'At the table or on the menu': a turbulent Davos week with Trump's circus in town

The World Economic Forum's annual gathering in Davos, Switzerland, turned into a circus this year with Donald Trump's presence at the forefront. The event, which brings together thousands of business leaders, politicians, and academics, usually focuses on global economic issues but was hijacked by Trump's aggressive rhetoric and policies.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, a vocal critic of Trump's approach to international relations, delivered a stirring speech that rallied resistance against what he called a "system of intensifying great power rivalry." He warned "middle powers" to band together or face the consequences. The audience responded positively, with some Labour MPs in the UK reportedly passing around his speech.

However, when it was Trump's turn to speak, the atmosphere shifted dramatically. His address was marked by rambling remarks, veiled insults, and what one attendee described as "racist" language. Somalian people were singled out for being "low-IQ," sparking a muted reaction from the audience, which seemed hesitant to criticize Trump directly.

Despite the controversy surrounding Trump's speech, many attendees chose not to confront him on the issue. Instead, they focused on securing spots in the crowded congress hall or trying to get into the exclusive networking sessions. This focus on self-interest and avoiding conflict was criticized by François Valerian, chair of Transparency International, who stated that this year's Davos gathering "talked about everything but the essential."

Other issues, such as climate change, poverty, and hunger, took a backseat to Trump's agenda. Even the war in Ukraine, which has been escalating in recent months, was noticeably absent from the discussions.

One notable exception was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who delivered an impassioned speech about the importance of EU unity in the face of Russian aggression. However, his message was largely drowned out by Trump's antics and the overall focus on the US president's agenda.

The event also saw a convergence of progressive and populist voices, with politicians like Javier Milei from Argentina and Nigel Farage joining forces to reject the status quo. However, even these voices were muted by Trump's dominance.

As the forum struggled to regain its footing after Trump's speech, it became clear that this year's Davos gathering was more about the Trump show than a serious effort to address pressing global issues. The power of self-interest and the desire to avoid conflict overshadowed the need for meaningful discussion and collective action on critical issues facing the world.

The World Economic Forum's attempt to revive its purpose in the face of Trump's divisive rhetoric and policies remains uncertain. It will require more than just a few powerful speeches and a few well-rehearsed statements to reclaim the event's relevance. The forum needs to confront the elephant in the room – the toxic influence of Trump's presence – and find a way to harness its energy towards constructive change, rather than allowing it to hijack the entire agenda.

Ugh 😒🤦‍♂️ just got back from Davos and I'm still reeling 🌪️ From what I saw, it was all about Trump's ego 💁‍♂️ and nobody wanted to rock the boat 🚣‍♀️. Like, where were the discussions about climate change? 🌡️ or poverty? 🤷‍♀️ It felt like everyone just wanted to get in on the networking sessions 📈 and secure their spot in the congress hall 💼. Even the progressive voices got muffled 🗣️ by Trump's divisive rhetoric. I'm still hoping for a more meaningful conversation 🤝 at next year's event, but it seems unlikely 🤔. The whole thing felt like a circus 🎪 with Trump as the ringmaster 🐒. Can't wait to see what other "leaders" bring to the table 📈

omg did u see that speech by trump at davos?? 🤯 he just went all out racist on somali ppl i'm not surprised tho the us is always playing the victim card and trying to gaslight everyone else 🙄 anyway this year's davos was literally all about him and his agenda, it's like they forgot about all the other issues that matter 💸 poverty hunger climate change... who cares about that when trump's at the mic? 🤷‍♀️ even the eu president's speech got drowned out by trump's tantrums 🗣️

trump's presence at davos is literally a joke 🤣 i mean who needs global issues when you've got trump spewing racist nonsense all over the place? 🙄 the audience should've been like "okay trump that's enough" but instead they just sat there looking uncomfortable 😐 mark carney's speech was fire btw, he should be leading the charge against trump's policies 💪

I'm just soooo impressed by how well Davos managed to turn a serious global economic summit into a circus, thanks for absolutely no reason other than for someone being there 🤣. I mean who needs actual meaningful discussion about climate change or poverty when you can have a good old-fashioned Trump tantrum? It's not like the world is facing some pretty pressing issues that need attention or anything 🙄. And kudos to the attendees who were too busy trying to get into the networking sessions to actually care about what was being said 🤷‍♀️. I'm just so glad that Ukraine got an extra dose of loudspeaking from Zelenskyy, because that's exactly what the world needs more of – a strong leader yelling at everyone to "be united" 😒. The progressive and populist voices were like the obligatory participation trophy for trying hard, but ultimately getting ignored by the main event 🏆. Can't wait to see how they manage to revive the forum from this mess 💀

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this year's Davos gathering 🤯... I mean, what was supposed to be a serious talk about global economic issues turned into a circus with Trump at the center of attention 🎪. It's like everyone just tuned out when he started speaking and were all about getting in on the networking sessions 💼. And can we talk about how weird it is that nobody was willing to confront him directly? I mean, what kind of event allows someone to get away with saying racist stuff and not face any backlash? 🤔... It's like the whole room just went silent 😴.

And meanwhile, important issues like climate change and poverty were basically ignored 💸. I know it's easy to get caught up in the drama of the moment, but sometimes you've got to take a step back and think about what's really important 🔙. The World Economic Forum needs to figure out how to balance the Trump show with some real substance 💡... or risk losing its relevance altogether 🤖

🤔 Davos this year felt like a weird experiment where everyone was too busy trying not to upset trump 🙅‍♂️ than actually tackling the big issues. I mean, climate change and poverty are still major problems but nobody wanted to rock the boat by mentioning them 🌡️💸. And Trump's speech was just straight up embarrassing 😳... I don't know what's more concerning, the fact that he said those racist things or that nobody had the guts to call him out on it 👊. Anyway, I'm still trying to figure out if this whole thing was worth watching 📺

I'm still trying to process what happened at Davos 🤯. I mean, I knew Trump was going to stir up some drama but I didn't expect him to basically take over the whole thing 😱. It's like he's got this aura of controversy around him that just draws people in, even when they're not sure if they want to be there.

I felt so sorry for Mark Carney trying to give a serious speech and then Trump comes along and just hijacks the whole thing 💥. And I know some people were too scared to speak up about it, which is just weird 😐. It's like we're all getting really good at ignoring the elephant in the room 🤫.

But at the same time, I think there are a lot of us who are watching and thinking "yeah, this isn't okay" 👀. And I love that some people, like Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Javier Milei, were willing to speak out even when it's hard 🤝.

The thing is, Davos used to be about bringing people together to talk about the tough stuff but now it feels like just a bunch of self-interest 🤑. It's like we're all too scared to have a real conversation about what really matters 🤷‍♀️. But I still believe that we can make a difference if we work together 💪. We just need to find a way to overcome the noise and get back to having some real substance conversations 🔥.

😒 I mean, what's up with these high-profile events anymore? It feels like nobody wants to actually tackle the tough issues. Climate change, poverty, hunger - all those things get pushed aside because some guy (or girl) is standing on stage talking about... well, whatever it is Trump's talking about 🤷‍♂️.

And can we talk about how messed up it is that people are more interested in schmoozing with each other and getting a good table at the networking sessions than actually engaging with some of the most pressing problems of our time? I mean, come on! We've got wars to be fought, economic crises to be addressed... but no, instead we're all just stuck in this vortex of self-interest 🤯.

It's like, what happened to the old days when leaders would actually show up and talk about something meaningful? Now it feels like everyone's just trying to get their 15 minutes of fame and ignore the real issues. And don't even get me started on Trump - what a disaster 😡.

I guess that's why they say "the whole is less than the sum of its parts"... or in this case, "the whole is more than the sum of its toxic egos". 🤪

🤯 I'm so tired of this kind of spectacle at Davos... like what's the point of even showing up if we're just gonna let Trump hijack the whole thing with his divisive rhetoric and policies? 🙄 It feels like the entire forum was reduced to just a circus, with everyone too scared or self-interested to speak out against him. I mean, where were the real leaders when it came down to discussing climate change, poverty, and hunger? 🤷‍♀️ Those are the issues that should be getting our attention, not Trump's ego trip. 🙄

I'm tellin' ya 🙃, Davos has always been about thinkin' big, but now it feels like they're more worried 'bout who's gonna make the best selfie at the gala 🤳♂️. I mean, what's the point of gettin' all these heavy hitters together if you're just gonna have a bunch of empty talk? It's like my granddad used to say: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" 🙄. These issues we got on our hands – climate change, poverty, hunger... they ain't goin' away because some rich folks decide to ignore 'em. And now with Trump at the wheel, I'm not surprised nobody's gettin' too riled up about it 😐. It's like they're all just tryin' to get in on the Trump train 🚂 and hope it takes 'em somewhere cool. Newsflash: it won't 💨

🤔 davos 2025 was such a mess i mean trump just went off on this somali thing and like everyone was super uncomfortable but nobody said anything... it's like we're all just too scared to speak up 🙅‍♂️ anyway canadian pm mark carney's speech was fire tho 💥 he totally roasted trump's policies and stuff gotta give him props for that. but yeah the whole event felt kinda shallow this year, like everyone was just trying to network and get ahead rather than actually having a real discussion about important issues 🤷‍♂️ climate change poverty hunger all that jazz got lost in the noise of trump's ego trip 🌪️

I'm not sure what was more cringeworthy – Trump's speech or the fact that people were trying to avoid talking about it 😳. I get that he's a polarizing figure, but come on, folks! The world is facing some serious issues and we need leaders who can have real conversations about climate change, poverty, hunger... you name it. Instead, they're all about who can make the most noise on social media 📱. And don't even get me started on the whole "system of intensifying great power rivalry" vibe – sounds like something out of a bad Cold War thriller to me 🕵️‍♂️. I'm not saying Trump's not a problem, but we need more than just one guy trying to solve all our global woes. It's time for a collective effort, not just a circus act 🎪.

lolol what's up with Davos this year? it's like they invited Donald Trump just to see who'd get lost in the crowd 😂. seriously though, I mean Trump's speech was pretty wild - I wouldn't call that language 'veiled' more like he left it all on the table 🤣 and honestly, somali people getting low-IQ remarks? no thanks 🙅‍♂️.

anywayz, climate change poverty hunger... these are the real issues we should be talking about but instead everyone's too busy trying to get a selfie with Trump or get an invite to his networking session 📸. and can we talk about how EU unity was basically drowned out by Trump's antics? it's like he's got this crazy ego and just won't shut up 💁‍♂️.

anywayz, I guess some people did speak out against the status quo - Milei & Farage were cool, but even they got overshadowed by Trump 🤷‍♂️. at the end of the day it's like the World Economic Forum is just trying to keep up with Trump's antics, but can't we have a serious convo about actual issues for once? 🤔.

🤔 so this Davos thing is literally more about trump being trump than actual serious stuff being discussed... like climate change poverty hunger all that jazz takes a backseat to his ego 💁‍♀️ anyone else feel like the whole event was just one big networking opportunity for the wealthy and powerful 🤑 meanwhile, somalian people get roasted by trump and nobody says anything... it's wild how the world economic forum lets this guy hijack the conversation without any real pushback 💥

I'm really disappointed with how this year's Davos gathering went down 🤕. It feels like all anyone wants to talk about is Trump's ego trip 🙄. Meanwhile, pressing issues like climate change and poverty got swept under the rug 🌀. I mean, come on, can't we have a serious conversation about these things without it turning into a circus? 🎪

I also think it's interesting that some of the progressive voices who usually speak up were muted by Trump's presence 👊. It's like they're all just too scared to take on the status quo and challenge him directly 💔.

But what really gets me is that everyone's so focused on trying to get in on the networking sessions or secure a spot in the congress hall 📚👥, rather than actually doing something meaningful about these issues. I mean, I'm all for business leaders coming together to discuss global economic issues, but can't we do better than just talking the talk and not walking the walk? 💪

I guess what I'm saying is that Davos needs a serious reboot 🔄. They need to find a way to harness the energy of these events towards constructive change, rather than just letting it get hijacked by someone like Trump 🤯. It's time for them to take a hard look at themselves and figure out how they can do better 💡.
