Anger in Papua New Guinea after Starlink ordered to shut down internet services

Papua New Guinea is reeling under the pain of losing access to internet services as the government ordered Starlink, a satellite internet company owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX, to shut down its operations in the country. Weeks after the order was issued, frustration has been growing among businesses, health providers, and communities who are struggling without access to reliable online services.

The shutdown, ordered by the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (Nicta), claimed that Starlink was not licensed in PNG. Nicta's acting chief executive, Lume Pvolume, stated that until the legal process is completed, services cannot be allowed. However, no timeline has been provided for when a directive will be issued.

The impact of the shutdown has been felt harshly by many, with thousands of people relying on Starlink in remote areas where mobile networks are unreliable or non-existent. Businessman and former Maprik MP John Simon argued that the shutdown ignored the struggles of ordinary people and small businesses in PNG.

"This is really bad for this country," he said. "Internet and online services have been very expensive and slow for years, yet we cannot listen to the little people out on the street and sort this out."

The shutdown has disrupted the work of health workers and teachers who relied heavily on Starlink for communication with doctors in town and sending reports quickly. Theresa Juni, a health worker from East Sepik province, said that without Starlink, her clinic was facing delays in treating patients who needed urgent care.

For students, the loss of internet access has also been devastating. Simon Jack, a teacher at a high school in Southern Highlands province, said that the shutdown was making life hard for his students who needed to check their results and see where they had been selected to study this year.

As Starlink faces another licensing issue in PNG, it is clear that many ordinary people are feeling the pain of losing access to reliable online services. With thousands of people reliant on the service, the government's decision has left a trail of frustration and hardship across the country.

Meanwhile, an online petition signed by 200 people is calling for Starlink to be allowed to operate legally in PNG. As the standoff continues, one thing is certain - Papua New Guinea's internet users are not about to let this issue fade away without a fight.

it's like a big puzzle and starlink was the missing piece 🀯... imagine thousands of people stuck in remote areas with no way to access the internet or online services 🌐... it's heartbreaking to think that small businesses and health workers are struggling because of this πŸ€•... i feel for john simon, he's right, we need to listen to the little people on the street πŸ‘₯... what's going on is like a big game of cat and mouse between starlink and nicta βš”οΈ... until they figure out a solution, thousands of people are stuck in the dark πŸŒ‘... maybe it's time for a different approach? πŸ’‘ an online petition with 200 signatures is just the beginning πŸ“’... something needs to change ASAP! πŸ•’

omg u gotta feel 4 ppl in png right now 🀯 they r gettin shafted by gov over starlink shutdown! like who decides these things? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ the whole country is getting whiplash from unreliable mobile networks n no decent internet πŸ’” but like, what's da big deal about a lil satelite internet co not havin a license lol @nicta 4 all de confusion πŸ™„ & yeah john simon spoke da truth! ordinary ppl r sufferin big time 😭 health workers, teachers, students... they r all gettin disrupted n it's just not right πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ we need stable internet 4 progress 2 happen ASAP ⏱️ & btw who decides wut's "legal" online 2 b anyway? πŸ€”

πŸ€• I cant believe what's happening in PNG 🌴 they're shutting down Starlink which provides internet services to thousands of people in remote areas and it's gonna make life harder for health workers like Theresa Juni who need to send reports quickly ⏰ my heart goes out to all those affected by this shutdown πŸ˜”

I'm worried about the impact of this shutdown on daily life in PNG. I mean, it's already bad enough that mobile networks are unreliable or non-existent in some areas, but losing Starlink is like hitting a brick wall 🀯. Businesses and communities rely on those services for communication and connectivity, and now they're being forced to deal with the consequences of this shutdown. It's not just about the tech itself, it's about the people who need those services to survive.

I'm all for regulations and licenses, but come on, can't we find a way to balance that with the needs of everyday people? It feels like the government is piling more complexity onto an already complex issue πŸ˜’. I hope they can resolve this soon, because the longer it takes, the harder it'll be for those affected.

🚨 This shutdown has exposed the glaring gap between our government's stance on regulation and the everyday lives of ordinary citizens πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ In a country where remote communities rely heavily on Starlink for basic communication, shutting down their internet services is nothing short of disastrous πŸ’” The lack of transparency from Nicta on when this directive will be issued only adds to the frustration, leaving thousands in the dark πŸ•°οΈ It's high time our policymakers recognize that technology is a vital lifeline for many and not just another regulatory hurdle πŸ“ˆ

Ugh 🀯, can't believe the gov's being so harsh on Starlink! People r struggling out there with no reliable internet access and now they're just shutting down services? πŸ™„ It's like they're ignoring the little people who really need it. I mean, have u seen how unreliable mobile networks are in PNG? It's like they r more interested in playing politics than fixing problems. πŸ€” The impact on health workers, teachers, and students is huge - delays in treating patients, missed school deadlines, and online education just got a whole lot harder πŸ“šπŸ’»

As an online community, we gotta come together to support Starlink and make our voices heard! 🌟 I mean, 200 signatures on that petition already? That's like, what, 0.1% of the population? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ We need to keep pushing for change and show those in power that people care about this issue. It's time to put the little people first instead of just politicians and bureaucrats πŸ™Œ

I feel bad for those people struggling with no internet access in rural areas πŸ“ŠπŸ˜©. It's like they're being left behind in the digital age. Small businesses and healthcare services are really suffering from this shutdown β°πŸ’Έ. The government needs to get its act together and figure out a way to make internet services more accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford it πŸ’»πŸ‘₯. Maybe they could look into alternative options like fiber-optic cables or something πŸ€”. It's just not fair that thousands of people are being affected by this one decision πŸš«πŸ’”.

I'm seeing this and I'm like... what's going on?! 🀯 The shutdown of Starlink services in Papua New Guinea is just, like, basic human rights stuff. People need access to the internet, especially when it comes to healthcare and education. It's not that hard, you know? πŸ˜’ They're talking about a country where mobile networks are already unreliable... it's like they expect people to be able to survive without internet for some reason? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And what really gets me is that the government is just ignoring all these people who are affected by this shutdown. It's not like Starlink is the only game in town... there should be other options available, or at least more infrastructure in place to support rural communities. This whole thing feels like a big mess and it's going to take a lot for people to trust that things will get sorted out. πŸ’”

I'm really worried about this situation in Papua New Guinea. It's not fair that people are being forced offline just because of a licensing issue πŸ€•. I mean, what's the point of having internet if you can't use it? The shutdown is going to have a huge impact on businesses, healthcare and education - it's like taking away their lifeline πŸ’‘.

I'm all for accountability and following rules, but this feels like a big overreach by the government πŸ€”. I'd love to see them work with Starlink to find a solution that benefits everyone. The fact that ordinary people are struggling to get online is just heartbreaking πŸ˜”. We need to stand up for those who can't fight for themselves - especially in remote areas where mobile networks are basically non-existent πŸ’₯.

It's crazy that it took 200 people to start an online petition, but I'm glad they did 🀝. This shows that there's a growing awareness about the issue and we need to keep pushing for change πŸ”₯. We can't let our voices be silenced by bureaucratic red tape πŸ’ͺ.

OMG u cant believe whats happenin in png?? 🀯 theyre literally gettin cut off from the world cuz elon musks spacetx didnt get the right licence lol what r they even doin?? πŸ˜‚ the people ar suffering so bad w/o starlink they got no mobile signal either so its like a digital desolate wasteland over there fam πŸ’» i feel for the health workers & teachers who cant even dont send reports cuz of this nonsense πŸ™„

its so sad to hear that png is losing access to internet services πŸ€•πŸ“± i mean whats the point of having modern tech if u cant use it? starlink was like a lifeline for ppl in remote areas, especially with unreliable mobile networks. businesses, health workers, teachers... everyone's affected 🀯.

i feel 4 john simon, he's right, we need 2 listen 2 the little people out there. internet access shd be available 2 all, not just the wealthy few πŸ€‘. whats the government gonna do? give us a timeline or jus let us suffer 4 months more without internet πŸ•°οΈ?

i hope they dont shut down starlink 4 good. ppl need 2 access the online world, especially 4 education & healthcare purposes πŸ“šπŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ. its not like they r asking 4 a free ride, jus fair licenses & regulations πŸ‘

I'm getting really frustrated with the PNG gov's handling of this Starlink shutdown 🀯. It's like they're more worried about following rules than helping the ppl. Thousands of people are affected, and yet no timeline is given for when services will be reinstated πŸ•°οΈ. Meanwhile, ordinary businesses and health workers are left to suffer. This is not a democratic gov that listens to its citizens, it's just an autocratic regime that cares only about maintaining its grip on power πŸ’ͺ. It's gonna take a lot more than just online petitions to bring this gov back down to earth 🌎

🚨 this is just so messed up 🀯 how can u just shut off the only reliable internet for these ppl? especially in remote areas where mobile networks dont even exist lol. its like they forgot that these ppl need access 2 the internet 4 survival & education. its not just a matter of licensing, its about the people who are affected by this decision πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

omg u wont believe whats happening in papua new guinea 🀯 they shut down starlink and now ppl r struggling so much πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ like how r supposed 2 do online work or check results w/o internet?? πŸ“Š its been slow n expensive 4 yrs already nd nicta just comes out of nowhere & shuts it down 🚫 no timeline 4 when theyll sort it out πŸ•°οΈ and u hear from business ppl who r affected πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ like john simon he said its really bad 4 the country πŸ˜” health workers n teachers r suffering too πŸ₯πŸ“š and now students r in trouble cuz they cant check results πŸ“ what r nicta thinkin?? πŸ€” online petition signed by 200 ppl & stil nobody knows wut gonna happen πŸ’Έ so yeah papua new guinea is definitely not happy bout dis πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€• This is so sad, I've got family living up there and they're really struggling with no internet access πŸ“΅πŸ‘€ It's like they're stuck in the dark ages πŸŒ‘ Businesses and communities are being crippled by this shutdown πŸ’” And what's even more frustrating is that we don't know when it'll be fixed 😩 The people who rely on Starlink, especially in those remote areas, need reliable internet to survive ⛑️ They can't afford to lose their livelihoods over a licensing issue πŸ€‘ It's like the government is ignoring the struggles of ordinary Papua New Guineans πŸ‘Ž

I'm totally worried about what's happening in Papua New Guinea πŸ€•... Losing access to internet services is like cutting off a lifeline for so many people, especially in remote areas where mobile networks don't work. It's not just businesses and health providers that are struggling, but also students who need online services to study and get their results. I feel so bad for Theresa Juni and her clinic, they're losing precious time treating patients 🀒.

It's like the government is ignoring all the people who rely on Starlink for online services πŸ’”... The shutdown has been going on for weeks, and no timeline is given for when it will be resolved. Meanwhile, thousands of people are still without internet access, and it's having a huge impact on their daily lives πŸ“Š.

I think it's time for the government to reconsider its decision and find a way to make Starlink operate legally in PNG βš–οΈ... The online petition is a great idea, showing that there's still public support for the service. I hope someone listens to all the voices out there, especially the ones who are struggling without access to reliable online services πŸ€—.

πŸ˜• This is so sad what's happening with the internet shutdown in PNG... I mean, I get it that there needs to be some sort of licensing process and all, but come on, Elon Musk's got people living out there who really need reliable internet access. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ I remember when my cousin lived in a remote village and they didn't even have decent mobile coverage, let alone fast Wi-Fi. They had to rely on satellite internet just like the people in PNG right now... it's crazy how much of an impact this is having on their daily lives. πŸ‘Ž

man πŸ€• I feel so bad for all those ppl struggling w/ no internet access in png 🌴 its like they're stuck in the dark ages πŸ“¦ and yeah, starlink being shut down is super frustrating 200 people already started an online petition tho 😊 which is awesome πŸ’– cuz who doesn't love a good underdog story? πŸ°πŸ‘ let's hope someone from nicta comes around & gives them a timeline soon ⏰ 'cause thousands of ppl are counting on it πŸ‘€
