Attention by Anne Enright review – sparkling reflections on life and literature

Anne Enright's latest collection, Attention, is a sparkling showcase of her nonfiction prowess. Over 24 essays, each with its own new introduction by Enright herself, the renowned author has curated a decade's worth of thought-provoking commentary on life, literature, and everything in between.

One of the most striking aspects of Attention is Enright's willingness to delve into subjects that might not initially seem compelling. She effortlessly weaves together personal narratives, cultural critiques, and literary analysis with infectious wit and precision. Her reflections on marriage, love, and relationships are both deeply relatable and profoundly insightful, making even the most mundane topics – like a dinner choice on holiday – feel charged with emotional resonance.

Enright's approach to reading is similarly noteworthy. In her essays about Joyce's Ulysses, she advocates for a more nuanced understanding of the text, suggesting that re-readings are essential to unlocking its complex meanings. This approach not only highlights Enright's own commitment to close reading but also underscores the importance of approaching literature with an open mind and a willingness to challenge one's assumptions.

Throughout Attention, Enright proudly invokes her literary heritage, drawing on the traditions of Irish writers like Edna O'Brien and Maeve Brennan. Her essays demonstrate a keen understanding of these authors' styles and concerns, while also showcasing her own unique voice and perspective. At times, this can feel a touch self-congratulatory, but it's tempered by Enright's characteristic humor and humility.

What sets Enright apart is her willingness to confront her own flaws and limitations. She acknowledges her own biases and insecurities, often with a wry wit that makes these moments feel less self-indulgent than confessional. Her discussion of aid workers, for example, reveals a nuanced understanding of the complexities involved in humanitarian work – one that's both compassionate and unsparing.

Ultimately, Attention is a collection that rewards close attention (no pun intended). Each line has been carefully crafted to delight the ear as well as challenge the mind. Enright's writing is a masterclass in precision, wit, and emotional intelligence – making this collection an essential addition to any reader's library.

I'm loving this new book by Anne Enright 📚💫. She's like that one aunt who always says exactly what you need to hear but also makes you laugh 😂. Her essays are so well-written, I feel like I'm having a conversation with her over tea 🍵. I love how she talks about stuff that's not usually cool, like marriage and relationships, but still manages to make it sound interesting and relatable 💕. And can we talk about her approach to reading? Like, who knew re-reading Ulysses could be so exciting 🤯?! Anyway, this book is def a must-read for anyone who loves lit or just wants to learn more about life 🤩

I'm OBSESSED with Anne Enright's latest book Attention 🤯! Her ability to make even the most ordinary topics feel deeply relatable and resonant is honestly genius. I love how she doesn't shy away from tackling tough subjects, like relationships and cultural critiques, with such wit and precision 💡. And her approach to reading Joyce's Ulysses is so refreshing - I mean who else would say re-reading is essential to unlocking its meaning? 📖 It's clear she's done her homework on the great Irish writers, but what really sets her apart is her willingness to be vulnerable and self-aware 💕. Her humor and humility keep her essays from feeling too indulgent or pretentious. Anyway, if you haven't read it yet, GET ON IT! 🚀

I feel like I'm reading these essays on my phone just like I used to read blogs back in 2010 on Myspace 📱💻... they're so in-depth and personal, it's like Anne Enright is having a conversation with you over a cup of coffee ☕️. Her writing is all about the little things that make life interesting, like how she talks about aid workers and marriage being super relatable 🤗. And I love how she doesn't shy away from her own flaws – it's so refreshing to see someone be human on paper 📝. The way she writes about Joyce's Ulysses makes me want to re-read the book for the millionth time... okay, maybe not that many times 😂. Anyway, I'm totally obsessed with this collection and need to get my hands on a physical copy ASAP 📚💖.

so i just finished reading anne enright's latest essay collection attention 📚 and i gotta say its blowing my mind she has this way of taking everyday stuff like holiday dinner choices and turning them into these profound insights about life and love 🤯 what i think is most impressive about her though is how she approaches literature - she's all for close reading and re-reading to really get at the meaning behind a text, you know? 📖 it makes me want to revisit some of my favorite books with fresh eyes. but what really sets her apart is her willingness to be vulnerable and self-aware in her writing - she talks about her own biases and insecurities and its like, wow i feel seen 🤗

Meh, I mean, I guess it's nice that Anne Enright wrote another book 🤷‍♀️. The thing about Attention is that it just feels like more of the same old stuff from her - all these essays about marriage and love and relationships... I get it, she's got opinions on those things 😒. And don't even get me started on how cheesy it gets when she invokes Irish literary heritage 📚👀. It's just a bit too self-congratulatory at times, you know? But hey, I guess if you're into that sorta thing, Attention might be worth checking out 🤔. Just don't expect it to blow your mind or anything 😴. And honestly, the whole "willingness to confront her own flaws and limitations" vibe feels a bit too calculated for me... like she's trying way too hard to seem relatable 🙄. Still, I suppose some people might actually enjoy it 🤷‍♀️.

omg i just finished reading Anne Enright's new essay collection attention 🤩 its like she's speaking directly to your soul every time you read one of her essays, she has this way of making even the most ordinary things feel super meaningful and relatable. I also love how she talks about the importance of re-reading books multiple times, it's so true! 😂 and i'm all for her acknowledging her own flaws and limitations, it makes her writing feel more human and less perfect (because let's be real, who is?) 🙏

I just finished reading Attention by Anne Enright and I'm still reeling from how beautifully she's woven together these essays 🤯. She has this effortless way of making you laugh and think at the same time, it's like sipping a cup of coffee on a lazy Sunday morning ☕️. What really stood out to me was her humility - she's not afraid to say 'I don't know' or admit when she's wrong 🤦‍♀️. Her writing is just so polished and precise, you can tell she's done her research and thought things through before putting pen to paper 📝. If I'm being picky, the bit where she talks about herself a bit too much can be a bit much 😳 but overall, this collection is a must-read for anyone who loves good writing 💯.

omg u gotta read anne enright's latest collection "attention" 🤩 it's like she's speaking directly to ur soul! 💖 i mean, who else can make u laugh & cry at the same time while still having a deep convo about life, literature & everything in between? 📚👀 also, her writing is so precise & witty, its like she's giving u a masterclass on how to live better. 🤯 plus, shes not afraid to be real & acknowledge her own flaws & biases - that takes a lot of courage! 💪

"Believe you can and you're halfway there." 🚀 - Theodore Roosevelt I think what makes Anne Enright's Attention so special is her willingness to take risks and be vulnerable in her writing. She doesn't shy away from exploring the harder, more nuanced topics, and that's what makes her essays feel so honest and relatable. Her approach to literature and life feels like a breath of fresh air - she's not afraid to challenge herself or her readers.

.. I've been thinking about this book by Anne Enright and it got me thinking about how we always think of writers as being so 'in touch' with themselves, you know? Like they're just naturally witty and insightful because that's what they are. But then I started reading her essays and I realized she's actually really brave about sharing her own doubts and fears with us. She's like, 'hey, I'm not always right, I have biases too'. And that, to me, is what makes her writing so relatable and powerful. It's like we're all just trying to figure this thing out together, even if our words come out funny or wry sometimes 🤔

I'm absolutely loving Anne Enright's new book Attention 📚💫! Her essays are like little windows into her soul, you know? She's got this amazing ability to make you laugh and cry at the same time 😂🤯. I love how she's not afraid to talk about the really hard stuff – like marriage and relationships – but also makes it feel super relatable 💕. And honestly, her writing is just so precise and witty 📝💡. She's got this way of making you see things that you never noticed before 🔍. What I admire most about Enright is how she's not afraid to be herself – flaws and all 😊. It's like she's saying, "Hey, I'm human too, and I've got all these weird thoughts and feelings too." 🤪 Anyway, if you haven't checked out Attention yet, do yourself a favour and get reading ASAP 📚👍!

I'm not sure I'd rush out and buy this collection just yet... don't get me wrong, Anne Enright seems like a talented writer and all 🤔. But is it really worth the price tag? Like, what's the value in paying more for essays that are just gonna be, well, essays on life and literature? I mean, can't we just pick up some other book or article instead? And don't get me wrong, I love a good close reading as much as the next person 📚, but does this really require 24 essays and all those new introductions? It feels like it's more about the author promoting herself than actually offering something new.
