BBCSO/BBC Singers/Brabbins: UnEarth review – Wolfe faces the climate crisis head on

Wolfe's Climate Crisis Oratorio Falls Flat in UK Premiere

When tackling the issue of climate breakdown through art, striking a balance between conveying urgency and avoiding clichés is crucial. Julia Wolfe's oratorio "unEarth" ultimately tipped towards the latter during its UK premiere with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (BSO) under conductor Martyn Brabbins, although it still managed to elicit some striking impressions.

The production, spearheaded by Bang on a Can, drew from local youth choirs and featured an impressive ensemble of singers, including the men of the BBC Singers and National Youth Voices. The performance was notable for its visual spectacle, courtesy of Lucy Mackinnon's projections onto a circular screen behind the stage. When paired with the music, this created an evocative and immersive experience.

The opening movement began with the men singing lines from the Book of Genesis about the Flood, accompanied by violent rain and waves projected onto the screen. The use of cross-rhythms in "tree" sung in dozens of languages added to the sense of life and vitality, drawing the audience into the performance. However, as the piece progressed, it became increasingly difficult to shake off the feeling that Wolfe's message was being conveyed through heavy-handed means.

The final movement, which featured teenagers staring from the screen, felt like a case of putting onus on children to fix an older generation's mess. The thudding syllables of climate-science buzzwords sung by the men also came across as preachy, potentially alienating audiences rather than engaging them with the issue at hand.

In contrast, the first half of the concert, which included Copland's Appalachian Spring, offered a welcome respite from the weight of "unEarth". The score's simple yet effective clarinet and flute solos, coupled with its punchy rhythms, served as a poignant reminder of nature's resilience. This felt like an effortless paean to the natural world, one that could have been a more fitting precursor to Wolfe's climate crisis oratorio.

Ultimately, "unEarth" left this reviewer wondering whether it had successfully navigated the delicate balance between conveying urgency and avoiding clichés. While it was clear that Wolfe's message needed to be communicated, the execution often felt heavy-handed, rather than thought-provoking.

🤔 I mean, can we really just throw a bunch of youth choirs and fancy visuals at an issue as big as climate change and expect people to be moved? 🌎 It feels like "unEarth" is more about checking off a box on the 'artistic solution' list rather than actually sparking real conversation. And don't even get me started on that final movement - like, what's up with putting all the pressure on kids to fix it? 😩 We need more nuance and less heavy-handedness in our attempts to tackle this crisis.

I gotta say, I'm still reeling from that oratorio 🤯. The way they used projections on stage was straight fire 🔥! But at the same time, it felt like Wolfe was hitting me over the head with the climate crisis vibe 😴. Like, I get it, we need to act fast, but can't we just find a more subtle way to do it? 🤔 The Appalachian Spring interlude was the highlight of the concert for me - it's like nature itself is telling us to chill out and appreciate the beauty around us 🌿💚. Maybe next time Wolfe can dial it back a notch and trust her audience to pick up on the message without hitting them over the head with it 💪

🤔
okay so i just saw this news about julia wolfes climate crisis oratorio and honestly its kinda meh 🤷‍♀️ the music was pretty and all but like what's up with the whole preachy vibe on the thudding syllables of climate-science buzzwords 😴 it felt like they were trying too hard to tell us something instead of just showing us 📺

anyway 🤔 i liked the first half of the concert tho 🎵 coplans appalachian spring is a CLASSIC 🔥 simple yet effective and all that jazz 💯 but like when you move on to unearth it's like "okay cool now let's talk about climate change" 🌎

and omg those projections onto the screen 📸 were something else lol but like did they really need to use so many languages in "tree"? 🤷‍♀️ it felt like a lot of people were gonna be like "what does that even mean?" 🙄

I went to see Wolfe's climate crisis oratorio "unEarth" last week and honestly, I'm still trying to process my thoughts about it 🤯. On one hand, the visuals were stunning and the ensemble of singers was incredible 🎵👏. But at the same time, I felt like the message was getting lost in a sea of clichés 🌊. The opening movement was super powerful with all those people singing different languages about trees, but then it just felt like we're beating you over the head with climate change 💥. And don't even get me started on the teenagers staring at us from the screen - feel like they were put there to guilt trip us into saving the planet 😔. The good news is that Copland's Appalachian Spring was an amazing contrast and really showed us that nature can be beautiful and powerful 🌿💚

🤔 I mean, what's up with climate crisis oratorios? They're always so serious and heavy-handed 🤖. Can't they just vibe out some chill tunes about saving the planet instead of hitting us over the head with it 🌿? Wolfe's "unEarth" had some sick visuals tho 🎥, but honestly, I was kinda zoned out during that last movement... all those teenagers staring at the screen like they're the only ones who can fix climate change 🤦‍♂️. The Copland half of the concert was fire tho 💃, maybe she should've stuck to that vibe? 😔

I gotta say, I was really looking forward to "unEarth" but it kinda fell flat for me 🤔. I mean, I love Julia Wolfe's music and Bang on a Can's energy is always infectious, but sometimes less is more, you know? They went all out with the projections and the youth choirs and it was like, wow, that's impressive... but did we really need all those visuals to make a point about climate change? 🌎 I mean, can't the message just speak for itself? And don't get me wrong, I love Copland's Appalachian Spring - it's like music to my ears 😊. But that was like a breath of fresh air in an otherwise heavy-handed performance...

🤔 I'm a bit disappointed with Julia Wolfe's oratorio "unEarth" after its UK premiere... 🌎 The issue of climate breakdown is super important and needs to be tackled through art, but in this case, it felt like the message was being hit over the head rather than gently nudged. 😐 The production had some amazing visuals and a talented cast, but at times it came across as preachy and alienating. 🚫 What I would've loved to see is more nuance and subtlety in conveying the urgency of climate crisis without falling into clichés. 👀

idk how old school climate crisis vibes are still going strong 🙄... I mean, i remember when greta thunberg was just starting out and now she's like a superhero saving the planet lol 💚. anyway, julia wolfe's oratorio sounds like it had some cool ideas but maybe relied too much on being preachy 🤷‍♀️. the whole "putting burden on kids" thing felt kinda harsh tbh 😒... and omg i love copland's appalachian spring tho 🌳😍 that's like, the ultimate feel-good piece 💖

I'm defo feeling meh about Wolfe's climate crisis oratorio 🤔... like I get what she's tryin' to say, but sometimes I feel it's just preachy and heavy-handed 😐. I mean, can't we just vibe on the natural world instead of bangin' us over the head with climate change? 🌳💨 The visuals were fire tho 🔥... Lucy Mackinnon's projections brought an extra level of emotion to the performance 👏. But honestly, it felt like the audience was just bein' told what to think instead of bein' shown a more nuanced view 💭. Still, I'm all for explorin' these kinda issues through art 🎨... maybe next time she'll find that balance 😊

I gotta say, I left the UK premiere of Julia Wolfe's oratorio feeling kinda meh 🤔. The combination of impressive visuals and powerful performances just didn't quite come together for me 😐. It's like Wolfe wanted to tackle this massive issue of climate breakdown but ended up hitting a few too many sour notes 🎵. I get that she was trying to make some noise, but sometimes less is more, you know? 😊

I'm so underwhelmed by this oratorio 🤕. I mean, climate change is a super serious issue, but does we need another one of these "artistic" responses? It just feels like everyone's jumping on the bandwagon and trying to be all woke about it... 😒 The music was pretty alright, I guess, but it just didn't blow me away. And don't even get me started on the visuals - they were a bit too much for me 🎥. I think Julia Wolfe just phoned this one in. Can't she just stick to her string quartets? 😴

I gotta say, Julia Wolfe's oratorio "unEarth" fell short for me 🤔. The production had some major moments, like those stunning visuals and the energy of the local youth choirs, but it all got a bit preachy 🙄. I mean, who needs to be told about climate change? It's pretty obvious 🌎. They should've just let the music speak for itself instead of hitting us over the head with it 💥. And what's up with featuring teenagers on screen, like they're the ones fixing the planet 🤦‍♀️? I guess that's one way to get people engaged, but it felt forced 🙅‍♂️. Overall, I'd say "unEarth" was a bit of a miss 🎭 #ClimateCrisis #MusicToMyEars #NotImpressed

so i'm reading about julia wolfe's oratorio "unEarth" that just premiered in the uk 🤔 and honestly, it sounds like it had some solid parts but also fell flat for me. the projections on screen were a nice touch, added to the whole atmosphere of the performance. but then there were these moments where i felt like the message was being hammered home too much 🚧 i mean, using climate-science buzzwords and having kids stare up from the screen... it just didn't feel that impactful. and what's with the book of genesis opening movement? felt a bit on-the-nose for me 📖

I gotta say, I was kinda disappointed with Julia Wolfe's "unEarth" oratorio 🤔. The visuals were super cool, but the music itself didn't really hit me as hard as I expected it to. I get that tackling climate change is a big deal and all, but sometimes less is more, you know? It felt like they were trying too hard to make a point and ended up being kinda preachy 🙄. On the other hand, the first half of the concert was on point! Copland's "Appalachian Spring" is always a winner in my book 🎶. Maybe Wolfe just needs to work on her delivery and not be so heavy-handed with the climate messages 😊.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with the negative review 🤔, but at the same time, I do think they make some valid points 💡. The oratorio did feel like it relied on a bit too much on visual spectacle to drive home its message, and that's where Wolfe might've missed the mark slightly 🌎. On the other hand, I loved how it highlighted the importance of youth in addressing climate change - those teenagers staring back at us from the screen was really impactful 😊. Overall, it's a good effort, but maybe not perfect 💯?

omg u wont believe wat happnd at julia wolfe's climate crisis oratorio in uk premiere 🌎😐 the whole thing felt like she was hittin on us w/ climate change issues 🤦‍♀️ i mean dont get me wrong its an impotant topic but cant she just bring it up in a more subtle way instead of hammerin us w/ thudding syllables & clichés? 🎵 also the fact that teenagers were staring at the screen like "hey kids save the planet lol" was just cringeworthy 😂 anyw say, coplans appalachian spring is where it's at tho!!! 🌳👍

omg i gotta say i was super hyped 2 c julia wolfe's "unEarth" live 😱 but honestly i was kinda meh about it 🤔 the music was alright imo but i feel like its message got lost in all the drama 🌪️ lucy mackinnon's projections were totes amazin tho 👏 and copland's appalachian spring was a nice lil breather 😌 but overall i think wolfe could've done w/ out the whole "save the planet" vibe 🤦‍♀️ it felt like she was preachin' 2 us instead of takin' us on an emotional journey 🎧

I think the oratorio could've been way more effective if they didn't go for the whole 'clap on the hand' solution to climate crisis vibes. Like, I get it, we gotta take action, but do we really need to hammer home the point? Can't we just show some vulnerability and let the music speak for itself? 🤷‍♂️ The projections were pretty cool though, added a whole new level of depth to the performance. Maybe next time they'll tone down the 'save us' message and focus on the actual music 🎶

omg, i feel like climate change is a massive issue 🌎 but can't we just focus on the solutions instead of hitting us over the head with the problem? 🤯 julia wolfe's oratorio "unearth" was trying to convey this message through music and visuals, but it felt kinda heavy-handed 🙅‍♂️. i mean, the book of genesis thing at the beginning was cool and all, but then it just felt like we're shoving climate change in our faces every 5 seconds 💡. can't we just have a conversation about how to make things better? 🤝
