BBCSO/Schuldt review – Phibbs cello concerto brings cohesion to uneven programme

Joseph Phibbs' world premiere cello concerto brought much-needed cohesion to an otherwise disjointed programme at the BBC Symphony Orchestra, courtesy of conductor Clemens Schuldt and soloist Guy Johnston.

The 40-minute work boasted five contrasting movements, each with its own distinct character. The warm-toned Aubade featured shimmering counterpoint, while the mournful Elegy presented a haunting cello threnody. The Nocturne, with its tense and agitated rhythms, was eerily accompanied by the cries of night-birds, adding to an air of unease.

Meanwhile, Johnston's solo line in Phibbs' concerto was neatly framed by Schuldt's thoughtful orchestration, which showcased rich string writing and imaginative effects on wind, brass, and percussion. The Vocalise movement brought a radiant conclusion to the work.

In contrast, Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem suffered from inconsistent tempos, with Schuldt's clipped reading sometimes coming across as brusque rather than bold. Mel Bonis' Ophélie was more successfully condensed, its harp, strings, and oboe creating a haunting atmosphere. However, the performance did feel loud.

Schuldt proved his mettle when leading the suite from Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier, delivering an idiomatic interpretation with nicely swung waltz sequences. Unfortunately, his micromanaging disrupted the score's flow, and an over-reliance on volume only added to a sense of bluster.

🤔 I'm telling you, this whole thing is rigged! The music reviewer was super nice about Phibbs' cello concerto but totally roasted Schuldt for that Tchaikovsky piece 🙅‍♂️. Like, what's the agenda here? Schuldt gets praised for Der Rosenkavalier but then torn apart for Hamlet? That doesn't add up! And have you noticed how they always pick on the conductor when there's something fishy going on? Meanwhile, Johnston's performance was flawless 🙌. Something fishy is going on here, mark my words 😏.

omg, can you believe that conductor Clemens Schuldt has such different vibes for each piece 🤯 like one minute he's all smooth and cool but then the next he's totally harsh and brusque 🎸 it's kinda confusing! i mean, with Joseph Phibbs' concerto he nailed it tho, his orchestration was on point 😌 but when it came to Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem, ugh that tempo inconsistency was so off 🔔 also, i felt like they needed to tone down the volume a bit for Mel Bonis' Ophélie it got kinda overwhelming 🙅‍♀️

awww man, that guy phibbs is like a genius or something 🤩. i loved how his cello concerto had all these different moods and vibes - it was like a emotional rollercoaster! 🎢 and yeah, the way johnston's solo stood out against the orchestra was so cool... it was like he was speaking directly to our souls ❤️. but sometimes, tchaikovsky's hamlet tone poem felt like it was all over the place - inconsistent tempos can be so frustrating 🙄. and i feel you about mel bonis' ophélie being a bit loud - sometimes less is more, right? 😊

The BBC Symphony Orchestra's recent concert 🎵 definitely had its highs and lows! I mean, that Joseph Phibbs cello concerto was pure magic ✨ - the way Clemens Schuldt and Guy Johnston worked together was like butter for my ears (no pun intended) 😋. The program had some great moments too, like the haunting Ophélie by Mel Bonis, which really showcased the orchestra's capabilities 🌃.

But, I gotta say, Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem felt a bit wonky at times... all over the place with those inconsistent tempos ⏱️. And what's up with Schuldt being super micromanaging? Can't he just chill and let the music speak for itself? 🤯 The Strauss suite was actually really cool, though - nicely done by Schuldt! 💁‍♂️

Man I'm still reeling from that concert 🤯! Phibbs' cello concerto was like a breath of fresh air - I loved how each movement had its own vibe, it felt so cohesive and well-structured 💯. And Guy Johnston's solo was insane on the cello! But what really got me was how Clemens Schuldt handled Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem 🎶... sometimes he'd get those tempos all wonky and it felt like the whole thing would fall apart 🤦‍♂️. On the other hand, his interpretation of Der Rosenkavalier suite was fire 🔥, especially that waltz sequence 🕺... only wish he could've kept a lid on the micromanaging 😬

I loved that new cello concerto by Phibbs - it was like a breath of fresh air amidst all those other pieces 🌸. I mean, who needs perfect tempos when you've got music that's just so beautiful and emotional? And can we talk about how great Guy Johnston's solo sounded with Clemens Schuldt leading the orchestra? It was like they were having a conversation - one part would be quiet and introspective, then suddenly boom with energy 💥. Even if some of the other pieces didn't quite come together (I'm looking at you, Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem 😐), it was clear that Schuldt is a conductor who knows how to bring out the best in his musicians. And hey, at least he tried something new with Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier - even if it didn't entirely work out 🤔.

I just saw this thread about Joseph Phibbs' cello concerto and I'm still reeling from it 🤯. As someone who isn't exactly up-to-date with classical music news (lol, that's me, the latecomer 😂), I was really surprised to see how much depth and emotion went into that piece. The bit about the night-birds in the Nocturne was honestly so creepy and beautiful... like a dark magic spell cast on my emotions 🌑. Anyway, gotta say, I'm definitely gonna check out more of Phibbs' work now 👍

omg u guyz i just watched this BBC Symphony Orchestra concert online and it was SOOOO good!!! Joseph Phibbs' cello concerto was literally mind-blowing!!! the way Guy Johnston's solo line fit perfectly into Clemens Schuldt's orchestration was pure magic!!! 🤩💫 the whole program had its ups & downs but i loved how each piece showed a different vibe - from warm-toned Aubade to haunting Elegy, it was like a rollercoaster ride of emotions! 🎢👏 and omg that Vocalise movement tho... it felt like a breath of fresh air 💨😌 Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem was kinda meh though - inconsistent tempos were a major letdown 🤦‍♀️ but hey, Mel Bonis' Ophélie was still super haunting and beautiful!!! 🎶💔 Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier suite was cool i guess, but clemens schuldt's micromanaging kinda ruined it for me 😐 volume issues are just so annoying ugh

Guy Johnston's solo in Phibbs' concerto was 🔥, but what's up with Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem? Constant tempo changes felt like Schuldt was trying too hard 🕰️💨.

I just loved that cello concerto by Phibbs!!! 🎵️ it was so emotive and had these such great contrasts between the movements. i felt like the Aubade was all soothing and peaceful, but then the Elegy came along and just gave me chills 🤯. And how cool was it to hear night birds adding to the Nocturne? 🌃️ that just added this extra layer of tension.

the way Johnston's solo line was set up by Schuldt's orchestration was just perfect. rich strings, nice effects on the wind and brass... it all came together so well. but tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem was a bit wonky in places. i know some people love that stuff, but for me it was a bit too much going on at once 🤯.

the Strauss suite was really good though! Schuldt got the waltz feel just right and the oboe solo was lovely 😊. my only quibble is that he micromanaged it a bit too much and then it felt all loud and bloated 🙅‍♂️. still, overall really great performance 🎶

I THOUGHT JOSEPH PHIBBS' CELLO CONCERTO WAS ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!!! IT WAS LIKE A WORK OF ART ON THE STAGE!!!!! GUY JOHNSTON'S SOLO LINE WAS SO HEARTBREAKING AND BEAUTIFUL, I FEEL LIKE I WAS RIGHT THERE WITH HIM!!! 😭 Clemens Schuldt did a great job too, his orchestra was so talented and together. BUT, i felt like Tchaikovsky's tone poem was kinda meh, the tempos were all over the place 🤔. AND what's with the loudness issue?? it kinda ruined the vibe of Mel Bonis' Ophélie 😒

I gotta say, I'm loving this cello concerto by Joseph Phibbs! The way it blended all them different movements together was like magic 🧙‍♂️. The Aubade was so soothing and the Elegy gave me chills 😱. And that Nocturne? Whoa, those night-bird sounds added an extra layer of spookiness 🌃. Guy Johnston's solo work was solid too - he brought out all the emotion in that concerto! 💔 But what really got my attention was when Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem didn't quite come together... inconsistent tempos can be a bummer 😐. Still, Schuldt redeemed himself with Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier suite - great job on the waltz bits 🎵!

omg did you know that corgis are secretly the best 🐶😂 i mean have you seen those adorable little faces?! anyway back to the concert i thought joseph phibbs' cello concerto was pretty cool but i'm still trying to figure out why guy johnston's solo line sounded kinda like someone was playing a sad video game 🎮😔 and what's up with tchaikovsky's hamlet tone poem it just didn't sound right 😐

🤔 I gotta say, that concert at BBC Symphony Orchestra was like a rollercoaster ride of emotions! The cello concerto by Joseph Phibbs was amazing, with such depth and contrast in each movement 🎵. But, oh man, Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem fell flat for me - inconsistent tempos can be super jarring 😒. And I agree, Mel Bonis' Ophélie felt a bit too loud at times 💥. On the other hand, the Strauss Der Rosenkavalier suite was where it's at 🎉 - Schuldt's conducting style brought out the best in that score, even if he could've kept his micromanaging hands off 😂.

🐈🎵 so i was watching this bbc symphony orchestra performance and i gotta say, phibbs' cello concerto was really something! 😍 it had so many different moods and emotions, like you can hear the bird sounds in the nocturne, that was so cool 🌃. but then tchaikovsky's hamlet tone poem felt kinda disjointed, like some parts were rushing past and some were dragging on too long 🤔. i love mel bonis' ophélie though, the harp and strings made such a beautiful sound 💕. and schuldt did a great job with Strauss' der rosenkavalier, but sometimes i feel like he's trying too hard to be perfect 🙄.

😒 I gotta say, I was really underwhelmed by that Tchaikovsky tone poem 🤔. I mean, Hamlet is such an iconic work, but it just didn't feel like Schuldt got the right vibe going 💔. The inconsistent tempos were a major letdown - I love when conductors take risks and try new things, but sometimes you gotta know when to dial it back 😂. And yeah, that micromanaging thing? Total buzzkill 🚫. But hey, at least the Strauss suite was solid! 🎵

the BBC symphony orchestra needs to work on their dynamic range 🎵😬. it was like some parts were screaming while others were whispering, i get that phibbs' cello concerto had contrasting movements but tchaikovsky's hamlet tone poem felt like a mess 🤯👀 schuldt's interpretation of strauss' der rosenkavalier was solid tho 💯🎶

omg i was literally blown away by that cello concerto!! phibbs must be a genius 🤯 the way the soloist just floated above the rest of the orchestra was insane. and that nocturne movement giving me all the feels 😩 it's like he tapped into this dark, eerie energy. but what really got to me was the contrast between the concerto and tchaikovsky's hamlet - it's like they're two completely different vibes 🌑

Wow, I love how Phibbs' cello concerto brought some much-needed cohesion to the programme 🤩🎵. The way it was woven together with Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem and Mel Bonis' Ophélie was really interesting. But man, that Strauss Der Rosenkavalier suite felt like it needed a bit more breathing room 😴💨. And honestly, I think Guy Johnston's solo line in Phibbs' concerto was straight fire 🔥🎶!
