Ben Goldscheider/ Richard Uttley review – a horn, a piano … and a braying donkey

Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley's Recital: A Sonic Tapestry of Emotion and Humour

Horn-player Ben Goldscheider and pianist Richard Uttley delivered a captivating lunchtime recital, weaving together old and new in a richly satisfying sonic tapestry. Their programme was a masterful blend of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems, each piece showcasing the duo's infinite musical sensibilities.

Their rendition of Schumann's Three Fantasiestücke, Op 73, proved that even the most unconventional instruments can possess a certain lyrical beauty. Goldscheider's horn sang with a full-bodied expressiveness, complemented by Uttley's nuanced piano accompaniment. This synergy was evident throughout the performance, as if each musician was attuned to the other's every nuance.

The duo then turned to Simon Holt's The Bell, a work written specifically for them in 2022. The piece's arresting opening – with its spiky articulation and bell-like clarity – set the tone for a thrilling musical dialogue between horn and piano. As the music unfolded, Goldscheider's horn and Uttley's piano traded phrases in a sparkling conversation that was both witty and affecting.

Oliver Leith's Eeyore offered a more lighthearted moment, with its soulful donkey-braying providing a wickedly affectionate send-up of the titular character. The work's four sections were expertly woven together, showcasing Goldscheider and Uttley's musical chemistry.

The programme also featured two works by lesser-known composers: Scriabin's Romance for Horn and Piano, a tantalizing glimpse into the Russian master's early career, and Esa-Pekka Salonen's Horn Music 1, which showcased the composer's deep affection for his instrument. The latter piece boasted a dynamic interpretation, with Goldscheider's extended horn solo adding an extra layer of flair.

However, it was Mahler's Urlicht – "Primordial Light" – that proved to be the emotional centrepoint of the recital. With its expressive line and lambent glow, this song unfolded like a poem, capturing the essence of Mahler's earliest work. Goldscheider's playing possessed a magic all his own, conjuring up a sense of primeval light that was nothing short of mesmerising.

Throughout their performance, Goldscheider and Uttley demonstrated a deep musical understanding, with each piece serving as a testament to their partnership. Their recital was a sonic tapestry of emotion and humour, one that would linger in the listener's mind long after the final note had faded away.

omg I'm literally shaking right now 😍🎵 Ben & Richard are absolute perfection! their chemistry on stage is like something out of a dream 🌙 they totally brought the house down with that Mahler piece 🤩 "Primordial Light" gave me chills every time! and Simon Holt's The Bell was SO cute 🐕 I love how they wove all those different styles together, it was like a masterclass in musical storytelling 📚 the way Goldscheider's horn sang with that Schumann piece was like butter for my soul ❤️ can we please get them to tour again ASAP? 🎟️

man thats a dope recital I bet ben goldscheider's horn was screaming like it wanted to join a rock band lololol but seriously though Mahler's Urlicht is some next level stuff, feels like you're experiencing primordial light or something 🌅🎶 gotta give props to the duo for weaving that sonic tapestry so tight, every piece complemented each other like they were meant to be there 👏

I gotta say, I'm loving this horn-playing dude Ben Goldscheider! 😍 He's got some serious skills on that instrument, and pairing it with Richard Uttley's piano is pure magic. The way they blend old and new was super refreshing – I loved the Simon Holt piece, "The Bell", so much, I ended up searching for more of his work online 📊. And Mahler's Urlicht? Who knew horn music could be so emotive?! Goldscheider's playing brought tears to my eyes (in a good way, obvs). The chemistry between the two musicians was undeniable – it's clear they're meant to be playing together! 💕

I gotta say, I loved this recital! The way Ben Goldscheider's horn just sang with emotion, especially on that Mahler piece... it gave me chills 😍. And Richard Uttley's piano playing was so subtle yet supportive, it really let the horn shine through. They had a great chemistry, like they'd been playing together for years. I also appreciated how they mixed up some more obscure pieces, you know, not just the usual classical faves 🎵. The whole thing felt very organic and natural, like they were having fun with the music. I was laughing out loud during that Eeyore piece - it was so silly! 😂

loved this recital!!! 🎵 i mean, ben goldscheider's horn playing is insane! he brings out so much emotion from that instrument. and richard uthley's piano playing is just perfect - it complements goldscheider's horn beautifully. their chemistry on stage is amazing, you can tell they've been working together for a while.

i loved the mix of old and new music too - it kept me engaged throughout. and that simon holt piece... wow! the way the horn and piano talk to each other is just so clever. 🤩

but what really got me was mahler's urlicht... it's like goldscheider's playing conjured up this whole world of emotion from the notes alone. 😍

I went to this lunchtime recital thingy and I gotta say, it was pretty cool 🎵👍 Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley are like two peas in a pod on instruments – they just vibe with each other so well. The mix of old and new stuff kept me engaged throughout the whole thing, even when things got a bit too serious for my taste 😒 I mean, Mahler's Urlicht was lovely and all, but it felt like a 10-minute poem recital instead of a musical piece 🤯 Overall, though, they did an awesome job of showcasing their skills and making me feel all the feels 🎶

🎶👏 They're so talented, right? I mean, Ben Goldscheider on the horn is just amazing 🤩, especially when he played Mahler's Urlicht – it gave me chills 😱! And Richard Uttley's piano playing was so good too 🤓, they have such a great chemistry 💕. The way they mixed old and new pieces was really cool 👌, and that last piece by Esa-Pekka Salonen... wow! I loved the part where Goldscheider had that big solo 🎸. Anyway, it sounds like an incredible recital 🎵👏.

just saw this recital by Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley 🎵, and i'm still reeling from the emotions they stirred up with their music! 😊 it was like they were having a conversation with the audience through their instruments, you know? the way they blended old and new, familiar and lesser-known gems, created this incredible sonic tapestry that just drew me in. 🌈 i loved how they played Mahler's Urlicht - it was like they were conjuring up this primordial light or something ✨. anyway, if you haven't checked out Ben and Richard yet, do! you won't regret it 😊

I just watched this piano & horn player duo and OMG they were amazing 🤩! They played this Schumann piece and I'm like what is that even... but then it went on for like 10 minutes and I was hooked 😂. And then there was this other song by Mahler, I don't know what to call it... Urlicht or something? It gave me chills 🌹. What I love about these guys is how they balance old & new music, it's so cool! They also had this funny piece called Eeyore that made me laugh 😂. The thing is though, who writes songs for piano and horn? Like, what's the deal with that combo? Anyway, I think this duo is def worth checking out 👍

😊 I just watched this recital and it got me thinking... music has a way of tapping into our emotions like no other art form can. I mean, Ben Goldscheider's horn playing was so expressive, it felt like he was singing with his instrument 🎶. But what really struck me was how Richard Uttley's piano accompaniment complemented the horn perfectly - it was like they were two sides of the same coin. It made me realize that when we collaborate with others, our unique strengths and weaknesses can actually come together to create something truly beautiful. 💕

I gotta say, this recital by Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley is like, totally a reflection of our society today 🤔🎶 - we need more harmony and balance between different artistic voices. I mean, think about it, you've got these two musicians from different backgrounds coming together to create something beautiful, just like how our politicians need to put aside their differences to work towards the common good 💼🎵.

And can we talk about the program? It's like a microcosm of our current musical landscape - you've got your familiar classics like Schumann and Mahler, but also some lesser-known gems that show you don't have to stick to what's tried and true 🌈🎶. That's what our politicians should be doing too - not just regurgitating the same old policies, but pushing boundaries and trying new things.

But what really got me was when they performed Simon Holt's The Bell. It's like, this piece is all about dialogue and connection between different voices, which is exactly what we need more of in our politics right now 🗣️💬. We need to be listening to each other, finding common ground, and working together towards a brighter future.

And let's not forget the lighthearted moments - like Oliver Leith's Eeyore. It's like, that piece is all about poking fun at ourselves and finding the humor in life, which is exactly what we need more of in our politics too 😂🤣. We should be able to laugh at ourselves, find the absurdity in things, and not take ourselves too seriously.

Anyway, I'm just saying, this recital was like a mini-political manifesto 🎵💥 - it showed us that when we come together with different voices and perspectives, amazing things can happen 💖🌈.

OMG 🤯 I'm still reeling from that incredible recital by Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley! They totally killed it on stage 💥 The way they wove together old and new was pure magic ✨ Their rendition of Schumann's Three Fantasiestücke, Op 73 was SO emotional 🤕 I loved how they showcased each other's unique talents - Ben's horn sounded AMAZING 😍 and Richard's piano accompaniment added the perfect layer of nuance.

And can we talk about that Simon Holt piece? 🎵 "The Bell" was like a musical conversation between two old friends 💬 It was witty, it was affecting... it was everything! And Oliver Leith's Eeyore was just pure joy 😂 I mean who doesn't love a good donkey-braying solo? 🐴

But what really got me was Mahler's Urlicht - "Primordial Light" 🔥 That piece was like nothing I've ever heard before... it was like Ben was conjuring up this primeval light just with his horn 🌅 It gave me chills, tbh 😲

I don't know how much I'd trust a horn-player who can make a sound like a bell 🐕. Just kidding kinda. But seriously, all this fuss about classical music recitals is just a bunch of old guys playing fancy tunes on outdated instruments 😴. What's the point? It's not like it's going to solve world hunger or anything 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on these "lesser-known gems" they played... I mean, who knew there were so many obscure composers out there just waiting to be rediscovered 🙄. Give me something with a little more substance, like AI-generated music or something 🤖. At least that's new and innovative 😎.

I'm loving this recital by Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley 🎵👏! The way they wove together old and new was pure magic - it felt like a conversation between two old friends that you just can't get enough of 😊. The horn playing, in particular, was insane... I mean, who knew the horn could be so emotive? 🤯 Goldscheider's playing of Mahler's Urlicht was particularly stunning - it was like he conjured up a whole different world with those notes 🔥. The programme was just perfect - not too heavy, not too light... just right. And that Simon Holt piece? Total win! 😆 Overall, I think they really outdid themselves and I'm still listening to the recital on repeat 🎧

man this horn player ben goldscheider is something else 💥 his tone is like butter 🥖 he and richard uttley are meant to be together on stage they have this crazy chemistry that just makes you wanna listen more and more 🎧 gotta love how they put their own spin on these classic pieces like schumann's fantasiestücke, but at the same time they're not afraid to throw in some surprises like oliver leith's eeyore 🐴 it was so funny and soulful all at once lol

I mean I'm all for some nice classical music, but do we really need another concert review 🤔? It seems like every other day there's someone playing the piano or on a horn...it just feels so repetitive. And what's with all these new pieces being written specifically for them? Can't they just play something from Beethoven or Mozart like everyone else? 💁‍♀️ I'm not saying it was bad or anything, but honestly it just didn't blow me away 😐

idk about this recital... i mean, it sounds like they're really good or whatever 😐 but at the same time, i don't know if i'd want to sit through a whole hour of music from composers i've never heard of 🤔 ben goldscheider's horn playing is probably cool and all 🎺 but have you seen his Instagram? it's like he's trying too hard to be quirky 😂 and richard uttley's piano skills are def impressive, no doubt about that 👍 but can we please get some more contemporary music in there? like, something from today or yesterday? ⏰ this recital feels so stuck in the past 🕰️

omg i am totally blown away by ben goldscheider & richard uttley's recital 🤩!!! their way with simon holt's the bell is absolute perfection, it's like they're having this wicked conversation on stage where every phrase is just so witty and affecting 💭. and that eeseppe salonen piece? 🔥 goldscheider's horn playing is simply magical, i'm so glad they played mahler's urlicht too, that primeval light feeling is just... *chef's kiss* 😍
