I'm so underwhelmed by Julia Wolfe's climate crisis oratorio "unEarth" The UK premiere with the BBC Symphony Orchestra just didn't quite hit the mark for me. I mean, the visuals were straight fire , but the music felt like it was preaching to the choir β literally! The use of cross-rhythms and all those languages in "tree" was cool, but it started to feel like a lazy way to convey a message instead of actually saying something new. And don't even get me started on that final movement... it felt like an attempt to guilt trip the audience into caring about climate change . But hey, at least the first half of the concert was solid β Copland's Appalachian Spring is always a winner . Maybe Wolfe just needs a little more time to perfect her message?
I'm really disappointed with Julia Wolfe's "unEarth" oratorio I mean, I love climate change awareness as much as the next person, but the way she tackled it in this piece just didn't sit well with me. The projections and all that were cool and all, but it felt like the message was being forced down our throats instead of being thought-provoking . I'd have loved to see more nuance and subtlety in the performance. On a positive note tho, their partnership with Bang on a Can and local youth choirs was fire
lol what a letdown wolfe thinks she can tackle climate crisis thru music but ends up being all preachy & heavy-handed like good luck with that tho, at least the visuals were fire lucy mackinnon's projections added this cool circular screen thing behind the stage that was straight fire anyway, gotta give it to wolfe for trying, but idk if she nailed it
