"Bitter Cold to Hit Chicago Ahead of Bears Game: Arctic Air Brings Wind Chill of Minus-20 and Snow"
A cold snap is moving into the Chicago area ahead of Sunday's NFL playoff game between the Bears and their expected snowfall, with wind chills plummeting to as low as minus-25 in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued a weather advisory for the region, warning of hazardous travel conditions due to icy roads and reduced visibility.
The city is expected to receive 1-2 inches of snow by Sunday night, while the northwest portion of the state will see even colder wind chills with temperatures as low as minus-25. Travelers are advised to take precautions, especially during the game when snowfall is expected to continue.
"It's going to be a wintry week in Chicago," said National Weather Service meteorologist Brett Borchardt. "We're expecting roads to get pretty slippery, so we don't want people letting their guard down." The service has also warned of the dangers of hypothermia and frostbite, particularly after less than 30 minutes of exposure to the evening's temperatures.
To help those affected by the cold, various warming shelters have been set up across the city, including Chicago Public Library locations, park district facilities, and senior centers. Cook County courthouses will also serve as warming shelters, with food, water, and restrooms available for those seeking shelter.
While the cold air is expected to persist through the week, a slight reprieve in temperatures is forecasted by Tuesday, followed by warmer weather by Wednesday. However, more snow could be on the way later in the week, as well as another push of Arctic air next weekend that could bring even lower temperatures than Sunday night.
Residents are advised to bundle up and stay warm until further notice, with wind chills expected to remain around 20 below zero through Monday morning.
