"Bitter Chill Ahead: Arctic Air Brings Snow and Wind Chills to Sunday's Bears Game"
A blast of arctic air is set to hit the Chicago area on Sunday night, bringing with it wind chills plummeting to minus-20 degrees below zero and potentially heavy snowfall for the city. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, warning of hazardous travel conditions, icy roads, and reduced visibility.
For Bears fans attending the team's playoff game at Soldier Field, which is set to kick off just before sunset, the forecast is looking like a dusting of snow with temperatures dipping to around 5 degrees. Northwest Chicago residents can expect even colder wind chills, some as low as minus-25 degrees.
The arctic air will bring with it a significant risk of hypothermia and frostbite, especially for those exposed outdoors for short periods. "Roads could get pretty slippery, so we don't want people letting their guard down," said National Weather Service meteorologist Brett Borchardt. "Certainly during the game, we're expecting snow to be falling."
To combat the cold, city warming centers will be open on Sunday and Monday, including the 10 S. Kedzie Ave location, as well as Chicago Public Library and park district locations. Cook County courthouses will also serve as warming shelters.
The cold snap is expected to continue into Tuesday, with temperatures gradually warming up before dropping back into the 20s by Wednesday. However, more snow could be on the way later in the week, with another push of arctic air next weekend potentially bringing even lower temperatures than Sunday night's bitter chill.
Borchardt warned that the exact track of the storms is still uncertain, but advises residents to bundle up and keep their jackets handy. "It's going to be a wintry week in Chicago," he said.
