Amanda Serrano retains her WBA, WBO and Ring Magazine featherweight titles with a hard-fought points win over Reina Tellez in Puerto Rico.
The 37-year-old American champion was looking to make a statement on home soil for the first time since 2021, and she didn't disappoint. Serrano's powerful southpaw stance and sharp combinations were too much for the plucky challenger from Puerto Rico.
Tellez, just 22 years old, had been deemed a dark horse by many pundits before the fight, but she more than held her own against one of the best female boxers in the world. She was able to land several good shots and even caught Serrano with an overhand left that caused swelling under her right eye.
Despite the setback, however, it was Serrano's experience and ring intelligence that ultimately told as she regained control of the bout from the fifth round onwards. The champion used her jab to keep Tellez at bay and then unleashed a flurry of combinations to wear her down.
Serrano won all three judges' scorecards by a wide margin, with scores of 98-92, 97-93, and 97-93. It was a dominant performance that will have given Serrano fans plenty to celebrate.
The victory extended Serrano's professional record to 48 wins, with just four defeats - three against Katie Taylor and one draw. She has now cemented her status as one of the best female boxers in the world, and it's clear that she is still hungry for more.
In other action on the card, Holly Holm was outpointed by Stephanie Han to lose her bid to become a four-division boxing champion. The fight was stopped in the seventh round after the ringside doctor deemed Han unable to continue due to a cut to her forehead caused by an accidental clash of heads.
