A former world heavyweight boxing champion is facing a terrifying reality after his driver was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in Nigeria. Anthony Joshua, 36, and his personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, 36, were among two people who lost their lives in the fatal crash that also injured Joshua's strength coach, Sina Ghami.
According to eyewitnesses, the Lexus SUV was traveling at a high speed when its tyre burst while attempting an overtaking maneuver. The vehicle then crashed into a stationary lorry carrying soya beans illegally parked on the hard shoulder of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The driver, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who has been working for Joshua's team for years, has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, as well as driving without a valid license and failing to exercise due care while driving. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 20th.
Witnesses say that the Lexus was traveling "beyond the legally prescribed speed limit" when it crashed into the stationary vehicle, which has raised concerns about the state of road safety in Nigeria.
Joshua, who had celebrated a victory against YouTuber Jake Paul just 10 days before the crash, is said to be stable and recovering at a medical facility in Lagos. His mother also paid her respects to Joshua's friends at the funeral home following the tragic incident.
The Federal Road Safety Corps has promised to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, and the Ogun state government has condemned the incident, saying that it highlights the need for improved road safety measures in the country.
