is relatively evenly split, with six wins for Morocco and four for Nigeria. One match ended in a draw.

The teams last met in February 2018, when Morocco won the Africa Nations Championship final 4-0. Their last AFCON meeting was in January 2004, when Morocco secured a 1-0 win over Nigeria.

Nigeria have won the AFCON title three times, but Morocco's only title came in 1976. This semi-final match will see captain Wilfried Ndidi suspended for Nigeria after collecting his second yellow card of the knockout phase, while Achraf Hakimi returns to full fitness for Morocco.

😊 This Africa Cup of Nations is looking more and more like a two-horse race between Nigeria and Morocco - both teams are on fire! Nigeria's Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen are giving their team a major boost, while Brahim Diaz has been on point for Morocco 🀩. The pressure on Morocco, as the hosts, is immense after 50 years without a continental title... will they be able to rewrite history? πŸ†

I'm loving the form guides - Nigeria's 5-0 win streak is insane! 😲 Meanwhile, Morocco's consistency at the back is giving them a solid platform for success. The head-to-head record between these two teams is really interesting too - so much parity between them. Can't wait to see how it all plays out in the semis πŸŽ‰

😊 Oh man, this is gonna be so intense! I'm feeling the pressure already πŸ˜… Both teams are playing incredible football, and it's gonna be tough to pick a winner. Nigeria's squad looks super strong, with players like Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen on fire πŸ”₯πŸ”΄. And Morocco's got some serious depth too - that Diaz is a nightmare for defenders πŸ’«! It's amazing how far both teams have come since their last AFCON matches πŸ™Œ. The Atlas Lions' historic run has been incredible to watch, and I'm loving the confidence from coach Regragui πŸ™ŒπŸ’ͺ. Can't wait to see who comes out on top in this semi-final showdown πŸ€”!

This is gonna be a intense game 🀯! I mean, both teams are looking super strong right now. Morocco's history is on the line and it's huge pressure for them, but at the same time, Nigeria just wants to make up for missing out on the World Cup last year πŸ’”. They've got some amazing players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman who can just tear teams apart 🀯.

But you know what, I think this game has all the ingredients of a classic match πŸ”₯. Both teams have been playing really well so far, Morocco's got Achraf Hakimi back from injury which is gonna be a massive boost for them, and Nigeria's gotta deal with Wilfried Ndidi being suspended πŸ€•.

It's also interesting to see how this head-to-head matchup plays out. They've had some close matches before, but I think Nigeria's overall form guides are looking pretty strong right now πŸ’ͺ. Still, it's gonna be a real test of their endurance and strategy πŸ”. Bring it on! πŸŽ‰

omg i'm low-key hyped for this afcon matchup 🀩 nigeria's form is insane they've barely lost a single match and Ademola Lookman is on fire πŸ”₯ brahim diaz is putting up a good fight, but i think lookman's goal tally might just get him the best player award 😎 morocco needs to stay focused tho, 50 years without afcon glory is a big deal πŸ™Œ it'll be interesting to see how they handle the pressure. wilfried ndidi's suspension doesn't help nigeria's chances though 😬

The stage is set for an intriguing encounter between two formidable African nations πŸ†. The fact that Nigeria has been relatively dominant throughout their campaign, with a flawless group stage and convincing quarterfinal victories, puts immense pressure on Morocco to deliver a resounding performance. The Super Eagles' impressive form guide, having won all five matches so far, will make it challenging for the Atlas Lions to break them down.

Meanwhile, Morocco's reliance on Achraf Diaz, who has been instrumental in their tournament progress, raises concerns about their ability to cope if he is injured or suspended. On the other hand, Nigeria's depth and variety, with players like Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen providing a potent threat up front, makes them an even more formidable opponent.

Ultimately, this semi-final clash promises to be a thrilling contest that will separate the titans from the contenders 🀯. The question on everyone's mind is: can Morocco overcome their historical disadvantage against Nigeria to secure their first AFCON semifinal appearance since 2004?

🌟 I'm so hyped for this AFCON semi-final match πŸŽ‰! Nigeria's unbeaten run is giving me all the feels πŸ’ͺ, and their top scorers are making a statement πŸ—£οΈ. Meanwhile, Morocco's historic semifinal appearance is a dream come true for Moroccans everywhere 😊. It'll be so cool to see Achraf Hakimi back in action πŸ”₯! The pressure on Morocco is immense, but coach Regragui's optimism is infectious πŸ’«. Whoever wins this match will be one step closer to the AFCON title πŸ†. Bring it on! ⚽️πŸ’ͺ

Wow 🀯, this is gonna be a wild game! πŸ˜… I mean, Nigeria's on fire right now, but Morocco has been quietly building up their momentum and it's cool to see Walid Regragui's enthusiasm about his team's progress πŸ™Œ. Diaz is definitely a superstar in the making, but Ademola Lookman's form is no joke too! πŸ’₯

I gotta say, these teams are bringing it πŸ”₯! Nigeria is on fire right now, with all their matches won so far πŸ˜…. And that Ademola Lookman is a beast on the pitch πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ! But you can't count out Morocco, they're having an amazing run too πŸ’ͺ. It's crazy to think about how close this match is going to be, I mean, both teams are evenly matched and all that 😲. Morocco needs to keep their cool like coach Regragui said πŸ™, but Nigeria's got the firepower, it's gonna be a tough one to call πŸ€”!

OMG, can't believe Nigeria is lookin like the team to beat atm 🀯! They've got some serious firepower with Osimhen and Lookman strikin up a storm πŸ’₯. Morocco's Diaz is puttin in a good shift too, but they're gonna need more than just individual brilliance to take down the Super Eagles πŸ”₯.

Morocco's pressure is real tho, bein the hosts and all that 🀯. They gotta keep their cool and not get too caught up in the moment or they'll fold under the weight of expectation πŸ˜…. Nigeria's got 17 semis appearances under their belt, it's like they're the AFCON equivalent of the New England Patriots - always showin up to the party πŸŽ‰.

One thing that's got me thinkin tho is how much Nigeria's reliance on Osimhen and Lookman says about their squad depth πŸ€”. If those two go down, do they've got enough fire power to keep pushin? Morocco's gonna need more than just a Diaz showstopper to take 'em down 😎

I'm hyped for this AFCON semis match 🀩 but I gotta say, Nigeria's been on fire πŸ”₯ and I don't think Morocco can keep up with their pace. They've got some talented players like Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen who are always causing problems for opposing teams. The fact that they've won all five matches so far is a big concern for Morocco - how will they stop them? 😬 On the other hand, Brahim Diaz has been doing well for Morocco too πŸ€” but I'm not sure if one man can single-handedly take them to victory. It's gonna be a tough match, that's for sure πŸ†

can't believe how stacked nigeria is 🀯 they got this super eagles squad that's just on fire πŸ”₯ ademola lookman and osimhen are literally unstoppable πŸ’ͺ morocco's gotta bring their A-game if they wanna take down the champs πŸ‘Š
