Amazon is winding down its still-popular New World MMO amid mass layoffs

Amazon Winds Down Support for Aeternum, MMO's Still-Worthy Future Uncertain Amid Mass Layoffs and Shift in Focus.

After nearly four years of continuous content updates and a major console release, Amazon Games has made the difficult decision to discontinue support for New World: Aeternum. The announcement comes as part of the company's efforts to adjust its game development strategy amid widespread layoffs, particularly affecting MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) titles like New World.

In a blog post, Amazon explained that "after steady content updates and a major new console release, we've reached a point where it is no longer sustainable to continue supporting the game with new content updates." The recent Season 10 and Nighthaven update will serve as the final content release for the game on PC and consoles. Players can still purchase New World now, and it will remain available to PlayStation Plus subscribers until further notice.

Although the game's servers are set to be maintained through 2026, allowing players a minimum of six months' notice before any significant changes impact gameplay. This period of transition raises questions about the long-term sustainability of Aeternum as an MMO title, with Amazon seemingly shifting its focus towards cloud gaming services, such as Luna.

Amazon's decision to discontinue support for New World is part of a broader trend in the company's game development strategy, which appears to be evolving away from traditional MMOs. The Lord of the Rings MMO project has reportedly been canceled according to recent claims by former Amazon senior gameplay engineer Christopher.

New World, despite its popularity, has seen a significant decline in concurrent player counts since its release in 2021, with peak numbers reaching nearly 914,000 on Steam. While it remains a popular game, its continued support is uncertain as the company refocuses on more casual and AI-focused games for Luna, such as Courtroom Chaos: Starring Snoop Dogg.

Man, I'm kinda bummed to hear that Amazon's dropping support for New World πŸ€•. I mean, I've had a blast playing it with my friends, but at the same time, I get why they're making these changes - MMOs can be super resource-intensive and not as profitable as other types of games.

I'm still holding out hope that New World's servers will be kept alive for a bit longer 🀞. Six months isn't a ton of time, especially if Amazon is shifting its focus to cloud gaming services like Luna. That game's looking pretty cool, but it'll never replace the classic MMO experience for some folks.

It's weird, though - I feel like we just got done with Season 10 and Nighthaven, and now that's it? πŸ˜” Guess it's time to say goodbye to Aeternum... or at least until they come back to visit.

man this sucks i was really enjoying new world πŸ€• my friends and I were trying to reach that 1000 player count goal lol but anyway i think amazon made the right call they just got so many layoffs and their focus is shifting to luna now which makes sense they need to prioritize their resources but it's still sad for new world fans we'll probably see some new content from other devs tho πŸ€” maybe a better server experience or somethin

Ugh, this is gonna be sad πŸ€•, I know some ppl were really into New World, but let's be real, it's been a bit of a trainwreck since its launch... like, 914k concurrent players? That was a fluke, IMO πŸ€‘. And now Amazon's just gonna abandon ship and shift their focus to cloud gaming services? That makes sense I guess, they can't keep pouring all that cash into MMOs when they're not making as much money from them πŸ’Έ. But still, it's a shame cuz the game had some cool ideas... now we'll just have to wait & see if Luna takes off 🀞.

I'm so bummed to hear that Amazon is winding down support for New World πŸ€•. I mean, I've played it with some friends online and had a blast, but at the same time, I get why they'd want to focus on other things... like cloud gaming services πŸ’». It's just crazy how fast the gaming landscape changes, you know? πŸ˜… But for the players who still care about Aeternum, I hope they'll be able to keep playing it for a while longer and find ways to keep their communities together 🀝. It's always sad when games die, but at least we can look back on some amazing memories with New World πŸ’₯.

I feel bad for the New World community... they've been playing this game since 2021 and now it's getting discontinued πŸ€•. I get that Amazon needs to adjust its strategy and focus on new areas like cloud gaming, but it's sad that Aeternum won't have a sustainable future anymore 🌫️. Still, players can still play the game for a bit longer, so they'll at least have some time to wrap up their progress πŸ’». I hope Amazon will support its other games better, like Luna... it seems like it has more potential with projects like Courtroom Chaos πŸ˜‚.

I think Amazon's decision to discontinue support for New World is kinda harsh πŸ€”... I mean, the game still has a dedicated community and it's had some awesome updates over the years. It's just that with all these layoffs and shifts in focus, it's hard to see how they can sustain it financially. But at the same time, I get why they'd wanna pivot towards cloud gaming services - Luna is looking pretty cool πŸ“Ί... maybe this is the game industry's future? I'm not gonna lie, though, it's kinda sad for all the players who've invested so much time into Aeternum πŸ˜”... still, it's all part of change and growth, right? 🀞

πŸ˜” what's going on with New World? I mean, I know it's been around for a bit and had some ups & downs, but four years of continuous content updates is no joke! 🀯 And now, the devs are just gonna leave it to rot? 🚫 It's a shame, especially since it was one of the first big MMOs on console. I still play it from time to time and have a blast exploring that world. 😎 But I guess you can't keep up with changing trends forever... πŸ’” Maybe they'll revive it or something, but for now, it's just a sad day for gamers who loved Aeternum πŸ€•

man this is sad news πŸ€• new world was still getting some decent updates last season but i guess amazon's just not feeling it anymore πŸ’Έ they're shifting focus to luna which is cool and all but it's gonna be hard for them to replicate the same magic with a different kind of game 😊 what's next for aeternum tho? are we gonna see a revival or just a memory πŸ’

ugh man i'm so bummed to hear about new world πŸ€• aeternum was such a great game and it had so much potential but amazon just can't seem to commit to it i mean what's going on with the layoffs tho? like they're cutting people left and right and then they're still gonna support some games but not others? doesn't make sense πŸ€” anyway, i'm kinda sad that aeternum is basically done now but i guess cloud gaming services are the future and amazon's trying to adapt to it πŸ’» hopefully they can find a way to make it work for them but for now i'm gonna just keep on playing what i love 😐

im sad to hear about new world... i mean, i get it tho, amazon's gotta make some tough decisions & they're trying to shift their focus to cloud gaming services like luna 🌫️. the problem is, if they're not investing in games like new world anymore, how long can they keep it alive? 6 months sounds like a good start, but what happens after that? will players still be able to log in & play with their friends?

i remember when new world first came out & everyone was hyped... the gameplay was cool and the servers were huge, it felt like u were part of something big 😎. but over time, things kinda fizzled out. i know some people left because they got bored or couldn't keep up with the updates, while others just stopped playing altogether.

i guess what's weird is that amazon's still gonna support new world with the servers until 2026... that's a pretty big commitment. what does that even mean? are they trying to milk it for one last hurrah or something? πŸ€”
